Searching for lemon cake/dessert
The IGA near Atwater market has a lemon cake that used to be amazing. I haven't had it in months so I don't know it it's still as good though.
Jarred pasta sauces?
I haven't seen the sauce you're looking for but Costco has a jarred Marinara sauce that's pretty good for something out of a jar. I'm blanking on the name so I'm probably no help but I thought I'd mention it.
Where to find an awesome banana split?
Does anyone still make them anymore? (Besides DQ and other chains)
Is there someplace in the Cote-des-Neiges area?
Thanks,
Melly
Pregnancy craving -- searching for Spumoni
Can anyone point me towards some? Close to NDG would be great.
Thank you so much!
Cutesy baking stuff -- where to go besides Ares?
I'm having a tea party on Tuesday and of course left most of the work until the last minute.
If you were going shopping tomorrow and wanted to buy cute cutters and sprinkles and the like where would you go?
Is Papillion open on Sundays?
Thanks!

Strange fruit?
Thank you everyone!
I ended up with a LOT of neat things, the first meeting I shopped mainly near Victoria and Sherbrooke as well as the IGA in St. Henri and ended up with: blood oranges, passion fruit, grenadillo (the hit of the night), carambola, ramboutan (another hit), mangousteen (awful quality, an $8 waste from IGA), cactus pear, kumquats, pomelo and many other things I can't remember.
This week I went to Jean Talon market and hit paydirt: longan, kiwi berries, aloe (ICK!!!), kiwano, pitiyaha, dragon fruit, guaybana, baby bananas, cheymoya (the hit of the night), sugar cane, sweet and meyer lemons, a mango from Haiti that was amazing and something I still don't know the name of and so much more.
My Cubs tried everything and had a BLAST. Thank you all so much for your advice.
Strange fruit?
Tonight I want to initiate my Cubs into the wonderful world of exotic fruit.
I managed to find passion fruit and mangosteens and ramboutans but I know there's more out there. I was tempted to pick up some durian but that might turn them off fruit forever.
Have you seen anything cool lately? Any suggestions for a good place to shop?
Thanks!
Looking for a place with "personality"
Thanks!
Dim Sum is a good idea but I was thinking of trying the Mongolian Hot Pot place in Chinatown. Or is the one in Brossard better?
Looking for a place with "personality"
I wanted to take her somewhere really different. She's been up here often enough that we've hit most of the mainstays.
When we go there we do stuff like the Jeckyll and Hyde club or family-style in Little Italy and the "sword" thing is something we keep meaning to do but never manage.
Thanks!
Looking for a place with "personality"
A friend is coming up from NYC for a few days and we're using her as an excuse to go out. Being as how it's just after Christmas the higher end places are beyond our means (we've done a few of them in any case).
I'd like to go somewhere with a "thing" -- your meat comes around on a sword, the owner tells you what to order and talks to you as it's cooking... not sure how clear I'm making this. I don't mean something like O noir but something fun would be nice.
We'll be three adults and two teens so I need to find a place that will appeal to all of us but won't cost a fortune.
Thanks!
Pan de Meurto?
We have a new Cub leader who's from Cancun and he's feeling a little homesick. He was talking about how much he's going to miss having Pan de Meurto because he waits all year for it.
I thought there might be a place in town that sells it? Help? Please?
Where can I get a good pizza stone in Mtl?
I just discovered the book "Artisan Breads in 5 Minutues" (there are excerpts online if you're curious) and while none of the recipes are truly that quick I would like to try them out.
The thing is-- you're supposed to use a pizza stone to bake on and I don't have one. Where can I get one? Is there something I can use as a substitute? How much do they cost anyways?
Thanks!
M.
On the hunt for sumac berries
Something to bear in mind if you harvest your own: Sumac berries get most of their flavour from ascorbic acid which washes away when they get wet. So you have to get them when it hasn't rained for awhile and be comfortable with the fact that you can't clean them.
Of course I read this about a thousand years ago and can't cite my source anymore so you might want to get a second opinion...
Seville oranges - where at ?
Akhavan has them, don't remember the price though. (sorry!)
Driving South for the first time, where to eat?
