Restaurant Birthday Party- You're Invited But You Have to Pay

I'm your age and I feel the same. I feel like it'd be rude to assume anything other than I'd be expected to pay for myself.

Dok Bua downhill?

I got takeout from there awhile ago and found it to be very spicy and tasty.

Got a craving for Ramen

Ittoku's ramen is meh, though the place is worth it for yakitori. I haven't found a Boston ramen place that has blown me away. There's a little restaurant tucked in a corner of the Super 88 food court called Pikaichi that satisfies cravings when they come along.

another aside about lunch options in that area...does anyone know what's going on with the four burgers on boylston around the corner from the Transportation building?

It's had a sign that says "closed today" for the last six months.

Your Mashed Cauliflower recipe?

Steam some cauliflower so it's soft.

Roast a head of garlic with olive oil and salt.

Mash it all together w/ a food processor, drizzling in extra olive oil if necessary.

Decadent and delicious, pretty healthy.

Too bad, that food court could use a halfway decent lunch option.

Mandalay

Have you tried cooking anything from Burma: Rivers of Flavor by Naomi Duguid? I never had that roasted chicken, and I can't remember if there's a roast chicken recipe in there, but everything I've made from that book has come out delicious.

Instacart- are people using it? How is it working out?

It's definitely much more expensive than going to the store, but when I broke my wrist over the winter, it was really really helpful (I carry my groceries home). They did a pretty decent job of picking out produce for me, and often called me from the store with questions.

Paris Baguette in H Mart Central Sq.- Your Fav Items?

I've only had a sweet rice doughnut filled with red bean paste. I thought it was pretty tasty, though it didn't blow it away. The rice gave it a nice chewiness.

Allston dinner crawl tonight?

The food court is the Super 88--make sure you get banh mi from Pho Viet's! If you're going later, they may be sold out of some of the banh mi, though.
Inside of the Super 88 you should also get cumin lamb skewers at One of the Kind.

I second Garlic 'n' Lemons
Deep Ellum is right next door to Lone Star (same owners) and has some pretty good food.
Jo Jo Taipei
Kaju Tofu House is good Korean. I've never been a huge fan of BonChon.

If you're willing to zigzag from Brighton Ave to Comm Ave, Ittoku for yakitori. Shanghai Gate is also very good Chinese food.

21st birthday ideas with parents

Eastern Standard is definitely a great choice--just be sure to watch out for a home Sox game, since it can get kind of mobbed!

Other places with really good cocktails: the beehive in the south end (never tried their food, but I like the drinks, and they have live music), Coppa in the South End, and Russell House Tavern in Harvard Square.

Banh Mi: Is there a more delicious cheap lunch?

Pho Viet's banh mi are out of this world. The other banh mi place in the food court (the one on your left hand side when you walk in) isn't nearly as good.

As for other places at the 88, I love One of the Kind's lamb skewers and their ma po tofu--lots of ma la goodness. I've been wanting to get the jja jang myun at the Korean place, but always seem to get lured in by the banh mi...

A Non-Offensive Universally Acceptable Meal

Honestly, probably nothing. I have vegetarian friends and vegan friends and paleo friends and friends with allergies.

Closest we could probably do is a make-your-own taco bar type thing.

That's why most social gatherings are informal and potluck style.

Totto Ramen?

I haven't yet, but live very very close and keep planning to go, but have been traveling for work/had other dinner engagements.

Will be sure to report back.

The best thing you've never had?

I'm allergic to nuts, including almonds. I've always wanted to try macarons. They're so pretty!

I never will though. :(

Hmm, if I was planning an anniversary dinner today somewhere on the red line do you think I need reservations in order to avoid NU graduates?

(Any suggestions welcome, I'm blanking on where to go.)

Bringing food/coffee into another shop

There's a taco place near my apt that does a delicious breakfast. They sell coffee, but not iced coffee, which I prefer. When I asked if they had iced coffee, the owner told me I could run next door and get an iced coffee from the coffee shop next door while my food was being cooked.

Had he not encouraged me to do that, I probably would have gotten either a hot coffee or a soda. But I so appreciated the gesture that I tipped the price of the coffee on top of the normal tip I left and I became a regular patron of their breakfast (and I always bring in an iced coffee.)

So yes, it's rude if it's not explicitly okay with the owner, but a restaurant owner can definitely win over a customer by being okay with it.

Pregnant mama in search of chocolate-based peanut butter ice cream

Talenti makes a pretty decadently delicious peanut butter cup ice cream:

"Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup
We blend our Belgian Milk Chocolate gelato with a rich swirl of creamy, organic peanut butter. Then, we add all-natural mini chocolate peanut butter cups for our take on a flavor everyone loves."

H Mart Open in Central Square!

It's definitely the same chain. I believe it's Japanese, not Korean, so probably exactly what you're thinking of (sweet, kind of thick sauce over katsu.)

I used to work a block away from the Go Go Curry in NYC (when I lived there), and I went once and never really went back.

H Mart Open in Central Square!

If it's anything like the Go Go Curry in NYC, it'll be sweeter and not spicy at all.

I'm not a fan, but I tend not to like sweeter non-dessert foods.

Grocery delivery/pick up services

I've used Fresh Direct and a service called Instacart, where an individual actually goes and does your shopping for you. Instacart has been great because they will actually call you and ask about subbing stuff. Once the woman shopping for me called and asked if I still wanted X produce, since it didn't look great.

With Instacart you actually choose which grocery store they go to so the produce I've gotten is varied because of that.

I live in a city and don't have a car, so I carry my food home with me. Most of the time that's fine, but sometimes I just Don't Feel It and prefer to use the service. I always tip very well.

Birthday Dinner-Allston

Oh hey, I live right next door to Boston Wine School.

Within walking distance:
If you like Japanese izakaya food, Ittouku is a few steps away and is kind of fun.

Deep Ellum is a quick walk away--just walk down Allston St to Brighton Ave.

Shanghai Social Club is just across the street and is fun for a party.

And you're literally right across the street from the B line.

Variations on Bolognese rag├╣ theme: Sweet spices

I always put a dash of cinnamon in my fairly classic Bolognese ragu sauce. It adds a really amazing depth of flavor.
