Carême 350 - Anyone been?
What are the prices like? I've read about their $3.50 3-course meal special, but haven't seen much about their regular prices. I don't believe the $3.50 deal is available anymore. I'm thinking about going for lunch.
Leaf or Sheet Gelatin
Apologies in advance if this is common knowledge, but where would one go to buy gelatin sheets? I'm just assuming Safeway doesn't sell them. I live in Redwood City and work in SF, so anywhere in or between those areas would be okay. I need them ASAP, so online shopping isn't an option. Thanks!
Lunch: SOMA-ish
Howdy Chowhounders:
I just need a solid lunch place halfway between my office and my friend's office.
Me: 5th and Market
Him: 2nd and Howard
This isn't a fancy business lunch, just a casual get together. A full bar is a plus.
Thanks in advance!
Dinner Recs for Tenderloinish/Downtown area
I work downtown at 5th & Market and my friend works up closer to Van Ness. Can someone recommend a restaurant close to one of us or in between that is somewhat hip and not too expensive (about $25 pp?) I was thinking Farmer Brown's, but I've been there a few times already and wasn't horribly impressed. But something with the same sort of atmosphere and off a convenient bus line would be great.
Rich Chocolate Cake in the Peninsula
My sister wants a decadent chocolate cake for her birthday this Sunday. We've had the Chocolate Chocolate Cake at the Prolific Oven, which is good; but she wants something even richer than that, if possible. Something more like a devil's food cake. Any ideas for a good bakery in the Peninsula? Do the Cakery or Copenhagen do a good chocolate cake? Many thanks.
Where can you get some lemon meringue pie in this town?
Whole Foods might make one...the San Mateo WF makes mini lemon meringue tarts that are good, but I think you have to pre-order a normal sized pie. Availability varies from store to store though.
Lactose Intolerant? Here's help
Trader Joe's also carries a Lactase & Rennin supplement in capsule form. My sister swears by it.
Best Dim Sum In SF
I went to Parc Hong Kong maybe 6 months ago for the first and LAST time. I thought everything was unbelievably greasy. The dumpling skins and rice noodles were poorly made and falling apart before we could get them into our mouths. The shrimp in the har gow was piece-mealy and not deveined properly so they had that ooky gritty feel to them.
Another thing that turned me off was when we noticed a child knock over the toothpick dispenser at the maître d' booth. The maître d' cheerfully picked all the toothpicks off the floor and put them back into the dispenser! Horrifying!
cupcake feedback
I agree with sugarbuzz, Miette's cupcakes are pretty, but fall short in the flavor department.
Chow 'Round CineArts in West Portal?
I like El Toreodor. It's a fun little Mexican place. If you are prone to sensory overload, beware. It's like a giant pinata exploded inside. Also the wait can be long on Friday and Saturday nights, so be prepared to wait outside or at the bar next door for up to an hour. Not good for large parties though. I think their tables can accomodate 6 max.
Fried Chicken in San Francisco
We just went to Farmer Brown's in the Tenderloin on Saturday night and all ordered the fried chicken dinner. It's an organic, modern take on traditional soul food. The chicken was good, not too oily, but the breading could have used a tad more flavor in my opinion. Also I wish they would let you choose between white and dark meat. (I vastly prefer dark) However, the chicken meat itself was very good and the serving size is generous, with 3 pieces of chicken. It comes with a side of mac n cheese, which was good, but not the best I've ever had. The flavor was just right, nice and sharp and made with Tillamook cheddar, but I would've liked the consistancy to be a tad thicker and not as saucy. The southern-inspired cocktails were refreshing and reasonably priced. Even the water was special, it comes with a sprig of mint and lime wedges. The owner (same owner as Bluejay) and staff were attentive and gracious. Worth checking out.
