Real, Traditional Club Sandwich in LA?
If you are in Eagle Rock, we always get the turkey club at Pete's Blue Chip. It's great and they put in a slice of american cheese along with grilled turkey deli slices. It's not fancy but we like it.
Yellow Goo for Hot Cross Buns
I just made some hot cross buns. I used a mixture of flour and butter which I rolled between my hands into ropes and then formed a cross on top of the buns. It baked into them. I thought it was better than the powdered sugar/milk mixture most people use. It was a sort of light yellow, dry color.
eagle rock sportsmen bbq
This past weekend was the Eagle Rock Sportsmen's seventh annual BBQ. It was the first one that I've attended and it deserves a mention.
I thought the wildest thing that they'd serve would be buffalo. Boy was I wrong. I had venison sausage, wild boar sausage, boar meatballs, smoked boar, I think it was boar chili, boar chops, venison chops, buffalo ribs, buffalo cheese burger, and for those with milder tastes, some BBQ'd chicken. It was all served with baked potatoes, steamed corn on the cob, coleslaw, rolls and butter. There was an appetizer of elk sausage for those who got there early. I did.
Next year at this time when you go by the Eagles Club on the corner of Yosemite and Townsend, look for the sign of the buffalo BBQ. It's an event that shouldn't be missed.
A cake that will get you drunk
DAVID LEBOWITZ'S website has an absinthe cake. Absinthe is in the cake and also drizzled over. It's also got crushed almonds, anise seeds and orange peel. It was delicious and a recipe that I will make again.
MALEFEMMINA (ITALIAN COOKIE)
The cookie was wavy with distinct ridges, like it had been piped. It was oval and about 2 inches high and two inches wide.
MALEFEMMINA (ITALIAN COOKIE)
I recently returned from Florence. At a chocolate festival near Santa Croce a woman was selling a cookie with the name Malefemmina. Does anyone know of a recipe for this cookie or its history? I bought one and it was light (made with egg whites) and sweet.
Christmas Tree Ice Cream?
Once in Seattle, I had a sabayon infused with douglas fir. Don't limit yourself to pine.
Chocolate and Sea Salt Recipes
drizzle bread slices with olive oil
cover with grated chocolate (at least 62%)
sprinkle with sea salt
bake in oven until crisp
I also second the World Peace Cookies. The sea salt in them gives a burst of flavor when you least expect it.
California Olive Oil in Los Angeles
FYI
the olive festival in Paso Robles is August 21. Everything is California olive oil. I've never tasted so many. It was lots of fun. The olive oil ice cream was one of the best things I've ever eaten.
In vegetable rut, need new ideas for what to do with them
I had some ground turkey that I had to use. I stuffed some red bell peppers and some green anaheim chili's with a sort of meat loaf mixture that I made with the ground turkey. The meat mixture is my sweet and hot recipe, made with onions, garlic, apricot jam, one chipotle pepper, salt and pepper, bread crumbs and eggs. Put vegetables into a dish and pour over some tomato sauce or I just diluted some tomato paste with water and added some garlic cloves. Bake for an hour. The sauce and the veggies were delicious. Other items to stuff are cabbage leaves, zucchini, eggplants, squash, tomatoes and even potatoes.
What five cookbooks would you keep?
MTAOFC - Julia Child
Julia Childs Baking Book
Paula Wolfert's Moroccan Cookbook
Diana Kennedy's Cuisines of Mexico
The Italian Baker by Carol Field
I like these not just for the recipes but they are great reads.
Lightweight Healthy and tasty Backpacker/Hostel Meals? Recipe ideas for next time???
my standard dinner is a packet of dry soup mix, I'm not talking about those ramen things, but something like Knorr or Maggi. Boil the liquid, chop up some veggies (I'd usually use a small head of cabbage or some chopped frozen veggies) drop in a sausage or two and cook unitl done. The hostel usually had a soup pot and a burner.
Palmiers
I love palmiers. Unfortunately my favorite ones are from San Diego at Bread and Cie. Buttery, the right texture and heft, they are perfect. Too bad I live in L.A. There is no cinnamon.
ISO Chewy Granola Bar Recipe
I made the ones from lilmomma, I put in flax meal, coconut and chocolate. it was easy , fast and delicious. It's now my go to granola bar.
