Is it insulting to the chef to special order in fine dining?

That is the best description ever!!! Especially in an establishment that has many choices, if you don't think you will like a dish the way it is prepared, order something else!
Restaurant Nicholas Disappoints and Under-Delivers
We only tried Nicholas once, and like you were let down. The suckling pig was dry, nothing really shined, for the money we left rather disappointed, I never posted on our experience for fear of the chow gods. I am somewhat reieved that I am not the only one that was not Wowed. I must say our service was excellent.

Tardi's? Really? I have eaten here at least a dozen times because I can walk there, but that is the best I can say about it. Plus, that would be northern Ocean county.
Raising a non-picky eater
I don't think that Ian is out of the ordinary. I fully agree that if you are raised on chicken fingers and mac and cheese that is all you will like. My kids are 11 and 14 and will eat anything at least once, however, they have always been expected to try new things, and are presented with a wide variety of food choices. We like to dine out as a family and skip the kids menu. They eat duck, oysters, all veggies.
:) Crab Cakes Anyone?
I have only tried Brandl crabcakes once and they were old and fishy, not something I would hold up as a "high standard." I do love the crabcakes at Daniel's Bistro, no filler, colossal crabmeat. Yummy, not deep fried either!

Eats on the way home from Island Beach State Park
The place you saw was Picses Fish Market and Restaurant and I am a huge fan! Their stuff is always fresh, you can get fish and chips or more upscale fare.
what are the best farmers markets and roadside stands in NJ??
Down by the beach we use Big Ed's Produce in Lavallette, great Jersey corn and tomatoes, Any stand along the side of the road in Cape May for amazing berries.
Buying local seafood and produce near Sea Isle City
Just bite the bullet and drive into Cape May if you want really fresh. Black Sea bass is great right now as is the fluke. Make sure you pick up some berries while you are at any of the little produce stands, for some reason they are always the best down in that area, like little pops of candy!

Also relatively quick if you get there early enough would be the Lobster House, I think that is the right name, it is the huge place to the left when you gop over the bridge into Cape May.

Peanut Butter -- how do you eat it (and on what kinds of different foods)?
peanut butter soup, mmm...mmmm good! Start with a good chicken stock, whisk in peanut butter and finish with heavy cream. Totally outstanding!

Toss them with a bit of pecorino romano after the garlic and balsamic, you will think you have died and gone to heaven!
