Charleston/ Mt Pleasant - seafood market

We're out in Mt Pleasant now and having a great time. Yesterday, we went to Joesph Fields farm on Johns island and then met up with him again at the Mt P market yesterday. Very nice market. After the market we had a nice meal at Gullah Cuisine. We had intended to make it to Seewee, but we were coming up on closing time, so I didn't want to make the trip and have them shut the door as we arrived; coincidently, we met the nephew of the owner over at Geechee Shrimp on Shem Creek right next to Magwood's.

Also hit Normandy Farms Artisan Bakery in West Ashley. Great bakery and wonderful bread. Had their bread at both FIG and The Macintosh. Good news for Mt P -- sounds like they plan to open a cafe in Mt P.

So far, the best meal during our Savannah/Charleston trip was at FIG. Local 11 ten in Savannah was number 2.

Is Melvin's Legendary BBQ near the Whole Foods any good? Where is the best BBQ in the area?

We have enjoyed so many of your tips. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. I will give them a call. As a farmer at heart, I enjoy checking out other farms.

Thanks. Have you been to Ambrose Family Farm (High Cotton supplier) or Thackeray Farms (McCrady's supplier), both on Wadmalaw Island? I understand Ambrose is a u-pick farm for whatever happens to be in season. I haven't yet been able to confirm whether Thackeray sells to the public. Since the two farms are close together, we thought we'd take a drive in that direction one day.

Thanks. I found another place across the Ashley River -- Normandy Farm Artisan Bakery, 32 Windermere Blvd. I understand they provide great bread to a lot of the best restaurants. Are you familiar with them?

Last night in Charleston - dinner quandry; lunch recs too

We'll be in Mt Pleasant the first week of June in a house with a great kitchen, so we decided to cook 3 nights and go out 4. Here's what we've planned so far: Sat - Fig (xing fingers that we can get in); Mon - McCrady's (tasting menu); Wed - Macintosh. We want to get out final fix of low country food on Friday, our last night. Trying to decide between High Cotton and SNOB. Which way should we go? Or would you suggest someplace else for our last night?

We haven't made any lunch reservations. Can you typically walk-in even at nicer places? Any recommendations for Gullah or down home low country lunch places? We'll have a car, so we'll drive for a destination lunch too (Beaufort, Edisto Island, etc.).

Thanks.

Thanks! Ever shopped at Our Local Foods on Clements Ferry Road or at their Thornhill Farms store in McClellanville where they grow their produce? We were thinking about driving out to the McClellanville store so we could also check out the 100 acre farm. I'm an avid urban vegetable gardener. Love to cook fresh from the garden and I'd enjoy getting fresh from the farm produce.

Thanks for researching the bakery! I looked up the seafood markets and found a YouTube video from last year roaming around the Mt P farmer's market. All look great. We're excited to get the fix'ns for some good home cooked meals.

Savannah -- 4 dinners and 3 lunches

Thanks for the tip. Are places still serving local oysters after May 15th? I heard that's when the season closes for the summer.

There is a Gullah place in HH -- roastfish and corn bread. Are you familiar with it? Is it any good for lunch?

Sue, thanks for the great tips. Is there a bakery that you like for great crusty bread? I'd love to get shrimp off the boat, but there are only four of us.

We're staying in a place in Mt. Pleasant at the beginning of June. We'll have a car. Where is the best place to buy fresh seafood? Is shrimp normally available by then? Thanks.

Savannah -- 4 dinners and 3 lunches

We're traveling to Savannah at the end of May and have four dinners and three lunches to fill. My wife and I are foodies, but will be joined by our friends for the last two days who enjoy good food, but are on more of a budget.

For the night we arrive, we're trying to decide between Local 11ten and Noble Fare. We are leaning toward the tasting menu at Noble Fare, but Local 11ten also sounds good. Which would you recommend? We are going to Elizabeth on 37th the next night and will likely have the tasting menu if that colors your recommendation. What else should we consider? We definitely want to try the best southern influenced cuisine in Savannah.

Considering Garibaldi's or the Olde Pink House for the night my friends arrive, but would appreciate other suggestions. Our friends are both originally from Augusta, but currently live in Chicago, so something highlighting southern cuisine would be great. Recommendations for basic down home southern food would also be great.

We'll likely try Mrs. Wilkes for lunch one day, but would love recommendations for the other days. We're planning a day trip to Hilton Head one afternoon, so a suggestion for lunch out there would be great.

Thanks so much. We're looking forward to exploring Savannah's cuisine.
