DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies ~ Jersey

Finally made it to Delorenzo's yesterday. Quite a ride from home, but my birthday, my pick! The ride was an hour plus, but wife & son both agree, we will definitely be making that trip again! Tom246 you nailed it in your review. I love all types of pizza as well, but Delorenzo's is without a doubt the gold standard. We tried two pies.1/2 plain 1/2 sausage, and clam. The clam pie is loaded with clams, and the oregano matches the briny-ness very well. The sausage pie was perfect, So perfect in fact we ordered an additional one to go. Thanks again for your review.

What do you listen to while cooking?

Tonight Clutch & Slipknot, tomorrow, maybe Joe Bonomassa or Badlands. Always Rock or Metal in the kitchen, dinning room is always Blues.

Best Fries

Thank you hotdoglover. I grew up going there, and it just didn't feel right last year. I'll still have to go at least once this year.

Thanks for the heads up. Did you notice if the liquor license returned, or is it still hot dogs only this year?

Egg Sandwiches? My vote goes to Pluggy's on Front St. in Union Beach. Bacon, Egg, Cheese & Potato! I haven't been to Frank's since I was in culinary school, we used to skip out at break and go eat cheeseburgers at the counter! I definately have to go check it out again.

Best Fries

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who loves the fries at the Memphis Pig Out, they're my favorite. Also mentioned were the Keansburg Boardwalk fries (with white vinegar, somewhere through the years the malt vinegar was replaced), not from the Heidelberg though, the stand is located outside of the bar, but for years it was the only outside food that was allowed into the Heidelberg. Sadly the Heidelberg stopped serving beer last year, and this year became a sub shop, so unfortunately those hot dog cravings from there will never be satisfied. As far as sweet potato fries go, I enjoyed the sweets from Boom, however imho McDonagh's Pub in Keyport has the best I've ever had. They also serve very good burger.

Your "Go To" Beer?

It all sounds great! I wanted to pick up more Wacko this past weekend, but the shop I went to doesn't carry Magic Hat (or at least didn't have it that day). I did make a pretty good haul, along with a bag of Death Rain habanero potato chips! The only thing I've tried so far from this trip is Troegs Dreamweaver Wheat, very nice spice, good body & light finish, (helped cool of the chips nicely), and Stone Levitation Ale, very hoppy, almost grapefruit-like, nice malt, dry finish. Also had to pick up a case of my preferred 'lawnmower' beer, PBR's in bottles, from the only place in NJ that I know of that carries it in bottles, Oak Tree Buy-Rite, in South Plainfield.

Here it is =Mark listed in the ingredients.

Definately not defending a chain here though, I'll still choose 10th Ave Burrito any time! I did try Chipotle once in Maryland last year, it was ok.

Nice Dinner in Rehoboth

My wife and I thouroghly enjoyed our dinner at The Blue Moon on Baltimore Ave. last summer. I had wanted to post last year , and didn't, and now I can't remember exactly what we had, except for a Fig & Blue Cheese Tart, a Duck Leg Confit appetizer, Rockfish (Striped Bass) over local Corn & Tomatoes (there was more to the dish but memory fails), and my son enjoyed a wonderful Steak Frittes w/ NY Strip.

We ate in quite a few places, and this meal stood out. I'm suprised there aren't more posts about the Blue Moon on the Rehoboth threads.

We also enjoyed a couple of trips to the Dogfishhead Brewpub. I loved the wood oven Pizzas, the crust with the added barley was addictive. Just as an aside the Dogfishhead Brewery tour was well worth the 10 mile ride from Rehoboth, all you have to do is call ahead or register online to reserve your tickets.

Jameson's - Neptune

bgut1, I finally made it to Jameson's last week, and not a moment too soon. I finally caught it open on a drive-by, and almost rolled my jJeep over turning in to the parking lot. The food? Dessert first! I took home (well to work) one of Jameson's housemade Sweet Potato Pies, (run don't walk) and me & my crew polished it off in about 15 minutes. It was simply the best Sweet Potato Pie I've ever had, and I can never pass that pie up. On to the food, I ordered the Chicken & Pork Rib Combo, with white meat chicken (how un-cheffy of me huh?) The chicken was great, as were the ribs, but the Collards! So tender & flavorful, made with Smoked Turkey Wings, lots of time (as in clock), and a whole lot of love & know-how! I was tempted to get more to go, that is until I saw the Sweet Potato pie.

