Food Recommendations Wanted!

So let's see if I understand you correctly. You ask "if any SF people could give me some good food recommendations," explaining that you are in search of "good places to go with a family of 4 that aren't too expensive or exotic." You don't give us any idea of what might qualify as "good food," you don't explain what you mean by "too expensive or exotic," you don't tell us where you're staying, and you don't provide us with any idea of the types of food that interest you. Then, two posters cheerfully provide some ideas for how you might help us help you, and another one chimes in with a specific recommendation (the Ferry Building), as well as with a suggestion that you tell us what you mean by "expensive" and "exotic," and you respond that they are "rude." Really? People try to help you navigate Chowhound -- suggesting ways that you can help us help you -- and your response is, forget it, I won't use this site? Really?

As a friend of mine once said, good luck to you.

Gaspar vs. Aquitaine? [San Francisco]

Of the two, I have only dined at Gaspar. The food was decent, service pretty good and the evening fine.

I've been to Aquitaine a number of times to buy wine and the one thing I'll note, which may be relevant, is that it appears much less comfortable/more informal, in terms of seating/tables than Gaspar. The menu looks great and the wine selection is very nice, though, so if those are the only criteria, then . . . .

Uno Dos Tacos (SoMa) [San Francisco]

I tried a carnitas burrito last week and was not terribly impressed. Of course, the fact that it and a soda cost somewhere between $10 and $11 raised my expectations (well, frankly, annoyed me, especially when I discovered it came without chips). It seemed as though something -- oil? -- had seeped through it because the exterior of the tortilla was very wet. It was odd, because the filling was rather dry and bland. Certainly no better than other FiDi purveyors of similar offerings and definitely not worth the price.

A colleague says, though, that the tacos are good.

Cafe Rouge - sausage making class [Berkeley]

$100 to learn how to cut up a chicken? Wow, the Bay Area has officially gone 'round the bend.

Restaurant reception venue for 50-75 guests under 12k?

When we were looking for a place, we used OpenTable to search for places that could accommodate our group -- it has a "private event" tab that you can use to search. Was a good place to get a list of possible venues.

Restaurant reception venue for 50-75 guests under 12k?

We just did this at Local Kitchen. About 60 people on a Saturday night. No dancing but otherwise fit your requirements.

Whole Foods 2001 Market St at Dolores, SF opens Wed 11/6/13 - Glaze Baum Cake; Naia Gelato Sandwiches

I could be mistaken about the brand, but I think they've been selling those gelato sandwiches at the WF on Ocean Avenue. I've only had the key lime graham cracker ones. Pretty good.

Buying abalone direct from divers

There's an article in today's New York Times about one-day abalone diving courses near Salt Point: http://travel.nytimes.com/2013/10/13/...

Special occasion restaurant in Richmond or Sunset for tomorrow night? [San Francisco]

Second the recommendation for Chapeau!, but it will be hard to get a table. Also recommend The Richmond, at 615 Balboa.

Champa Garden SF Branch to open soon -- any favorites?

Had a late-ish dinner there last night. So glad to have this down the street from my house. My only complaint is the pacing and order in which they bring out food -- entrees preceeded starters, and then came out while we were still working on the starters. As we used to say, "what's up with that?"

But most of the food was great. Larp (chicken) was a huge portion, very bright flavors. Spicy eggplant (with beef) and pumpkin curry (chicken) were perfectly sized portions, with fresh, well-cooked vegetables and a decent amount of protein. My son's "medium" bowl of "chicken noodle" soup was about the size of a wading pool. Leftovers for at least two. Only disappointment was the fried calamari, although the green sauce that accompanied it was good -- seemed to have either some mustard or horseradish in it. All this (plus one bowl of rice) for $55, including tip.

The space is nice, although the tables are small and quickly become crowded with plates, as noted previously. Service was very solicitous. All in all, a great addition to the neighborhood.

Boulevard [San Francisco]

We went on Tuesday, and, other than not bringing everyone's food to the table at the same time (i.e., half the plates came out, the others followed 30 seconds later), it was every bit as good as it's ever been. Portion sizes, which used to be too large, are now just about right.

I tried a bite of the sweetbreads/raviolini appetizer, which was amazing. Very pure flavors. Only complaint I had about the white asparagus appetizer that there was just one stalk, albeit large. Grilled swordfish with smoked potatoes was fantastic, perfectly cooked fish. Of course, having a table at the Embarcadero-side window didn't hurt, either.

Padrecito, SF

We were looking forward to trying it this coming Sunday, but for reasons that still remain unclear, they called a couple of dayt ago and told us they were cancelling our reservation. Absent some good explanation, I'm not inclined to spend my money there.

Copita Tequileria. Anyone tried it? [Sausalito]

We happened to be in Sausalito a few months ago and popped in for late lunch on a Saturday. Food was tasty and service was fine. I put it in the same category as Tacolicious. I wouldn't necessarily make a special trip, but would definitely eat there again if I was in the neighborhood.

L'Olivier [San Francisco]

FWIW, I went a couple of times, ten to twelve years ago. I wasn't thrilled about going then and saw no reason to return. About the nicest thing I could say was that the table we're well-spaced.

Tony's Pizza - the St. Louis Style [San Francisco]

I lived in St. Louis for a couple of years in the mid-90s. Your report reminded me of the mediocre, but cheap, pizza buffet I'd occasionally frequent at Maurizio's. I could never understand provel. I guess it's because I didn't grow up eating it.

Help me WOW my English partner with amazing SF food...

Cotogna takes reservations; call one month to the day before you want to dine. My wife and I ate there last weekend for our anniversary and had a nice meal, although the food was very rich (and I don't usually complain about that). If you want a really nice meal, Quince, next door, is even better, and the service is much better. More expensive, of course.

Foodie from Chicago needs to know what SFO Neighborhood to live in.

One of the areas "near City College off Monterey Bvld." is the neighborhood I live in, Westwood Park (between Monterey & Ocean, bisected by Miramar). Wonderful little neighborhood with detached homes and some small green spaces (although I wouldn't call them parks). Only downside is that there are not a lot of places to walk to for something to eat. But there is a Whole Foods opening in spring 2012 on Ocean just east of Plymouth!
