My Reccomended places in Columbia-Laurel area
based on my favorite foods.
For Korean food i'd strongly reccomend Woomi in Wheaton. They cook the Kalbi(beef short ribs, i like to think of it as the korean version of steak) on the table for you. Its expensive about $20 a order but worth it if you love good Korean food. They also serve Sushi and some good soups, however we go there for the Kalbi. Oh and if you haven't eaten Korean before you generally get alot of 'sides' to try with the main course. We've been to many Korean restaurants and this one currently is the best all around.
If you like Ja Ja Mieun, chinese-korean noodle dish, i'd reccomend The Silver Dragon in Ellicott City. They are pricy as well, but if you've never had korean-chinese style cuisine i'd reccomend trying some dishes like Sweet and Sour Pork or Gong Pong Ji. There is also a large Asian Market Grocery with an eatery called Lotte in Ellicott City.
My family generally goes to Hunan Manor in Columbia for Chinese. I've had Pei Wei, PF Changs, and AseanBistro. The biggest problem i have with the latter are the portions in relation to price. Hunan Manor is very generous and reasonably priced in comparison to the others. They all make top notch chinese food and i'd say the busiest in Columbia out of all of the Chinese Restaurants.
One of my favorite foods are Buffalo Wings. I've tried as many places as you can think of, and continue to try places in the area, even up to 30 minutes away. Sadly the best wings i've had are from Wings to Go. Considering i've had wings from CluckU, Hooters, Sullivans Steak and Grill, Buffalo Wings and Beer, Chilli's, Bennigans, Clydes, Rocky Run, TGIFridays, Hard Times Cafe, Sorrento's, Columbia Ale House, and many other places its disappointing. My only complaint about Wings to Go is they are a little small compared to many of the other places i mentioned. Hard Times Cafe were very good since they would grille them after frying, too bad all of the locations i knew went out of business. You can get these style wings from Wild Buffalo Grille now in Laurel, which i think some people from Hard Times Cafe started because the wings are the same all around as Hard Times. I also got a receipt that had Hard Times Cafe imprinted on it when i first got wings from Wild Buffalo Grille. I like Sorrento's wings as well and they always cook them crisp, a big complaint i have of the many other places i mentioned. They are also big, but kind of expensive for whats supposed to be a cheap sub joint.
There is no comparison when it comes to sandwiches. If you have never had the Cheesecake Factory's sandwiches your missing out. I particularly love the Grilled Shrimp and Bacon, however the Navajo, and another sandwich i cant recall the name of were delicious also. I was completely blown away by their sandwiches and had no idea how great this places food was. Its a very regal place. Only complaint are the Mcdonalds style fries. Rocky Run in Columbia has an impressive menu of sandwiches, and also very good all around.
Speaking of fries i still havent had better than Boardwalk fries which is in every mall. I even prefer Boardwalk fries over Thrasher in Ocean City, they are more crispy. Very close between the two though.
In terms of Burrito's, i've had Qdoba, Don Pablos, Frisco Burrito, and Baja Fresh. Its very difficult to pick one, I kind of like Frisco Burrito's when they put in fresh green peppers and onions the best. Qdoba has cheap decent Quesidilla's.
As for Crab Cakes, i'd reccomend Timbukto for best bang for the buck. About $13 will get you a big over filled sub of lump crabmeat, very generous portions. For taste i'd reccomend M & G but very expensive. Just a sandwich, less than half the size of a Timbukto sub portion costs about $13 here. I would say though the crabcake is better tasting and cooked perfectly while they sometimes overcook at Timbukto.
For Pizza i'd reccomend Vennari's in Columbia. Very good and known in the area.
For Fried Chicken i'd reccomend Chicken and Friends in Columbia. JR's in Jessup is also pretty good fried chicken.
Thats all i can think of for now, but if you have any reccomendations for me in the categories i mentioned i'd love to hear a good place to try!