As I was waiting for my lunch I noticed a history book on display, the history of Keyport NJ. I asked the gentleman behind the counter what the story was with the book, and he told me he was from Keyport, also my home town. The gentleman turned out to be Bob Jameson. As great as the food was, and it truly is, the man was even nicer. He came out and sat with me for a while, and told me a .little history of our town, he also showed me his awesome catering truck, and said how he was down in Washinton D.C. for the inauguration with it. So in addition to the restaurant,be on the lookout this summer for Jameson's at food festivals as well.

Diaz Back?

Just returned from lunch at Diaz Flavor, excellent! I had been to the previous 2 locations many times, but this was the best visit yet! I almost always order the Cuban Sandwich, as I did today, but also tried the Mofongo for the first time as well as the Oxtail Special. The Cubano was exactly as equal_Mark has described, and the Oxtails were nothing short of AMAZING. They were slow cooked in a sauce of garlic& tomato, highly seasoned but not spicy at all. The sauce these oxtails give off is as good, if not better than the actual pieces of meat. It was so sticky and delicious, the provided napkins actually stick to your fingers when you try to wipe them off, although you should probably lick your fingers clean! The service was extremely friendly & informative, as it always has been at any of the Diaz incarnations I've been to, when Mr. Diaz himself has been there (at least I'm assuming his name is actually Mr. Diaz). When my plate of Oxtails was brought to the table, he saw me trying to use my fork, and said, "don't be shy pick them right up and eat them with your hands!" I did, and I will again. Would also like to add that Mrs.Drew said the Arroz Amarillo & Gandules was the best she'd ever had, that was at least until Mr. Diaz sent out a small plate of what he called his favorite, Black Beans & Rice. I honestly can't wait to return and try one of the stews or another daily special.

Where can I find an amazing tuna fish sandwich?

GASP!!!! How can you mention European Provisions and not even mention pork!!!! I'm kidding of course, but when I go to European Provisions, my sandwich of choice is the Goose Liverwurst on their wonderful Rye, you are right about the bread. Next trip, I will definately try the tuna - after the liverwurst!

Where can I find an amazing tuna fish sandwich?

D'jeet sounds like a great idea, I love that place, if time allows I'll go today and try the tuna, if available. BTW I agree with your description of Mike's Tuna, but I have to add that they do go through quite a bit of it, so I'm not sure if that's is why the flavor is so intense, I still think that there is an ingredient added, that is hidden by the consistancy.

Where can I find an amazing tuna fish sandwich?

jrd303, I was going to second your rec for Mike's Subs in Keyport on another thread, but this looks like a good spot for that. I know you asked about a Tuna Fish sandwich, but would a Tuna Sub do? I love the Tuna Sub at Mike's. I don't know exactly what is in it, as the tuna salad is really smooth, (I imagine that some type of machine is involved in the mixing) but it is the only place I go for tuna. The flavor is totally different than any I've had anywhere. I get it with everything on it as well, (lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, vinegar & hot peppers)

DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies ~ Jersey

Tom246, I'm wondering about the Clam Pizza, does it have tomato on it? I'm assuming so as it's DeLornzo's Tomato Pies, but I have only seen Clam Pizza as a white pie. Also you wouldn't happen to know if there is a wait for a table on a Tuesday would you? :-) and have a great trip!

Fried Chicken in Middletown

Val, your description of the 'chicken snacks' on Bando's menu intrigued me, and the fact that one of my crew brought Bando leftovers in hooked me! I went today to try the chicken snacks, didn't see them on the menu, however the waiter told me it was Salt & Pepper Chicken (he said 'like KFC'). I've had Salt & Peper chicken before, but it has always been cubes of white meat. As Val wrote they are spicy, chewy, sinewy - mine even had small bones in them. That came as quite a suprise after the first couple didn't! The dish also included my favorite part of the chicken, the oyster. So it was all dark meat, as well as battered and crispy fried pieces of chicken skin, and small leg or thigh ends with some meat still attached - the dish ws GREAT!!! Not to get to far off topic, but they told me they also do Salt & Pepper Squid, whick is a favorite of mine at West Lake.
