Balaboosta Last night

I worked up in Rochester NY for a few years. People were always taking about this dish called Chicken French. How great it was and how only one place served it. I made my way over there to find out they were serving Chicken Francese but calling it Chicken French to not scare away the customers.

The apps and small plates were excellent; roasted cauliflower, fried olives (bit salty), bruschetta.
The Israeli street food was outstanding. Delicious chicken and sausage in a fluffy pita with all the toppings.
Entrees fell off a bit, hangar steak was flavorful but very tough, branzino was bland, Octopus was just OK, little grainy.
Also there was no AC and the place was like a sauna. Everyone was using menus to fan themselves.
Decent enough but not a destination place.

Smorgasburg - any recos? Heading over this weekend

Got there in the rain. Had the Goa Taco - it was great. Then was tired of getting poured on so waled a few blocks back towards the train and when into this fish shack and drank at the bar for a few hours. Ate there too but the food was not memorable.

Decent restaurants near Jacob Javitz?

Very tough hood. There is a bunch of carts outside the Javitz Center during events but you cant eat that more than once. The other booths may be a better bet.

Restaurant familiar to Bond St

Funny story, a friend of mine has been away for 15 years. Before he left his aboslute favorite place was Bond Street. Loved the food, atmosphere, music, wait staff......
The whole time away he is dreaming of going back there. He gets back and goes the 2nd night home. Calls me afterwards "what the hell happened? It was awful and so expensive?" I was actually shocked it is still open.

Healthy Lunch around Bellevue Hospital (27th and 1st)

Love the sandwiches at Todaro however, its always seems like an inconvenient for them to make it. Ive even been asked "have you checked in our sandwich cooler for a pre-made"

Healthy Lunch around Bellevue Hospital (27th and 1st)

can't beat the carts across from the hospital for $5 however may not qualify as healthy. Waterfront Alehouse has good salads.
The new Greek take out place EON on 2nd and 37 is outstanding and affordable.
28th and 3 there are 2 Thai places that could work.

Went to Gato last night

Really liked the interior space and the bar situated in the center. Good service at the bar as well. I liked the Jimmie.

Ordered;
Scrambled Eggs - Good and creative but likely wouldnt order again
Octopus - also good but no better that charred octopus in 50 other restaurants in NYC
Charred Beef - this was a big dissapointment. Even Med Rare the meat was tough. Liked the blue cheese topping but not an impressive piece of meat.
Roasted Cauliflower was excellent.

A fine meal but not a place I would return

Cocktail Party

I found a bunch of great places on Craigslist when looking do throuw a party for my wife. You do have to bring in all your own food, drinks, music.... but the spaces were affoardable and nice.

One meal WITHOUT our teens

Thats easy - get some burgers and pints of guinnes at Mollys and use the rest of the money to get a separate hotel room from your teens for the night.

Riverpark on East 29th St-Wonderful all the time

I have been there about 6 times. The food is good and service always attentive. I will say the food is somewhat generic, rarely evoking any "wow" or real creativity. Most dishes can be found on menus all over the city. They do tend to do them better than most.

New restaurant from the EMP team

I actually heard it was going to be on 12th adn first and a very intimate, romantic place called 121. You can only get a reservation on your anniversary or first date.

Returning to a "never again" restaurant (in my case EMP)

Exactly my point. The OP shouldnt feel his apearance impacted performance
"but upon seeing us and how young we were, walked away without speaking to us and sent wines much less expensive than we were prepared to select."

Burgers and Beers W. Village for Large Group?

I would say Burger and Barel for sure. Tavern on Jane has great bloody marys besides a solid burger

Returning to a "never again" restaurant (in my case EMP)

2 guys walk into EMP both with reservations. One is wearing a finely tailored suit and a Rolex, the other wearing baggy jeans, a hoodie and a baseball hat backwards. Do they get treated the same way? Should they? Now take the same 2 guys and send them to Dinosaur BBQ on Sat night at 8PM, same questions.
Just saying 1 off situations are hard to base a perspective on.

With so many top tier places in NYC why even risk it?

Buger Joint has great deserts too. Go with that option.
