There's a place up in the Bay if you're ever in there

Recommendations for restaurants that serve good Unagi-ju (Eel over rice)?
I don't find it hard to believe you...that's why I enjoy going to Japan...the food is sublime.

Place Yuu on the Westside...thanks JL I'll make a note of it.
Recommendations for restaurants that serve good Unagi-ju (Eel over rice)?
Thanks silverlake. I know where that place is but I've actually never been...surprisingly given my love for Japanese food.
Recommendations for restaurants that serve good Unagi-ju (Eel over rice)?
Thanks crystaw, Unagi ju and Unagi don are actually the same thing. Thanks for the recommendations.
Recommendations for restaurants that serve good Unagi-ju (Eel over rice)?
What's up 'Hounds. Just throwing out the above request to see if there are any lovers of Japanese food that have any suggestions for restaurants that serve a good unagi-ju. As many Japanese food lovers in L.A. might know by way of personal experience or otherwise, a lot of the eel dishes are far from superlative and have that frozen food taste. I recently came back from Osaka and had the best Kansai-style "Mamushi" (eel over rice) in my life. Any input is appreciated.
Best ramen cities
I actually ate sumashi ramen at Takaraya Ramen in Pontocho last month while on vacation in Kyoto...it was absolutely delicious! Photo attached.
479 Popcorn
I just ordered some today. I ordered The Foodie Sampler pack. The flavors look amazing.
Oden in L.A. County?
Sounds like you had a lovely experience in Asakusa...I'm sure that area of Tokyo, "shitomachi," must have some great oden.
Oden in L.A. County?
Thanks for the heads up...I guess if one really wanted to eat oden @ Yashima...it'd be best to call in advance and make sure they're serving it.
Oden in L.A. County?
Thanks for Yashima recommendation...I'll add it to the list. I recently went to Sawtelle to do a little shopping @ Nijiya across the street from the Olympic Collection so I know exactly where you are talking about.
Oden in L.A. County?
Thanks for your recommendation, arkestra...I'll check it out and bookmark the link for future reference.
Oden in L.A. County?
Yeah that's true, just got to get the dashi right....but yeah they have all ingredients...the hanpen, chikuwa, eggs, fried tofu pouches, etc...I was looking for the easy way out! :)
Oden in L.A. County?
Thanks for the recommendations...as I was well aware...it is a winter dish so I guess seeking it out in the "off season" makes it an even more difficult task to find.
Oden in L.A. County?
Thanks, ipsedixit...I've been to Haru Ulala many times...I guess that's the best that L.A. has to offer...izakayas that also serve oden...I'll have to try their oden next time.
Oden in L.A. County?
Greetings,
Does anybody have any recommendations for Japanese restaurants that specialize in Oden? I know it's a typically winter fare but I am personally not aware of any Japanese restaurants that serve oden. Any thoughtful responses are greatly appreciated!
I've attached a photo of the typical simmered food items that make up oden.
What is the name of the Japanese chain
Thanks. I've already visited that site but was wondering if there possibly was further information on the situation. Last thing I read was the founder of Gindaco quoted in the Japan Times as saying he wanted to open a store in L.A.....but that was a couple of years ago already.
What is the name of the Japanese chain
Has anybody heard any more info about Gindaco opening a store in the Los Angeles area....I was hoping one would have opened already but I fear that's not the case.
Recommendations for omuraisu
I ate the omuraisu at Curry House today. It was decidedly average. I prefer the katsu curry dishes there. The omuraisu was not bad, not great.
Pink's --- WTF!
I see your point, a dog for ppl with different sensibilities...I always like the recession special at Gray's - 2 dogs and a drink....a nice fix.
Recommendations for omuraisu
I've been there but only after I'm drunk :) Having said that, I haven't been to Hodori for years though...don't kick it in K-town that much anymore.
Recommendations for omuraisu
Hey folks,
I was wondering if anybody had recommendations for restaurants that serve up a tasty omuraisu (omelette rice)? I know that Curry House serves it although I have yet to try it. Rather than merely searching for places that serve it, I also would like to hear from those who've had the dish at places they might be recommending, if possible. Thanks.
Izakaya Honda Ya - Little Tokyo
what the heck is kyushu? Kyushu is a geographical location (i.e. island) in southern Japan....
Takoyaki and other goodies at San Sui Tei in Little Tokyo…
Haru Ulala in Little Tokyo on Second and Central seves Takoyaki AND Okonomiyaki, two Osaka favorites...but neither are on the menu...you just have to ask for it. They load both with sauce and katsuboshi....very delicious
Pasadena Whole Foods - wow!
Just went to the Whole Foods in Pasadena this past Sunday. The market is really impressive and much bigger than two other Whole Foods that I have frequented. Their vast selections of fresh produce and foods is amazing.
Pink's --- WTF!
I am an L.A native. The Pink's dogs are vastly overrated...I used to live in New York....a hot dog at Gray's Papaya beats a Pink's dog anyday.
Daikokuya fading?
I agree with many people in this thread...Daikokuya has gone down hill. I've been there twice in about 3 months and the broth lacks the depth it use to have and I tried the oyako don -- it was really bad...the quality of the chicken was quite poor and the sauce was thin and unsavory.
I hate to say it but ever since the Japanese guy, the one with the tattooes (he was actually photograped in GQ for August '06 when they did an article on Daikokuya), left the broth is not as good and even the presentation is off....the Chashu pork wasn't neatly arranged but rather submerged in the broth...granted it's melt in your mouth good but it's all in little bits instead of whole slices because it is submerged in the soup.
I totally agree with cyntia105 the broth was watered down....this used to be my hands down favorite....I don't think so anymore.
Fisherman's Outlet
This place is an L.A. institution! I've been going there for over 10 years. The seafood is fresh and the prices are amazing, given the portions they dish out. This place is a gold mind...I once overheard one of the workers talking to a customer....the employee mentioned that Fisherman's Outlet makes over 10 million dollars in revenue a year!
The seafood is obviously fresh and tasty.
Daikokuya fading?
They have put in an A/C and hence the restaurant is more well ventilated.
