Just moved to Bay Ridge - looking for advice (restaurants, provisions, etc)

Just wanted to thank everyone for the recs so far - we have really been enjoying just about everything. Grand Sichuan House was excellent -we had the braised beef with chili sauce, the duck with stringbeans, and the chengdu dumplings. Can't wait to try more of the menu.

As for the Vietnamese spot, I thought it was ok, but nothing amazing. I think we had bun with the pork chop, and the crepe, although it didn't really stand out to me.

And David's Brisket House - excellent! A real gem.

Also, good (if pricey) mezze from Tanoreen (loved the sujok), and almost as good (and much less pricey) delivery from Hazar.

A couple of follow ups, if anyone has particular preferences: thoughts on best burger, aside from Skinflint's or Kettle Black? Best butcher in the neighborhood? And favorite bagels?

Thank you again!

Thanks to all for the replies so far! We will definitely check out Grand Sichuan House and the Vietnamese spot, as well as the others mentioned below. Much appreciated. And I'll be sure to share any places we come across that aren't mentioned here.

Just moved to Bay Ridge - looking for advice (restaurants, provisions, etc)

Hi! I just moved down to Bay Ridge, and am very excited to do some exploring. I would love recs for anything and everything, from ordering in to nicer meals out to grocery shops, etc. I know this is awfully broad, so let me narrow it down a little bit, and also describe what we've discovered so far:

Take-out/delivery:
We've found lots of great sandwiches so far. Paneantico, Zeke's, Zito's chief among them. I also hear good things about Butcher Bar. What are we missing?

Pizza - Peppino's is nearby and I like it quite a bit, and we enjoyed the grandma pie from Nino's. Was not very impressed with Rocco's, though. Any thoughts on other pizza spots to try?

Burgers - we're down the block from Skinflints. I thought the burger was good, but sadly a bit underseasoned. Any other recs? I was not crazy about Kettle Black -they overcooked and underseasoned the burger. Maybe Butcher Bar? Elsewhere?

Chinese - have not tried yet, but hear great things about Grand Sichuan House. Is it still a good pick, and any other spots? Kathy's dumplings? Any Sunset Park spots deliver?

Middle Eastern - have had great take out from the Family Store. Thoughts on places that deliver?

Thai/Vietnamese - is there anything?

Mexican - anything? Any Sunset Park places that will deliver down to 79th Street?

Bagels - tried Bagel Shmagel, which was good but not great. Do people like Bagel Boy? Steve's?

Sweets - aside from Robicelli's, which is fantastic, what do folks like for sweets? Seems like a lot to choose from between french bakeries, middle eastern spots, ice cream places, etc.

I think that covers most of the bases, but would love any suggestions.

Provisions/groceries -
We're really looking for anything and everything. Good butcher, good fish guy, good cheese shop, good beer shop, wine shop, bread bakery, general grocery store, etc. So far ALC seems like a good specialty shop, and the new Brooklyn Market seems like a decent option. But any help finding other places is much appreciated!

Thank you so much, in advance, to anyone who can help! We are thrilled to be in the neighborhood. I'll certainly keep posting as we discover places as well. All the best.

Acela Club at CitiField lately?

Hi all - any chance anyone has been to the Acela Club at CitiField lately? I'm heading tonight and wondering if anything on the menu stands out. I'm not necessarily expecting anything phenomenal, but if there's anything that anyone's really enjoyed, I'd love to know, particularly since I'm not sure that the product on the field will be all that captivating.

Thanks!

Humm and Guidara's Nomad

Just curious - has anyone had the duck at The NoMad so far? And, if so, how does it compare to the EMP duck? (If it is anything like it, the fact that it is available as a single-serving entree, rather than just the whole bird, opens up some extra ordering possibilities, it seems.)

Sauc in its new location?

Thank you so much! My parents will be in the city for their anniversary, and I want to book them a dinner they'll really enjoy - I think it will be perfect for them but wanted to make sure there are no drawbacks after the move. Much appreciated.

Anyone know prices for American caviar (Hackleback, Paddlefish) at Fairway?

Hi all,

I called Fairway before to price some American caviar (Hackleback, Paddlefish), and they refused to give me prices over the phone. I'm hoping to see how it compares to Brooklyn Larder and/or Fresh Direct, and hoping to save a trip down to Red Hook just to see. Looking to purchase 50g or so. Does anyone have any recent experience there, and know prices?

Thanks!

Tea shops in Chinatown?

I am hoping to get some nice tea from a tea shop in Chinatown as a gift, but I'm not so into tea myself and I'm not really sure where to start. Does anyone have any thoughts - any particular shops, types of tea, etc?

Where to find Nduja?

I'm hoping someone has some ideas - Murray's Cheese used to carry Nduja from Boccalone, but it appears that they don't anymore. Anyone know any place that does carry it (either Boccalone's or any other nduja)?

Thanks!

New York Mart (Chinatown) for seafood? Or Deluxe Food Market?

