Your Favorite Bakery that Doesn't Charge Tax

Well, I was on the receiving end of some very bad customer service (both people behind the counter skipped over me in line to those behind me) and after waiting for a few minutes they copped an attitude when they asked me "if I was waiting for something" and while ringing up my meager (one pain au chocolat) purchase. Totally soured me on going back. Don't get me started on the acoustics of the place either...

Your Favorite Bakery that Doesn't Charge Tax

Weird, the first (and only time) I went there, they charged me tax. (this was around three weeks ago)

Sandwiches at Bouchon Bakery in Beverly Hills?

I went last week. No sandwiches, just baked goods, nuts, and candy.

Watercress in Sherman Oaks

Crap (but not terribly surprised actually) - bought a groupon certificate for them a little while ago.

Lunch near CSUN

Pita Pockets is very good, concur about the laffa (their hummus and falafel are good too )

Falafel Palace (next door to Get Shaved! Hawaiian Ice) is also a good option, good falafel and eggplant.

Another option might be Emle's (http://www.emlesrestaurant.com) - cafe-style restaurant with American and Middle Eastern cuisine (per website)

Lazy Dog Cafe in Valencia?

I went recently. I had the portobello wrap and fries (I'm mostly vegan at the moment) and it was good. Not bad for a "chainy" place. I thought the alcoholic selections were actually reasonably priced. (then again, I go to a lot of places that serve "artisan" cocktails, so...)

Be warned, there may be a long wait because it's new and when I was there they said they weren't taking reservations yet (granted, we went the Sunday before Christmas, but still - we had to wait for almost an hour)

L.A Food Truck Phenomenon: Any Recs?

Besides Kogi, India Jones is pretty good food and price-wise. Border Grill's is good as well, but a bit on the high side - though, I think it's worth it every once in awhile.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I would avoid the Green Truck - while organic is good, it's too expensive for what it is and they seem to have a bad habit of overcharging people.

Leda's cupcakes -- going... going... Oct 18th

I just drove by the storefront today, and there's a huge "for lease" sign up - so yeah, safe to say the shop itself is history.

With the website being down (couldn't even access with google cache?) it sounds like the whole business is kaput . Sucks, really liked the vegan velvet cupcakes, even if they were on the pricey side...

What's the big deal with the KOGI TRUCK? Long lines, but is it worth it?

Line wait varies by time/location. Last time I went was a week ago when they were near Sepulveda and Roscoe in the afternoon - around 12:30, less than 10 people in line.

I personally wouldn't wait a long time unless they were a very short distance or one happens to be in the area - they make a regular stop about 3 miles from my house, and that's the only time I may go and get in line early.

Is It Alright To Ask For Substitutions on the Kogi Truck?

If they can do substitutions for vegans (tofu burrito), then they should be able to accommodate your request.

Intelligentsia Venice now open

I went here last week because I was excited at the prospect of having a slightly more convenient Intelligentsia location (I go to Santa Monica every week, and Silverlake less often) Don't like the layout at all, at one point there were 3 different queues going on. After waiting for several minutes at the front of one and feeling like I was being ignored, I gave up and left, very odd.

At first glance, I thought the food offerings seemed better than those served at the Silverlake location, but I don't know, they don't seem to really "match up" with the place (a.k.a. not the kind of stuff I want if I'm just grabbing a cup of coffee or tea) Just my opinion.

Same thing with the Tarzana location - never had a really good coffee drink of any sort there. Always been better at the Studio City and Montana Ave. stores...

Kogi - Good food, but is it worth the wait? [pics]

I've wanted to try Kogi for awhile, but the timing has never worked out right. (seriously guys - can't even come to at least Studio City or Sherman Oaks once in a while?)

Thought I finally had my opportunity at SMC last Thursday. They were supposed to be there from 3-6, I gave up after waiting a half hour. (had to drive back to Northridge - yes, in that traffic) Later saw on Twitter that they arrived at 4 (?) I suppose it's my own fault for not owning a web-enabled phone/handheld yet, but still - this is beginning to sound really ridiculous.

Square One- Short Review

I think in 2006 (?) the fruit bowl and muffin was $6.75 (and was part of the L.A. Times food section "deals" for that year)

Now it's up to $9.00. I know food prices have risen and all, but this is ridiculous!

Sign O' the times...

No. The independent places need our business more than ever. (plus, at least in my area, there are plenty of great indie alternatives)

Well, I still go to Le Pain Quotidien (because it's good, but pricey) and sometimes Chipolte.

Also, out of your specified range, Real Food Daily (vegan) - both Santa Monica and West Hollywood.

Sorry, only place I can think of.

HELP HOUNDS!!!! CHINESE IN THE VALLEY????

Yup, just went there two weeks ago.

However, being that it's in Granada Hills, it's probably considered a bit out of the way from Studio City (this coming from someone who lives nearby)

Plus, it's vegan, and the O.P. and parents are meat-eaters (everyone I know is a meat eater, and most of them act like they can't live without it, lol)

Le Pain Quotidien - Anything good (besides pastries)?

Gazpacho is really good. (all the soups are good in general)
Ricotta and Fig Tartine is good.
Black Bean Hummus tartine is good (but may be too spicy for some)
Pastry-Of-The-Month is usually a good bet (just got the Fig & Banana muffin today, yum)
They have this lemony sort of dressing on the salads that's really good too.

In one area I think they are lacking is drinks - the only thing I've gotten there I've really liked was the lemonade (which is pretty tart fyi)

Yeah, it's pricey - however, as others have said organic ingredients aren't terribly cheap, so... though, I can't usually finish the tartines in one sitting.

CUPCAKES GALORE!

As long as we are discussing cupcakes in the immediate area...

Like I said in my other post in this thread, Vanilla is so-so, not worth the price/calories. Interestingly enough, in a review elsewhere, someone claimed that when they bought a cupcake there, upon eating it they discovered it was frozen inside! Eww...

I tried a couple of cupcakes from Yummy, and while I think some of the flavors/concept is interesting, they are way too sugary, and the cake seems to be somewhat dry.

I'll probably kick myself for mentioning this since they seem to be pretty popular already, but I had the most AMAZING raspberry-chocolate cupcake last week at Real Food Daily. It was practically perfect - proper size, very moist cake, right amount of frosting, not very sweet, clean flavors...sooo good. Much better than most non-vegan counterparts I've had.

Only cons though is that they seem to go pretty fast during the day, they only have one flavor at a time, and they don't transport well (I was trying to bring one from Santa Monica to Porter Ranch, and the frosting started to melt, so I had to eat it in the car. oh well, still great anyway)
