Where are Fresno/Clovis Chowhounds getting their turkeys?

You may want to check out what they have at Bentley's. I just got their newsletter and I know they are carrying several different ones. Also, FYI, they are having their one year anniversary on Saturday. Lot's of samples, etc. Unfortunately, I will be out of town and will miss it.

Pastrami in LA [split from California]

I am dying to try Langer's. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about their pastrami. Although last time I was in LA (July/August), Cantor's pastrami was to die for. I am going down there this weekend. Unfortunately, they are not open on Sunday (but open on Saturday--different for a Jewish Deli).

We are in Orange County on Saturday to see to see the Cirque show and won't be anywhere near them. The only Jewish deli I know of in Orange County is Jerry's, so I guess we will go there for sour tomatoes and black and white cookies (plus pastrami and corned beef).

I was so sorry to hear that the 2nd Ave Deli closed. As a Valentine's Day gift for my sweetie (a couple of years ago), I ordered pastrami, corned beef and black and white cookies from them as a surprise. They sent along a jar of their mustard. Now that was mustard and I am a TOTAL mustard snob!

Now I am thinking of ordering H and H bagels as a surprise for him for the holidays. He claims that no one has good bagels in Fresno. I like Uncle Harry's--so sue me! Although I haven't been there for a couple of years. He claims they are not "New York" bagels. I think Giada said on TV her favorite bagels were H and H in New York. Anyone try them?

Soup and other remedies [Fresno]

Great soups at Imperial Garden. YUM!

Fresno Hounds, Sur la Table is Coming Soon!

Sur La Table opens on Halloween! YES!

Chinese in Fresno

I also love Imperial Garden. Really can't go wrong there. They make a broiled fish dish that is to die for. You have to phone in a day in advance to get it and you end up with a whole fish. I haven't ordered it in a while but I think it was about $30 or so. It depends on the size of the fish. I HIGHLY recommend it if you are having meeting a group of people there. Absolutely delicious. BTW, so is their Chinese Chicken Salad but ask for shrimp on it instead of the chicken.

Pastrami in Fresno

Fat Paulie's is NOT on the north east side of Clovis and Herndon. It is on the South East side of Clovis and Herndon. They face north (if I recall correctly). There is a market in that shopping center. They also make a great (or used to) milk shake there as well.

Pastrami in Fresno

I was very disappointed in the pastrami sandwich at New York Deli. Where is the meat? It only had a few slices on the bread. Most of the Jewish deli's I have eaten at at least have a good amount of meat on the sandwich (although my boyfried, who is from New York points out that the New York Deli is not a Jewish Deli).

Years ago, I had a good pastrami sandwich at Fat Paulie's in Fresno. I think they have moved onto Clovis and were in the shopping center at Herndon and Clovis Ave. I haven't tried the one at Sam's. Lenny's wasn't bad, just wished there was more meat on it.

Best pastrami sandwich I have ever eaten has been at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles and Carnegie Deli in Vegas. Now, that was a sandwich!

Crab Cakes in Fresno?

You might want to check out Dai Bai Dang and Bentley's. Dai Bai Dang's crab cakes were yummy and served with a tropical fruit salsa. Not the traditional crab cakes one gets back on the eastern seaboard, but good.

Bentley's had them last Thursday and was giving out samples. You can tell they were more traditional with the Old Bay Seasoning in them and with the bread crumbs on the outside. I found them to be rather filling just on the sample piece alone. I am not wild about Old Bay Seasoning so I thought they were OK, but they might be the more traditional ones you are looking for.
