"Cooking" with a toddler?

My oldest, who is now 9 going on 19, started "helping" at that age. To this day our favorite project is baking cookies! She started out stirring and pouring measured ingredients into the bowls. My other children now like to help too. Last weekend they made cookies just about by themselves! I would say for a toddler that age, you're on the right track. Be creative, let them try to crack eggs, or measure ingredients, turn on the light in the oven so they can watch things cook. And don't forget that the cleanup is part of the cooking, most toddlers love to get their hands wet in sudsy dishwater.

Granulated Maple Sugar - anyone used it?

I was at a local festival today and while replenishing my supply of pure syrup and maple cream I found granulated maple sugar among the sweets on the counter. I was intrigued! Of all the years I'd spent in upstate NY I couldn't believe I'd never seen the stuff. Anyone heard of this? I heard you can substitute it for cane sugar, just divide in half, but I could see this not working well with things like cookies where the amount and type of sugar affects both the texture and taste of the final result. I could see it possibly working in a combination with granulated or brown sugar though.

Nonetheless I am fascinated now with this new discovery and am determined to find some great recipes for this stuff. Anyone heard of it or tried it?
