What are you baking these days? August 2012 [old]

If you are in (or passing through) San Francisco I have seen them (frozen) in our local Russian market.

Tried and True Cook's Country Recipes

I have made their chocolate pound cake a couple of times now. Tastes great and lasts for days. I top it with strawberries and whipped cream for a variation of strawberry shortcake.

What Foods Do You Forego in the Name o' Domestic Tranquility?

Another here who eats much less salmon than she would like. Husband worked in Alaska in a salmon processing plant for several months years ago and either this put him off salmon or he overdosed on it; I have never been quite sure which.

Anchovies.

Fruits and nuts in salads. Actually, I still use these at times. Since we both do the cooking, whoever is making the salad gets to put in what he or she likes, and the other eats it or eats around it, depending on how disliked the ingredient is!

Quick San Tung Report [San Francisco]

We tried San Tung (as take-out) for the first time about 2 weeks ago. We had a meal similar to yours.

I really liked the dry fried chicken; the pieces were very meaty and had a good balance of crispy, sweet and hot.

I agree exactly with your description of the dry fried string beans, and enjoyed them, too.

The black bean sauce noodles were not my favorite. They tasted primarily salty to me without much other flavor. However, my husband liked them much more than I did. It was nice that they packaged the sauce separately from the noodles for take-out. I actually liked the sauce more over some rice the next day.

Potstickers were fine; similar to what I have had in other restaurants.

A couple of the dishes (I do not remember which ones) were not warm at all when we got them home (about 5 minutes).

Bottom line: we will definitely get take-out there again. I probably would not wait in line to eat there unless I was with people who really wanted to go.

How to make a THICK Thai peanut sauce?

I made both this peanut sauce and satay tonight , and they were great!

The peanut sauce had the perfect amount of heat for me. I made it as written, except I added a small amount of sesame oil. I put it all in the blender to smooth out the consistency.

We used skirt steak for the satay and cooked the skewers on the grill. Yum!

Thanks for the rec., Relish!

What are you baking these days? April 2012 [old]

Well, I did use full-fat yogurt because I had bought it by mistake and wanted to use it up. So I cannot say for sure how it would be with non-fat yogurt. Most of what I read suggested it would be fine; maybe a little drier.

Honestly, it took longer to preheat the oven than it did to put together this cake, so I would give it a try. Not too much lost if it is not to your liking.

I used Orangette's recipe, minus the lemon zest and glaze, and added raspberries.

I made a French yogurt cake with raspberries. This was so simple and quick to make, I was not sure how good it would be. But it was very satisfying! I can see endless variations of this cake in my future!

Lemon-blueberry scones.

I wanted to make blueberry pancakes for breakfast, but did not have enough milk. I did, however have cream... hence the scones.

Greek kasseri Cheese

My moussaka recipe uses kasseri cheese in the bechamel sauce that goes on top of the meat and eggplant layers.

So, I made the SK recipe (because I had everything on hand and did not have PB chips for the other recipe). Everyone, including me, enjoyed them!

I did end up overbaking them a little. My oven ALWAYS seems to need the longer baking time specified by a recipe, but these were already slightly overdone when I first checked them. They still disappeared in a flash, and tasted great. I used bittersweet Ghirardelli chocolate chips for the ganache. Yum!

Thanks again!

Help This BC Hound fine-tune his SF culinary escapade

I just realized today, Monday, that the De Young is closed on Mondays. All the other sights in that area of the park appeared to be open, but you might want to check.

The restaurants in the area, including Yummy Yummy, were mostly open, except for some of the sushi-only places.

Thank you! Choices are always good. I, too, will take these to work. No impending labor unrest, but we have been awfully busy lately and morale could use a peanut butter-chocolate infusion!

Could you share a recipe, please? I was planning to bake something peanut butter + chocolate in the next couple of days and bars sound better (and easier) than the cookies I was considering.

Which Kitchen Tiles to go with my Soapstone Countertop?

I think the sage green tile would look lovely with the soapstone. The Talavera, in my opinion, would not "go" as well with soapstone unless maybe as accent tiles with the rest solid field tile. My last kitchen had soapstone counters and I loved that they were more of the visual focal point. I looked at your soapstone online, and it will have more going on than just being charcoal grey/black (in a very good way!). I would also, as someone said below, choose one tile for the backsplash and pony wall counter. You could then work in accent or liner tile. Or maybe do the green for the backsplash and beige/cream (similar to your floor tiles) for the pony wall counter.

I know it is not baking, but the other way leftover egg whites get used around here is in pisco sours. But that is usually the same day. And only a couple. Or a few...

I want to try the friands next!

Having tried several of the Vietnamese restaurants in that area, we keep coming back to Yummy Yummy. Their (cold) spring rolls with pork are very good. The other nice thing about choosing it as your destination from Golden Gate Park, is that you pass a number of other restaurants on the way in case you find yourself in the mood for something else. Hotei, at Irving and 9th has good ramen and sushi, and Manna at Irving and 10th is Korean.

Grocery Shopping in San Francisco

Yes, interesting question. I looked back over a few months of card statements out of curiosity, and I would say 400-450 a month for two of us. However, I do not shop at most of the places you mentioned, except the small produce markets, which are wonderful. You can absolutely save on produce and bulk goods (grains, beans, etc.) But the meats you are talking about are going to cost you! I would add the Sunset as a good neighborhood for food shopping.

Comfort Food Mac & Cheese Recipe

This is the one I make, too. However, I make only half the sauce, with all the topping and the full 1 lb. of pasta. The first time I made it, it was to "saucy" for me. I can also buy less, but better, cheese this way!

Hi, new poster (but long-time reader). I had left-over egg white to use up, so I made flourless chocolate walnut cookies. I added some bittersweet chocolate chips which I would not do again; they did not cook as nicely as when I have left them out. They also had to cook longer than the recipe specifies (though that could be because I made them full-sized this time).
