"Serious" Coffee Shops in Japan

Looks interesting. I do wonder though, whether others are aware that the links you often provide are to a website you founded and/or operate (i.e., bento.com).

Gaijin-friendly sushi bookable at short notice for up to 12,000?

A friend has informed me that Kyubei in the New Otani Hotel in Akasaka-Mitsuke/Nagatacho has excellent sushi. I imagine they would be able to handle reservations in English, but I am not sure.

Hungarian wine in Tokyo

I just did a search on Rakuten and found this:

http://item.rakuten.co.jp/wineuki/120...

There were other Hungarian wine search results that popped up too. Another idea would be to contact Raspi or Malatinsky directly and ask for their distributor in Japan (assuming they can handle inquiries in English). I did the same for a South African wine I enjoy and it worked.

Lunch at Pachon

For Cassoulet, I can recommend Lauburu in Omotesando. It's very reasonable and more casual than Pachon.

In English, see:

My only reservations about this place are (i) they do not allow you to share plates (and seem offended if you ask); and (ii) the service can at times be inattentive. I was there one evening with friends and a Japanese movie actress was at a nearby table...while they fawned over her and her guest, they treated us somewhat like a nuisance (think John Cleese a la Fawlty Towers). Just a bad night maybe...I still do recommend it for their cassoulet, which is perfect for this cold weather.

Good BYOB restaurant in Tokyo?

You didn't mention any of that nor did I state that you did, Robb.. I was merely stating my preference as to the type of restaurant I prefer; it was not intended as a reflection of anything you wrote.

Good BYOB restaurant in Tokyo?

Thanks Robb. I generally prefer smaller, family/chef-owned bistros like the long-gone La Petite Chaise (rather than the type that seem to cater specifically to expats), but I appreciate the response. I think the thing is to build up a relationship with a place and then test the waters.

Looking for a Spanish Restaurant in Tokyo

Doesn't Tio Danjo have a place on the second floor for sit-down meals? At least that's what a friend told me.

Good BYOB restaurant in Tokyo?

I used to frequent a good French-style bistro in Daikanyama (now closed) that, after several years of patronage, allowed us to bring in special bottles of wine. I miss that experience. I'd appreciate any recommendations for such a place in Tokyo; preferably Western cuisine (I don't care about Michelin ratings; as long as the chef is good and the ambience welcoming, I'm fine). I'd be happy to pay a reasonable corkage fee and/or order a bottle off the house list too.

coffee beans in Tokyo

I bought green beans and a pan for hand-roasting over the stovetop at a shop in Shinjuku (near Kinokuniya bookstore). It took me about 15 minutes to roast them to my satisfaction (dark) over my gas stove. It was fun for a while but the pan only held about 60 grams; the novelty wore off quickly.. There are electric roasters available too. It was nice to have the smell of roasting coffee (and the sound of beans cracking) though.

Intelligentsia looks like good coffee; does one have to wear woolen headgear in warm weather to purchase from them?

There's also Daibo in Omotesando; that guy roasts his own beans; it's pricey, but they're darn good beans.

Fresh foie gras in Tokyo

Thank you for the info.. I'll check out Kinokuniya or Isetan.

I saw some frozen lobes at Takashimaya in Niko-Tama but they didn't look so good..

Fresh foie gras in Tokyo

Does anyone know where one can purchase fresh foie gras in the Tokyo area? I'd prefer a brick-and-mortar store....

Junior's deli coming to Japan

Gotcha. I had figured that might be the case. The best thing to do is make a trip to Manhattan then, isn't it.

FYI.

I don't know anything about this chain; does this bode well for those of us who crave good pastrami?

Tokyo's Romantic Restaurants...

Here's an update on A ta Gueule in Ebisu--they moved all the way out to Kiba. I liked it when they were in Ebisu; it was indeed romantic.