Have any hounds out there purchased (or perused) seafood at the relatively new New York Mart in Chinatown? If so, how does it seem? I've seen some mixed reviews regarding freshness of veggies, but very few write-ups in general. Any thoughts on if I'm better off at Deluxe Food Market, or somewhere else entirely?

Many thanks for any thoughts.

Savoy or Socarrat Nolita?

I know, very different places.

But if I'm looking for a good meal tomorrow night, between the two, any recent reports (or any reports at all of the new Socarrat location)? Good food, comfortable but a bit lively, 4 people able to have a conversation - any thoughts re: one over the other?

Thanks in advance!

Anyone know where I can purchase a torta del casar?

Does anyone know - is there any place (store, not restaurant) in Manhattan where I can purchase torta del casar, the Spanish sheep's milk cheese? No luck so far at Murray's or Despana.

Thanks!

Looking for San Sebastian & Barcelona Suggestions

Just wondering if you've gone on your trip yet, and if so, where you ended up in SS and Hondarribia? I'm off in a couple of weeks myself, and am hoping for more reports than just the Times write-up.

Good food, comfortable spot for 4 guys to catch up?

Thanks - Positano is definitely one of the ones I'll send to my friends; just trying to get a sense of what might be good, and what the Philly dining scene is like. Any favorite dishes at Positano?

Good food, comfortable spot for 4 guys to catch up?

Thanks! These look like some good suggestions. I have a slight concern that some of the Garces places might be a bit on the trendy side, but am I off base about this? (Hip but not trendy is maybe an awkward request, I'm not sure; the sort of place that in NY we've got primarily in Brooklyn is what I'm looking for if that makes any sense.)

Does Aside from these suggestions, does Osteria fit the bill at all? Modo Mio? Zahav? I know in many ways these places differ greatly, but any insights are great. Thanks again.

Good food, comfortable spot for 4 guys to catch up?

Hey everyone -

I did a bit of searching on the board, and couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for, and hoping there are some good ideas out there.

I'm meeting up with three good friends next weekend in Philly. We're looking for a couple good places (we'll have lunch, dinner, and breakfast/brunch the next day). We're making our plans fairly late in the game, so I'm sure we'll have some trouble with reservations in certain places.

I'm not sure how to describe exactly what we're looking for, but here goes - good food, some meat options but not a steakhouse or anything like that. Preferably a somewhat hip place, but nothing uber stylish. A place that we can sit comfortably, drink good beer or good cocktails or whiskey and chat for a while. (Fine, of course, if it's BYO.)

One thought was Village Whiskey, but (1) we've been there and (2) while a little wait, if necessary, is ok, don't want to wait an hour or two if that can be avoided. Also it's a little cramped/rushed for what we're looking for.I've got a few ideas just from poking around, ranging from bars where we can eat and drink well (Monk's, Standard Tap, POPE), to Cochon, to Adsum. But really, we're open to anything that fits the bill. We're staying near the Reading Terminal Market, but can travel around a fair bit for the right place.

Bonus points - also looking for a good bar to spend the night after dinner, good beer/booze, low key enough that we can hear each other speak and won't be standing all night, but not dead either.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Cooking already-smoked ribs?

Thanks everyone! Upon actually seeing the ribs, looks like the friend was mistaken, and they are cooked through already. Which makes the task that much easier. Thanks for all the help.

Cooking already-smoked ribs?

A friend picked up some smoked ribs - not cooked through, just cold smoked. Any thoughts on what best to do with them now? Bonus points for anything on the less time-consuming or labor-intensive end of the spectrum. Thanks!

Popsicle making pointers?

My awesome wife just got me some popsicle molds as part of a birthday gift. We make lots of frozen desserts - generally ice creams and sorbets - and I'm trying to figure out a general approach to take with popsicle. Can anyone provide some general guidance - do I just use the ice cream or sorbet base? Do I churn and then put into the mold to freeze? Do I do something else entirely?

Any pointers are much appreciated! Looking forward to a summer full of ice pops.

Wine stores with good variety of half bottles?

I've got a multi-course BYO dinner coming up in a couple days, and I'd love to find a few great half bottles to pair with our meal. Any ideas about wine stores with a good variety of half bottles?

Many thanks!

Taro sushi omakase?

Has anyone had the old-style omakase recently? I have reservations in front of Chef Sano in a couple weeks, and I'm hoping he won't mind it.

Roberta's - long waits for brunch?

Just to report back - 4 of us got there about 11:30, and the place was mostly empty. slightly more full when we left an hour later, but still plenty of space. And delicious - polenta with poached egg and pork shoulder, ricotta pancakes, benton's bacon, guanciale and egg pizza, all excellent. That is a great place.

Roberta's - long waits for brunch?

I was thinking about checking out Roberta's for brunch this weekend (been there for dinner), but a bit nervous about the wait - thoughs on how long waits generally are at brunch? The same as dinner, better, worse?

Thanks!
