Local Garden bankrupt

The urban farm on Richards is no more. When it comes to boxed arugula, their was so much better (fresh and intensely peppery), so I will miss them.

Any specific brand ruin you for another version of the same candy?

For me, it has to specifically be Haribo MINI bears. So hard to get here, though.

Alternative gratin toppings?

Thanks, tried the fried onion idea tonight and it worked well! I didn't bread them, as I wanted to stick to avoiding breadcrumbs. (If I ate meat, I'd definitely go for bacon.)

Agreed, the broccoli doesn't sound appealing but if anyone tries it, I'd love to hear how it turned out.

Alternative gratin toppings?

Reviving my year-old question because I just saw this article: http://www.thekitchn.com/broccoli-the...

Has anyone tried this?

Fish Counter - Worth Trying

Like the battered fish but it really is a shame about that coleslaw (limp, too much celery seed). Also not a fan of the candied salmon -- the one we got (might've been called "salmon chips") was much too sweet. Have yet to buy actual fresh fish, but plan to soon!

☺Supermarket scavenger hunts: "Why'd they put it THERE?"☺

Maybe I just haven't lived until I've put a teaspoon of chicken essence in my icing (even as I type this, I suspect this has, in fact, been done, somewhere...).

Black Forest Cake?

Not exactly cake, but I tried the BFC cream puff from Beta 5. So good, as are all their cream puffs (though I much prefer the ones that contain custard).

One local store keeps Better Than Bouillon (bouillon paste in jars) in the baking aisle, under the extracts. ??? All other bouillon/stocks/soups are in the soup aisle.

Early dinner, no pork or shellfish, with two smalls, in Vancouver

Update: Fray is gone!

Koi Tapas on Kingsway also closed last week. Had been meaning to try it.

The Last Crumb

Alas, I had the same experience: empty cases, dry food. I hope it improves b/c the space is nice.

Torani Chicken & Waffle Syrup

Did you ever find any? I was mildly interested at first (for the sweet/savory factor) but then I came across this review today!

Xmas Eve sushi scarcity -- west side Vancouver -- please assist!

Not sure about xmas eve but Dan is one of the few open on Mondays. Have you tried them?

Alternative gratin toppings?

Most gratin recipes call for a topping of bread crumbs/panko but do you have a favourite alternative? (I know crackers are used sometimes but I prefer to avoid anything pre-processed.) This would be for a saucy cauliflower/cheese gratin.

Hoshigaki in Vancouver?

Answering myself just in case anyone else is looking: I picked some up at H-Mart downtown. They have 6-packs as well as larger boxes for gifting.

Any new snack you can't get enough of?

These funwari cheese mochi balls. They put all other cheesepuffs to shame. A texture unlike anything else!

Brownies: Edgers vs Insiders

I'm an edger for all things EXCEPT at this one bakery I go to for chocolate babka, where they make them like this (photo shows cinnamon rolls, but same idea):
http://www.elmoensio.com/sisalmykset/...

Then it has to be an inside piece, because the edge ones are bland and dry and don't have as much chocolate!

Veteran Nigiri Sushi Level

I've been a couple of times (but not in over a year). It's just average -- certainly not a destination spot for nigiri.

Pringles ketchup chips, or your votes for other ketchup chips

I still see the Old Dutch boxes around in supermarkets, and I think Mac's convenience stores have them, too. Old Dutch BBQ should only be bought in the boxed format, in fact, b/c they use the old formula whereas the bags use the new (inferior, imo) formula. Btw, the interior bags are now silvery foil instead of clear.

Are You Snacking on Anything Right Now?

Do report back! I should've mentioned I used the super thin type of kavli -- it absorbs the thin layer of mayo and the nut.yeast really bakes in there, hence the Dorito comparison. Not sure how it'd go with a thicker cracker (I, too, have only had Wasa once... I don't think Kavli is *quite* as cardboardy).

Are You Snacking on Anything Right Now?

Trying to approximate a party food I had years ago: mayo, nutritional yeast and some flecks of good salt on kavli, broiled. Almost like a Dorito!

V&V What's for dinner?

I didn't follow a recipe for the filling but I googled and this one is pretty close to what I did:
http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-vegan...

The difference is that I browned the diced tofu in a dry (no oil), non-stick skillet -- I often prep my tofu this way and haven't bothered pressing in years. (I start with firm tofu. When in slices, I'll press down with a spatula once in a while to get some liquid out, but it's not really necessary when it's diced.) The recipe I linked also adds nutritional yeast, which I didn't -- I may try that next time.

A bit of a guilty pleasure but it's cold and rainy here!

Slaw! Can't believe I haven't tried this yet. Thanks! With this and the soup above, I guess I'd completely neglected the cabbage/horseradish combo.

V&V What's for dinner?

Made tofu pot pie (diced and dry-fried the tofu beforehand, no pressing required). So comforting!

Does anyone have any creative uses for prepared horseradish? I love the stuff and like to add it to sandwiches/wraps/etc. but would love some new ideas. (I eat seafood but not other meats.)

Kits Happenings

The sign on their old door says that location was too "out of sight, out of mind." Hopefully, they can handle the (what I assume will be) higher rent!

Kits Happenings

Someone in another thread mentioned a second Pirate Joe's opening at 4th and Vine but it's the old location that's moved there. The Broadway store is now shut.