Elderflowers in SoCal?
I make elderflower syrup. I pick mine all over Mount Washington. They are blooming everywhere right now.

Grand Central Market - Recs?!?!
My girlfriend and I always get the carnitas taco and the carne asada taco at Roast To GO.
We get the craving and that place has always satisfied. I think we've been going for over 10 years now.
Need advice for first-time trip (Santa Barbara, Cambria, Monterey, Yosemite, LAX)
In Montery, have breakfast at Rosine's on Alvarado. The best eggs benedict ever. I get the turkey, mushroom benedict (they have several varieties). All the locals go there.
ON THE WAY TO MONTEREY OR SF
I often find myself driving to Monterey (mother in law lives there). We always need a place to stop along the way for a cup of coffee and a snack. Paso Robles has several places but I just found a new place in a little town north of Paso. It's in San Miguel. Take the Mission Street off ramp from the 101 freeway. The mission is a nice place to take a few pictures or light a candle for someone who needs it. Then you come to a place called the Mission Deli. It's in a new building and it is also a small market with an array of snacks. They also have a hot food counter where you can get breakfast burritos, fried chicken and really great sandwiches that are made to order. The coffee is not the greatest but you can get a cold beer and sit at one of the tables out front and watch the traffic go by. I loved it.
A pizza place is opening up across the street.
I'd rather frequent a place in a small town like this instead of a chain like Starbucks or Subway.
New Year's Day - Pork and sauerkraut recipe, anyone?
Start with some minced bacon, fry it until the fat comes out. You can drain some of the fat off. Add a minced onion, a couple chopped apples, until they brown a bit. I will add some fresh chopped cabbage at this point until it wilts. Add the kraut, a smoked pork chop and/or some ham or pork loin, a few mild pork sausages, a little white wine, whole black pepper, a little anise seed. Let it simmer a while and then add some potatoes until they are cooked through. We have mustard with it when its done. That's what I'm making on new year's eve.
Where can I find Purslane?
Super King Market (on San Fernando Road) has it. Three bunches a dollar.
Where Do You Buy Your Pasta and What Do You Buy?
I am surprised that no one has mentioned the leftover factor. I don't like Barilla because when it is sauced and leftover for a day or two, it seems to fall apart. That doesn't happen with DeCecco. I don't overcook, I taste until its al dente.
What are you making right now?
last weekend I was at the olive oil festival in paso robles, ca. I had the best olive oil ice cream. It was drizzled with some delicious basalmico. I am now trying to recreate that ice cream. I am just using good evoo, heavy cream, and sugar.
Arbequina Olive Oil
There is a chain of stores called "WE OLIVE". There is one in Belmont Shore. They sell an early harvest arbequina by the ounce, it's really spicy and sharp. The one I've had at the Cheesestore in Silverlake was a late harvest and it was soooo smooth. Really one of the best oils I've ever had.
Favorite Sausages for a cookout
The German butcher at Alpine Village in Torrance. Too many different kinds to mention. That should be your first stop.
Figueroa Produce - New market in Highland Park
fyi: Super King on San Fernando (just off off of the 2 freeway) is even better than Fig. Produce. Lots more produce, extremely fresh, and even better prices. I buy berries, fresh pitas and it has an extremely interesting deli counter. It is always an adventure when I go there.
Risotto without stock
I use (to paraphrase Jacqes Pepin) Chateau Sink. Water is fine if you add other flavorings like porcini, cheese, aromatic herbs and vegetables.
My oven is broken-- what can I "bake" for a work luncheon?
I was visiting my mother once and her oven was broken. I made cakes and pies for her in a little electric toaster oven. You don't need a big oven.
last meal cooked
wild salmon fillets - sprinkled with chili powder (Chimayo), salt, pepper, and honey I cooked them in butter till crispy and charred on the outside but still a bit rare inside.
collard greens - started with a little good bacon dice, onions, celery and garlic and olive oil. I didn't cook them very long, just till they got a bit wilted. I added a little sugar because they were a little bitter. Delicious!
shredded broccoli, carrots, red cabbage - just olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper and at the end I added a spoonful of walnut oil. Really delicious!
