Ideas for dinner w/a large party at the last minute [San Francisco]

Cool, thank you both!

The purpose is just to have a nice meal. I have been trying to get something organized for weeks, but I finally gave up. My family is from Singapore, where you can bring a gang of people into any hawker center whenever you want and eat pretty well. So they don't want to plan, but also have no patience for waiting.

So I appreciate your advice! It'll be good to have some ideas ready, although it's also possible that they'll want to wander around and just stop in the first restaurant that looks like it can accommodate us.

Ideas for dinner w/a large party at the last minute [San Francisco]

I have a bunch of family coming to SF to visit next weekend, and no one is being helpful at all with respect to planning our time. I am fairly certain that everyone will want to go out together for meals, but won't figure out when until the last minute. I am also certain that they will then turn to me and expect me to suggest good restaurants that can take a party of TEN without a super long (hour +) wait.

Any ideas? They usually prefer Asian food, but I will be happy with anything that tastes delicious. Ideal suggestions would be for places that are less expensive and less crowded (but still good). <$40 w/o alcohol would be great, but could go higher for something special.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Beatrice and Woodsley vs Squeaky Bean [Denver]

Yay, thank you! It turns out that my friends decided on Squeaky Bean anyway, so I'm glad to hear it was probably the right choice.

Beatrice and Woodsley vs Squeaky Bean [Denver]

Trying to decide between the two. Thoughts? I've seen quite a bit about Squeaky Bean, but nothing about B&W on here.

bizarrely rigid seating policy at homeroom?

The issue wasn't the booth, it was that the OP's party was not complete. And the links explains why they do not sit incomplete parties.

Two nailed down need advice on the third choice

And I would say AQ over Sons and Daughters, but it might be an easy decision if you have a preference between a set menu (S&D) and an a la carte menu (AQ-although AQ has a tasting menu option too).

Also, I'm pretty sure S&D is just wine, and AQ has great cocktails. So that might also help you make your decision.

Michael Bauer's efforts to remain anonymous

I don't think it's unfair to expect that a critic who does not make any attempt to remain anonymous, will not have the statement "reviewers make every attempt to remain anonymous" included with every single review. It is misleading to readers who are not aware that he is very well known in the local restaurant industry and who might believe that they can reasonably expect to receive the same treatment from a reviewed restaurant that he does.

(And I think that's really the only point people are trying to make.)

I really like Philz decaf beans. There are a few locations in the South Bay, I believe. I just went in one day and asked for a 1/4 pound of every type of decaf they offer, in order to decide which one I prefer (the House Blend).

That link also addresses why they don't make exceptions to the rules during slow periods.

The short-sightedness/foolishness of some cookbook authors

In many cases, I think this is more about the author recognizing that some people just need to see low/reduced fat in order to be interested in a recipe. While many people who aren't afraid of fat will just think "well, I'll just use regular sour cream."

I know quite a few people who will make anything they see labeled as low-fat, and they usually seem more interested in how it's low-fat than how it tastes. "I made this dessert with fat-free cool whip, fat-free egg beaters, and splenda!! It only has 1 gram of fat per serving!!"

Need Denver Resto that has Good food but not formal.

Since no one else has responded, I have a few suggestions that have great food and are informal, but I can't speak to the wine selection (you can check them out online, I'm sure). I visited recently from San Francisco, and all three of these restaurants stood out for me.

good takeout, informal dine in? travelling with 4 year old and 8 month old

La Ciccia (Sardinian Italian) does takeout and is about 6 blocks from where you'll be.
Angkor Borei (Cambodian) and Spicy Bite (Indian) both deliver.
Inka's (Peruvian) seems like it'd be fine for kids, and also does takeout. There's been a change of owner recently, however, and I haven't heard if the quality has been affected.

9 Overrated Bay Area Restaurants - Wow....

A lot of people complained about the service, which I've always thought was great.

It may just be poor timing since Cosentino just won Top Chef Masters and the restaurant is getting a lot of attention.

Goat Meat at a sit-down restaurant in SF proper?

Zare at Fly Trap does sometimes. If you have a larger party and are planning in advance, you can probably call ahead to arrange it.

Denver - Buy Foie Gras

Try The Pig & Block. They had some lobes a few weeks ago for sure. If they don't have some available when you call, they will usually get a new shipment in a week or two. They are also super nice and helpful.

SF Dish of the Month (Sep 2012) - Cucumber Pickles

Love those pickles! They use an herb or something that I recognize, but can't ever put my finger on.

Revisiting Garçon [San Francisco]

Well that's interesting about the new pastry chef. The last time we were there (a month or two ago), we ordered two desserts. Everything was delicious, but we didn't quite get the combination of items. Can't remember the details, but it was like the creme brulee dessert description: items that didn't seem to go together and some that didn't seem necessary.

We decided to just think of each dessert as two smaller desserts, rather than trying to combine the different items on each plate into a unified dessert. We left happy, but wondered what was going on in the kitchen.

Park Tavern--The good, the bad, and the ugly

Totally agree with Omniverous here (about having had the opposite experience as the OP). I've only had great experiences at Park Tavern and would probably get there more often if it weren't in North Beach, which I tend to avoid because of the tourists and because it feels a bit out of the way for me.

There may be things on the menu that appear frequently on other menus in the city, but I like Park Tavern's versions and find the menu appealing overall, if not particularly mind-blowing or inventive.

Sorry that you had such a bad experience, tessari!

Savoury dishes using greek-style/natural yoghurt

I mix greek yogurt with sriracha to make a sauce that I put on sandwiches and to use as a dipping sauce. I also use it as a topping for soups (e.g. chicken tortilla, black bean, vegetable), in place of sour cream.

I second this. When I lived in Denver, my company would always take clients to Panzano because it works for everyone.

good food near Convention Center [Denver]

I went to Le Grande Bistro at 15th and Curtis for lunch a few days ago and had a really great time. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I plan on making it one of my regular stops whenever I'm in town.

"not dumbed down, but definitely tarted up beyond what it needs to be..."

YES, that description is perfect. That's exactly what my problem is with Dosa.

I love it, one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I always have a great time, feel very taken care of and, most importantly, the food is always really delicious.

Moving to Sacramento

Fat's is NOT dim sum. They offer a few items you may see at a dim sum restaurant (e.g. shu mai, pot stickers) but anyone hoping to get dim sum at those restaurants is going to be bitterly disappointed.

Kouing Aman?

Coming down to Fullerton in a few weeks from the Bay Area, does anyone know a bakery near Fullerton (30 minutes or less away is fine) that has them? Sorry if someone has already mentioned a place that fits the bill, always get a bit confused with my SoCal geography.

Sacramento and Surroundings

Yum, Hawks is my favorite (in the Sac area). I've been wanting to do the tasting menu for a while now, so it was nice to hear about it. Glad you guys had a great time.

Also, not sure what the deal is about Jimboy's but I think the one at Denio's was supposed to be better than the others. I've only been to a few of the other ones and I would describe them as not terrible but definitely not worth a visit for someone from out of town.