We're absolutely planning on going at least as far as Charleston-- we were there last Spring without the kids and loved it. They really want to do the touristy stuff in Myrtle Beach so we sort of have to pay it a visit. *I* want to see Savannah!
I'm sorry if this isn't allowed but any thoughts on what area has the best beachcombing? I know it will be too cold to swim but the 16y/o collects shells.
Driving South for the first time, where to eat?
Thank you all sooooooo much!
I would a hundred times rather go to somewhere like The Wreck than some other touristy place. We grownups visited Charleston last March and missed out on it because we didn't have a car and weren't so great at navigating Mt. Pleasant by bus.
Driving South for the first time, where to eat?
Sorry! Not too bright tonight. I'll edit the original question. :)
Driving South for the first time, where to eat?
The first week of March my Best Beloved and our teens (13 and 16) will embark on our first road trip south of the Mason Dixon line. We're going at least as far as Myrtle Beach and hopefully to Charleston and Savannah as well.
We're on a budget so the less frills the better but we will splurge at least once or twice. We're not picky and love to try new stuff. I'd like the kids to see what real BBQ is like, you'd die if you saw what passes for Q in Montreal, Canada and three out of four of us love seafood.
So, where would you eat?
edited to add: They're picking me up in NYC (we have that one covered) and we're probably driving the long way around through Delaware and Maryland over to Virginia Beach and down the coast. My son is a huge Ripley's fan so we have to hit those on the way down. We're in it for the adventure so a bit of backroading is cool. Going home we'll be more direct and cut through DC.
Can I find food grade silicone in Montreal?
I want to make some jello molds of my own design but don't have a credit card so ordering the mold powder online becomes a problem.
Surely there is *somewhere* in the city that I can get the supplies I need?
Help? Please?
Happening gourmand
On Thursday we had reservations at Studio 701 for us and our two teens. We goofed and were late. I wasn't sure where the restaurant was since I could only find the bar Studio 701 so I asked the coatcheck girl and got sent downstairs.
They didn't have our reservation (I thought because it was so late) but they seated us anyways. Very nice waiter took our drink order and when we opened our menus we discovered we were in the wrong place! Went back and explained to the hostess, she checked upstairs but it was really full and loud by now and there were no tables. We decided to stay downstairs (Aix?) where the prix fixe was a little more and the kids were graciously allowed to order off the upstairs menu. I found the Studio menu was better. My lamb was nicely done but the sauce was a little salty, same with the sirloin my partner ordered. The deserts were heavenly.
Our waiter was really, really wonderful. We never go out anywhere really nice and he made us feel like we belonged there. I don't know how to express this quite right-- the whole thing was a little embarrassing but he just went with it and made us feel like valued, long-time customers. I almost wanted to hug him.
To sum up-- a great meal but I would go back to Studio 701 before Aix (I think the Terroir shares the same kitchen?).
Key Limes, Meyer Lemons & Chinese Mandarin Oranges available
National on Sherbrooke near Claremont had the mandarins. They were really good and so cute and tiny!
Cuban Espresso?
Thank you all! I knew I could find an answer here.
The Cafe would be a nice surprise for her, I'll pass along the info.
Cuban Espresso?
My Best Beloved has requested I ask you fine folks where we could find "Cuban Espresso" in the city. Since it's a gift for someone I would assume she means the beans.
Help? Please?
Quidi Vidi restaurant
Any chance you could narrow it down at all? My wife is a copy editor at the Gazette and is willing to look but obviously she can't go through three years of microfiche. She will, however, set me up to do it if it's that important to you. :)
Do you know where I could find these?
I saw Cherimoya at my local fruit store last week and was shocked. So shocked in fact that I've lost the name of the store. It's the big one on Queen Mary just West of Decarie. I know sugar apples (very similar) are in season in Chinatown right about now.
Restaurant Kremlin: Cuisine of the CCCP?
There's an amazing place on Decarie about half a block north of Queen Mary called Georgia. We don't go there nearly often enough.
Tea Time in Charleston?
We'll be visiting Charleston for a few blissful days the first week of March and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a nice place for an Afternoon Tea.
Sadly we'll be car-free so I won't be able to go to the tea plantation.
