Eating *on the way* to Atlantic City from NNJ?

On Rt 37 in Toms River, JUST east of the Parkway, there's a restaurant called "The Office."

Not part of the Office chain. Good, reliable food, sometimes exceptional. Very good beer selection, including some craft beers on tap.

Typically an older crowd, but lots of seating at the bar and in two dining rooms.

Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Near New Providence, NJ

I'm partial to the Trap Rock Brewery. Good food, great beer (and full bar), but not cheap. Check them out, in Berkeley Heights.

They have a private dining room upstairs that looks wonderful. Don't know what the capacity is, though.

Buying a Steak in NJ (butcher shops)

My first experience with Arctic Meat in PPB was not overwhelming: they were featuring marinated meats and products "ready to throw on the grill." Not a bad thing, just not my thing.

This summer, I tried them again, and they're my go-to butcher at the Shore.

Dry aged beef, grass fed beef, baby backs (not pre-seasoned), pork butt... a great season of grilling and smoking (meats), and they take a personal interest in what you're doing and how it turned out.

Fine example: Bought their grass fed ground beef, seasoned with black pepper and herb salt, grilled to medium -- so juicy and tasty my guests asked what I "did" to the burgers to make the best they'd ever had. These are 50 year old carnivores, mind you.

That said, I also love the Black Angus franks from the Colonial Market in Point Boro. Worth a special trip from the Beach.

Irish pubs in Monmouth County?

Hi,

I was going to ask for folks' thoughts comparing St Stephen's Green and Harrigan's ... but over the weekend realized how many Irish bars/taverns/pubs there are in the area, and thought I'd solicit impressions on the good, the bad, and the empty chairs ....

I like Irish food, and the Irish Breakfast at St Stephen's was pretty good. Also like a good pour of stout ... but a good beer selection beyond that, as well.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

oo

Shore Fresh Seafood ~ Point Pleasant

I didn't realize the Coop location (PPB) and Bridge Ave (Boro) were related. Used to frequent the Coop before they changed to more of a restaurant. Never went to the Boro shop, as it's a bit off-putting to have a seafood restaurant next to a bait store!!

Worth a try, though.

Nice to read that the Coop is still functioning.

Good Burger Milkshake Place Suggestion

Try the burger at Joe's Mill Hill Tavern in Trenton. I wouldn't go there at night, but I've had good burgers there at lunch time. Not sure if they make milkshakes.

Captain Paul's Firehouse Dogs, Lawrenceville

Thanks for the post. They're a short drive from my client's offices, and I stopped in for lunch today. A little surprised to see only 4 seats at the counter, but the outdoor dining facilities were pretty good.

Had a 2 alarm (chili & cheese dog) and a Seal Team 6 (mustard and NY style onions).

A little bland, but I'd go back.

New Jersey Monthly Poll

Closest is probably Artisan's in Toms River, which used to be another Basil T's. Totally different food & beer. Carton & Kane are the local breweries, but it looks like you know that. Next closest is probably Chicago UNO in Edison/Woodbridge on Rt 1 So.

Hard to see how Basil T's and Artisan's rank on beer selection ... good beers, and arguably deserving in the brewpub category, but really?

Coach's Bar and resto.....Ocean

After reading the comments, I looked at the Otto's website, and yes, it's Otto's new bar:

"Its official! We have purchased another business in Ocean Township, formerly named Jay Michaels. It will be a restaurant & bar and the new name is "Coach's Restaurant & Bar". We will be open anywhere from one month to three months depending on the liquor license transfer. Thank you to everyone for all your support and we look forward to seeing you soon at our second location."

Mossuto's Market, Wall NJ

Went there for the first time, yesterday, after reading the posts, here. The cafe and bar looked interesting, but I was there for the dried beef. It was outstanding, but at $19.99/lb., not cheap, either!

How's the meat at Arctic Market and Butcher in Point Pleasant?

I think they were "Polaski" but I will check next time I'm there. They were similar to Thumanns, not quite the same spice mix, though.

How's the meat at Arctic Market and Butcher in Point Pleasant?

Arctic Meat was a classic old school butcher shop some years ago in the same spot. It's changed hands a few times, but as a previous poster has noted, it's now run by a relatively young, local guy, who grew up with, and wants to emulate the old shop.

I've been happy with what I've bought there, but they really like to sell prepared meats - kebobs & marinated, etc., and I like to do that myself, so I'm not their primary audience.

That said, they say they have grass fed beef, and they have a good line of gourmet sausages that I've got in the freezer, dying to try.

Stopped in for ground beef on the fly the other night, and it was good quality & fresh.

I'm told they also picked up the kielbasa & polish meats that the shop a couple of doors down stopped selling. The kielbasa was top notch (had it from Arctic the other night) and they carry some polish hot dogs, too.

Where can I buy quality coffee beans near Marlboro?

Then you'll probably appreciate this place. I drove by it on my way down 71 last week, and had to turn around and check it out. If I'm remembering correctly, it's right across the street from an old favorite of mine (a couple of owners & locations ago), Mr. Shrimp.

Turnstile is a nice place. Roaster out in the open, and selected bags of beans by the counter.

By the way, I've also shopped at the Platypus, at the Shrewsbury location and in Princeton. Great that they have a selection of beans, but I'm never confident about how long they've been sitting in the store, and at the Princeton location, the coffee is decidedly an afterthought to the furniture and home decorating stuff!

I love their cool, funky selection of stuff, just not my preferred coffee option.

Where can I buy quality coffee beans near Marlboro?

... oops! "some they bring in ..."

And I got two selections:

A Nicaraguan Segovia and a Rwandan Tumba Cocatu.

I explained that I've been enjoying Sumatran coffee lately, looking for something similar, so they recommended one of these -- I don't remember which they recommended, frankly, but I think the Nicaraguan. It's a bit more strong/robust than the Rwandan from the two batches I've brewed.

The kid behind the counter wasn't so well informed about the coffees, but he was friendly, and happy to get the advice from a woman who seemed to know what she was talking about (owner? manager?).

For what it's worth, I'm grinding in a spice grinder & brewing in a French press. Having good results, although I miss my burr grinder that recently passed into the non-functional!

Learning not to buy too much at once, so I'm happy to find someplace local that I can get to conveniently.

I like the Green Planet latte, but they only offer one variety of bean by the pound, and it's not to my taste. They're another option for you, with a few locations including Point Pleasant and Manasquan.

Northern New Jersey Fresh Roasted Coffee Beans

I'll second Bluestone. I love Beans, buy there all the time, but parking is a challenge (mostly, I walk there) ... I understand that Bluestone roasts their own, and I got a half pound of Sumatra there a couple of weeks ago that was very good.

For another option, I'm enjoying the coffee I bought at Turnstile in Belmar. Good variety, some the bring in, some they roast in house. Nice place, right on Rt. 71.

Where to watch soccer (Premier League football) on Sunday?

Thanks to all for the suggestions -- turns out I watched at home with my wife, it being Mother's Day, and all ...

Quite a dramatic finish as QPR improbably held a 2-1 lead at the end of regulation time, and MCity scored twice in stoppage for the win and the championship.

The whole game was the game to watch, between the red card and the two QPR goals ...

Kawatan, I have to agree with you on the beer selection at R&Hum. Stopped in there about a month ago for a pre-dinner beer, and was mesmerized by the beer board!
