Astoria Broadway Mexican notes
i LOVE the chorizo at the taco truck. but again, i am their biggest fan and i will happily gobble up anything they make! the grocery- would it original mexican? they are really good too- and i second their great tamales. i scanned in their menu too for easy access from anywhere!

Putting together a date in Astoria
Cafe Triskell on 36th Ave and 33rd St is sooo sweet. Aces is also across the street. and if you take the walk over to 31st Ave, pick up a bottle of wine and hit Il Bambino on 31st & 35th ish St.
Go Wasabi 30th Ave CLOSED!
they are open again. can't say its a great thing since i think there are better places to go for your sushi fix- JJ's, Bai, Kumo, Watawa...
Good beer selection (store) in Astoria?
i second Heliopolis. i found them to have a super eclectic combination
Speck in Astoria or Manhattan
thanks so much quentinC! i haven't been trecking out in the cold for fear of not finding it. now that you have a definite on Tony and Dave's i'll have to check it out.
Speck in Astoria or Manhattan
i haven't been to any of the above so i might have to treck out to each and give it a go. there's a salumeria on 30th Ave in Astoria that i can't remember the name of, do you think they might have it? what about the place under the N train off Ditmars?
Speck in Astoria or Manhattan
I had a taste of some speck on crostini (thanks to il bambino) and now i know what love is! i love this stuff. so my question, do you know of anywhere i can buy it as one would a deli meat? nicely thinly shaved by the pound? would prefer in astoria or the vicinity but manhattan will do too.
Best Panini - Astoria - Il Bambino
can't say enough good things about this place. what a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. went for dinner with friends weds night and will be back this weekend. i plan on going through the entire menu. the ingredients are so fresh and such clean flavors throughout. i took pics of our bounty! http://flickr.com/photos/flooznyc/369017903/
highly recommended
El Rey del Taco truck
i absolutely love the taco truck! and they deliver!!! tues through saturdays they are there usually from 7pm til 3-4 am. i don't know what it is, but i really do enjoy their food- and i've tried alot of mexican in Astoria
Cinema Paradiso - Astoria
i have absolutely nothing positive to say about my dinner experience there...
Pao de queijo in Astoria
they sell the frozen packages and the mix at the brazilian market on Steinway between 30th and 28th Aves. its the easiest thing to make and so nice fresh from the oven. they had them at Churrascaria Tropical so i would assume that Sabor Tropical has it as well but i could be wrong.
Le Petit Prince- New Bakery in Astoria
finally stopped in last night for a wee dessert. delicious. i got the banana mango passion fruit mousse. i also couldn't resist getting a chocolate croissant and a almond one to go for today's breakfast. the chocolate one was to die for. super flaky and just the right amount of chocolate in 2 thin snakes down each side of the center. the almond one was sooo moist and flavorful too! its a little bit of a walk for me, but i think its so worth it, and i can walk off the extra calories on the way back ;)
(and i asked their hours and if i remember correctly the woman said 7:30am-9:30pm)
Favela in Astoria?
had to try this place out since i too have been looking for delish brazilian food. it was very very very good. the staff was lovely and the food was perfectly done. i had the picanha which is my fav cut of meat, it came with black beans and rice and farofa which i love. The portion was huge ($15-def worth it) and would have fed 2 people if they weren't as starved as i was! they don't have a liquor license yet for hard alcohol so a brahma went along just fine with dinner. i would highly recommend a visit.
here's a pic of my picanha in case you wanted to check it out...i love photographing my food!

Great meal Kabab Cafe... and he's looking for a new cook.
wow, it'll be hard but im sure Ali will pull through. I've got to think positive about it because for me there's no other option! We can't lose him. I'm glad that Luis will be doing well though, he's a good egg. And now to go pay that man a visit and try out the new grub!
kebab cafe problem
aaahhhh, i saw you guys there! couldn't help it when Ali brought out that fish. So glad you liked it. My boyfriend got a steak (thats all he ever eats)with potatoes and veggies and i got the lemon sole with rice and veggies. 2 beers and a coke with some yummy honey drenched dessert and it was $50. I paid happily and will be back again and again.
Churrascaria Tropical - closed?
Yes, i heard they would be closing and it would open up as a new "bar". The same owners own Sabor Tropical and i think they are just consolidating kinda. Pretty sure they sold it, so now you've got to hit Sabor if you want the yummy grilled cuts.
Best Japanese in Astoria?
Go Wasabi, might be good for vietnamese but i haven't tried. When i did try them though i didn't like their sushi. I like Watawa alot and recently i've been getting takeout from Kumo on Ditmars and 38th and can't really complain. Are they the best, no not really, but for a sushi fix when i don't feel like heading downtown, Watawa or Kumo will do.
-Will be trying Ginza soon though, thanks for the positive on it.
kebab cafe problem
When my boyfriend and i go there (2 times a month at least) we always get whatever he wants to cook and a steak. sometimes with an app. and some wine and it will be around $40-$50.I don't think it is a crazy amount for what we are getting. You have to remember-its not a huge place so he doesn't get anything with huge discounts or in bulk so things may be a bit more expensive. I do feel like everything is made with love though and thats priceless. I don't think there is anything wrong with asking the prices on stuff at all. And from what i've heard and experienced myself, he will be the first one to say- "you don't have enough? how much do you have, its ok, you like the food you pay what you can." That means alot to me personally, so in a time of need like this after the blackout- i feel like i need to go there and show my support no matter how small my meal may be. I would be crushed if he closed. go and spend $10 on the veggie platter or go and spend $50 on a feast, just go and enjoy the meal and the experience of one of Astoria's gems. (i'm not loaded by any means, i just choose to spend my money where i feel it is deserved and i get satisfaction from it too)
eat happily foodies!
Bohemian Beer Hall - What to Eat?
Before a group of friends decided we would go there for a "dinner", i had also never thought of the Beer Garden as much of a meal type of place. The kielbasa was always enough for me, but it was actually pretty decent. I took pics and talk about everyone's dish on my blog though, so feel free to judge for yourself http://gudstufnyc.blogspot.com/2006/03/astoria-eats-hits-beer-garden.html
Chilean sandwiches
i love San Antonio #2! their chilean hot dogs are awesome. they do have a few sandwiches that rock, i had the lomito and with some of their pebre that they have on the tables for eating in and it was really really good. you should def eat there so that its still toasty and melty... might need to go pay them a visit tonight on my way home!
also- tried their seafood empanada. different from most of the empanadas i've had for sure, but i had never had one chilean style before. spicy filling in a crunchy baked shell, wouldn't say no to having it again.
36-20 Astoria Blvd. (corner of 37th St)
Farewell dinner for friend/colleague in Astoria
just went to Agnanti last night for the second time, and it really really really is good stuff!
we were a party of 6 and it was around 9:30 and easilt got a table. the last time i went there we were probably 10-14 (people kept coming and going) and we fit fine.they were very sweet and helpful. that was on a saturday afternoon though so it may have been a little easier to accomodate us? don't know. when i asked if the lot of us could have outside seating they said thats too many people, so if you are more then 6 its safe to say that you'll be inside- not a bad thing at all- just a head up!
"Stove" in Astoria
anyone have any newer info on this place? i'd like to check it out since Ali mentioned it to me too!
Butcher Bros?
i got the filet mignon there and i can't complain. got it medium rare and it was nice and flavorful. my boyfriend got another cut and didn't like it at all, fatty and flavorless so i think it might be a toss up. only went the one time so thats all i can say about it.
