Birdtown Cafe in Robbinsdale

My parents and I just tried the new Birdtown Cafe at 4135 West Broadway in downtown Robbinsdale. The place looks terrific... if you like historical content. Clean and inviting. Lots of pictures of Robbinsdale from 50 or more years ago.

I thought that the prices were fair.

I ordered a Turkey Melt that comes with fries, $7.49, and a Coke, $2.25. The turkey was processed, but tasted okay.

Mom had the West Broadway Burger with cheese, bacon, barbeque sauce, lettuce and tomato, and fries, $8.99, and the House Coffee, $2.00. She said it was good coffee.

Dad had the California Burger with fries, $8.99, and a lemonade, $2.25. He said it was very good lemonade.

We all thought our food was good... when it finally got to our table!.

We arrived at about 12:50. The restaurant was about 3/4 full. We were greeted and asked to take a seat anywhere. We chose a table by the front windows. We had a view of most of the restaurant. The youngest waitress gve us menus right away, and took our drink orders, which she promptly filled. She then told us that our waitress would be right with us. We sat for over ten minutes without being approached. Mother raised her hand to get somebody's attention. She had it in the air for over a minute when, much to our surprise, a young girl of about ten years came over from the counter where she had been sitting, and asked us what she could do for us. What a sweetheart! We told her that we hadn't ordered yet, and she grabbed a slip of paper and asked us what we wanted. Just then, an older waitress jumped in and took our order. She told us the little girl was the owner's daughter. The younger waitress refilled my Coke.

And then we sat for half an hour. People who came in after us were served. The cook came out and went to the tables of people who had food. None of the waitstaff seemed to notice our plight.

Then our plates finally arrived. We agreed the the sandwiches and fries were very good. There were no napkins or flatware on the table. It took almost five minutes to get the older waitress' attention, and then she brought a stack of napkins, two forks and four knives, of which she gave me two. Then she got another refill on my drink, and I was charged for two Cokes on the tab. The little girl cleared each plate as we finished. She also retrieved a box for Mom's leftover sandwich and fries.

I was disappointed to find the extra Coke on my tab. Mom tipped the little girl a dollar, and I tipped her two. I asked her if she could be our waitress next time, because she was the best.

I was into another business in downtown Robbinsdale the next day, and I asked if they had tried the new cafe. They had, and after I recounted my story, they said that they had had much the same experience. They needed to get served and get back to work.

All in all, very good food... but slow and careless service.
