Birthday Dinner-Allston

Oh hey, I live right next door to Boston Wine School.

Within walking distance:
If you like Japanese izakaya food, Ittouku is a few steps away and is kind of fun.

Deep Ellum is a quick walk away--just walk down Allston St to Brighton Ave.

Shanghai Social Club is just across the street and is fun for a party.

And you're literally right across the street from the B line.

Variations on Bolognese ragù theme: Sweet spices

I always put a dash of cinnamon in my fairly classic Bolognese ragu sauce. It adds a really amazing depth of flavor.

Coffee shop on the water

Gather is part of District Hall, which is a city-run "Innovation Center." There's a coffee shop called Brew around the corner, but you can also just go and and sit and work in the lounge there. Free wifi and you can stay as long as you want. It's geared towards Boston's startup/freelance community but it's open to the public and you don't even need to buy anything.

It's close to South Station/the Silver line, right across from the ICA. Pretty sure there's a water view.

Best take out Indian in Cambridge area

My roommate and I have developed a habit of getting takeout from Shan-A-Punjab in Brookline...I haven't had the tikka masala, but everything's been very good.

It's on Harvard Ave just beyond Comm Ave, so not that far from Harvard Sq

The Lovely Lemon

I hate that too! I love lemons in everything but water.

The Lovely Lemon

I put it on most of my sushi unless I'm eating at some super high-end omakase type place (which is almost never.) I like to mix lemon juice with soy sauce.

The Lovely Lemon

when I was in college, my friends used to love birthday cake shots (cover a lemon wedge in sugar. fill a shot glass half vodka, half hazelnut liquor--then drink the shot and suck on the sugared lemon.) They swear it tastes just like cake!

What to do with Kale, Turnip Greens & Cole slaw mix?

I like to chop up greens, saute in olive oil with garlic, and then mix with orzo and dress with parm and lemon.

Have you ever made kale chips before?

Odd Dinner Guest Mix

I agree. Some vegetarians don't care, but many is.

Honestly, if you're thinking about using parm in a recipe for a vegetarian, maybe just call up the friend and ask them their feelings on it.

If you can find something like pecorino con caglio vegetale, that's a hard cheese that is NOT made with animal rennet.

Definitely agreed! A high quality, nutty cheese cut into thin slivers is essential.

Odd Dinner Guest Mix

Is this a formal dinner or more informal? I've done a "make your own tacos" type thing while hosting veg friends--warm tortillas, a bowl of braised shredded chicken, some roast vegetables, some beans, some nopales...as well as various kinds of cheese, cilantro, onions. Really, whatever you feel comfortable making. Then everyone makes their own and is happy.

Homemade pizza or a roast vegetable tart.

The Lovely Lemon

Lemon juice is probably my most used condiment...

Some of my favorites:
Chicken soup with lemon juice
roasted cauliflower/potatoes/other vegetables with a lemon rosemary garlic mix
Orzo with spinach, parm and lemon juice
As a salad dressing with olive oil
As a salad dressing WITHOUT olive oil (arugula/parm with lemon juice is the best salad ever)
Fish with lemon/white wine/butter sauce

Moving to Boston soon, where to go for first dinner?

Russell House Tavern in Harvard Sq is really good and has good shellfish. BF and I go there often on Saturday nights and never make a reservation, if we're there fairly early the wait is usually pretty quick.

Eastern Standard in Kenmore Sq might be a good bet too.

Odd/Nontraditional Sushi Rolls?

I don't remember where it was, but I used to frequent a place that had a sweet potato tempura roll on the menu and I always loved that.

Does Anyone Else Crave the Taste of Bottled Water?

I crave cold water constantly. I don't detect much of a taste difference between bottled and tap though.

Anyone else giving up their Supermarkets for Costco/Trader Joe's. .

I've also been able to buy things like Morningstar Farms products and Dorot garlic cubes at my TJ's (in the Boston area), though I don't know about overflows.

For more context, I shop for myself only (no kids, I have a BF who I don't live with). I love cooking and baking, but I tend to cook myself simple meals (roast vegetables, chicken or fish with a simple lemon juice/hot sauce prep, rice or pasta.)

I think TJ's is really well-suited as a primary grocery store for people like me but if I were shopping for my sister's family (four kids) I can see how it would fall short.

Allergy etiquette question

Yes, I often don't like being a bit rude but I don't always trust when people tell me 'it's nut-free!' so I have to interrogate them a bit.

The liqueurs thing is a big one.

Or like when my friend made a pizza and I asked her what was in it. "Don't worry, no nuts!" "Okay, but what's in it?" "Vegetables, pesto and cheese!" :|

Allergy etiquette question

Thanks everyone!

BF and I called her last night to thank her for inviting me and to find out if I could bring anything (bf's family knows I enjoy cooking/baking). Managed to make a joke about how I'd make "anything but pecan pie!" and she laughed and told me that she remembered my allergy from last year and not to worry.

I do 90% of my shopping at TJ's. The other 10% is split between Whole Foods (mostly for 365 products and produce), farmer's markets, the kosher market and the Asian market nearby.

TJ's and WF are both within walking distance. WF is about .5 a mile and TJ's is about a mile. The other major grocery chains are farther, so that's not even a draw.

Allergy etiquette question

The worst is honestly my parents! It's a miracle I survived to adulthood...

My mother freaked out once because she saw me eating a sesame seed bagel, but then gave me a container of pine nut pesto.

Every holiday, without fail, my dad asks if I will bake him a pecan pie.

Allergy etiquette question

I'm going to my BF's aunt's house for Thanksgiving. I have a nut allergy.

Last year, she made a stuffing with walnuts and cooked it inside the turkey, rendering it inedible for me. No big deal, I'm not a huge turkey fan and there were more than enough sides to fill me up. She seemed a little distressed that I wasn't able to eat the main dish.

Would it be ruder to have my BF send her an e-mail or FB message to remind her or ruder to not and not be able to eat her food again, assuming she makes the same recipe? If you were hosting, would you want to know, or would you want to make your recipes in peace and not worry about your nephew's girlfriend's allergy?

I'm perfectly happy filling up on side dishes (I tend to like the vegetable dishes more anyway), but I just want to be a good guest. :(

Eating raw eggs

I was raised to cook my eggs till dry and crumbly because of salmonella. I thought I hated eggs when I was a kid, until I discovered the joys of super-runny eggs.

I've had salmonellosis (not from eggs though) and while it was a thoroughly unpleasant experience, it hasn't made me change my eating habits, especially since I probably got it from tomatoes or peppers.
