HENRY'S END OFFERING $25 THREE COURSE PRIX FIXE MENU MONDAY THRU THURSDAY
This is exciting, although if I remember correctly, Tempo and Chestnut already had at least one or two nights they'd offer a prix-fix during the week.
New in South Slope - Roots, Hanco's, Athena
I walked past the Hanco's today - they're still doing construction!
I need my fresh mozzarella
Russo's on 7th (b/t 10th & 11th) also has good mozzarella, if you're tired of waiting.
Wedding reception in Brooklyn for 130 guests?
There's always the Grand Prospect Hall.
Need great Breakfast place PARK SLOPE
There's a diner on the corner of 7th and 12th. It used to be called Katina's, now it seems to be called "Purity" (no idea if it's connected to the Purity Diner further down 7th). Otherwise, there's Naidre's, which has wonderful food but very limited seating, and Windsor Cafe on Prospect Park West, which is a bit overpriced for what it is. Terrace Bagels is okay, I prefer Bagel Hole, and I didn't really enjoy my experience at Dizzy's. It was sort of like dining in a day care center. Food was okay, not great.
7th Avenue Donuts
I'm a big fan of the donuts from this place, but this post has convinced me to try their breakfasts one of these days.
Fette Sau to open in Williamsburg Fall 06
Had dinner at Fette Sau on Thursday night with a friend. While I thought that the pulled pork was only okay (it was not the worst I'd ever had, but it certainly wasn't the best, either), I fell instantly in love with the baby back ribs and the sausages. There are many other cuts to choose from, and sides. There was no mac n cheese, but there are terrific baked beans. I will try other sides on subsequent visits. Very, very, very few vegetarian options, if any: there were large, juicy chunks of pork in the beans. Nice selection of craft brews, and sauces to add on to the meats. Definitely worth a visit.
We headed up the street for dessert at Cheeks, which makes a very nice cupcake, if you're in the area.
what is worth going to in brooklyn & is also child friendly?
I agree 100%. The kid will be unhappy, and you will be unable to properly enjoy your food.
Best (Funniest? Wittiest?) Food Quotes
"I think Pringles initial intention was to make tennis balls. But on the day that the rubber was supposed to show up, a big truckload of potatoes arrived. But Pringles is a laid back company. They said "F*ck it. Cut em up."
"I saw a wino eating grapes, and I said dude - you've got to WAIT."
"If carrots got you drunk, rabbits would be f--ked up."
"I like vending machines, because snacks are better when they fall."
"Pickles are cucumbers that sold out."
That would be cool if you could eat a good food with a bad food and the good food would cover for the bad food when it got to your stomach. Like you could eat a carrot with an onion ring and they would travel down to your stomach, then they would get there, and the carrot would say, "It's cool, he's with me."
I have a cheese-shredder at home, which is its positive name. They don't call it by its negative name, which is sponge-ruiner. Because I wanted to clean it, and now I have little bits of sponge that would melt easily over tortilla chips...

fresh pasta in brooklyn
Don't forget to stop at Moretti's for rolls, Alliotta for dessert, and La Torre for everything else! Damn, what memories!
Russo's in the slope is a passable substitute, but nothing truly beats Pastosa.
New Thai in South Slope-not worth it
I ordered from Wantana a week or so ago out of curiosity and I was pleasantly surprised by their panang curry. While a little bit on the soupy side, it was spicy and flavorful, and I would order from them again in a heartbeat. But, that said, I've also enjoyed the meals I've had at Rice.
Beet is still my favorite, but they're a little pricey to order from on a regular basis. I stopped ordering from or eating at Thai Sky after I got sick of dealing with their pushy, rude owner.
the best hot chocolate in brooklyn
So far, the best hot chocolate I've had in the slope is at Cocoa Bar. I've also tried the stuff at the chocolate room, and while pretty good, Cocoa Bar is definitely my favorite (particularly the mint.)
Americanized Chinese food just like in the 1970s?
Mea Culpa to the mods for not staying specifically in the right borough, but my favorite old-school Chinese place is in Marine Park, Brooklyn on Flatbush avenue down by Kings Plaza, called China New Star. (I grew up in the neighborhood, my folks still live there). The list the OP gave was nearly identical to our order on Christmas Eve 2005, along with ribs (which are either sublime or serviceable, depending when you order them), and other assorted appetizers.
Otherwise, you might have some luck at Excellent Dumpling House on Lafayette, but only for some of the items, not all. And there's another place, across the street from the Vegetarian Dim Sum House (Moon something or other, sorry I don't remember more of the name, I discovered it during Feast of Chinatown last year) that looks like it's been there since the dawn of time that might also be able to get you what you need.
When you do find something, please report back! As much as I love properly done, Authentic Chinese food, nothing will ever replace NY-Style American Chinese in this Brooklyn girl's heart.
Food-Related Songs?
My favorite cut-the-cake moment from any wedding I attended was when my cousin and her husband played "When I'm 64" by the Beatles (Will you still need me? Will you still Feed me...)
Otherwise, I like "Ice Cream" by Sarah Mclachlan, and I love Gary Soup's idea.
Is it wrong for a grown man to crave crunchy cheetos? What junkfood do you crave?
Pringles - but only the lower sodium ones in the silver can. I don't know why, but these are what I love best, and I can go through an entire can in no tme at all. I especially crave these when I'm suffering from stomach upset. They work better to settle me than saltines.
(And Grandma Utz's Kettle Chips when I allow myself near them, which isn't often).
Anyone know of a good fondue place?
28 different fondues?! So much for my diet...thanks for the tip!
ISO of Instant Yeast in Park Slope
I would also try C-Town on 5th & 9th, and the Key Food on 5th and Garfield. Also, maybe hit up a bakery (Colson Patisserie, Delicies de Paris) and see if maybe they'll sell you what you need. Stranger things have happened!
Blown away at Bukhara
I honestly didn't pay attention to the sign outside of the name, the friend who invited me told me that it was "Indian food," and it seemed similar enough to me. The more important point, at least to me, is that it's GOOD food - flavorful, tasty, and worth a visit. (Also, my East 6th standard for Indian for many years was run by Pakistani Muslims - is it still Indian food then?)
Blown away at Bukhara
It's the Bukhara on CIA and Cortelyou with the big green awning.
Blown away at Bukhara
A Kensington-dwelling friend invited me to join her for dinner last night at Bukhara. I'd had Indian food the night before, but decided to join her anyhow, as I'd not tried this place yet.
My expectations were not high. Aside from a trip to Brick Lane while vacationing in England, most of my Indian food experience had come from East 6th street. Limited? Perhaps. As a lifelong Brooklyn resident, I never could face the trip out to Queens. Now I feel as though I don't have to.
We started off with chicken daal, rice, and chickpeas. The daal was spicy in the best possible way - it had as much flavor as it did heat, which was a pleasant surprise. The chicken was tender, a nice change from the rubber poultry that I've had in the past. The chickpeas were life changing. The server sprinkled fresh cilantro over them before bringing them to our table, which just added to the flavor explosion in my mouth. I plan to go back and try the black chickpeas as well as the white, even though it'll be difficult to ever pass these up again. They were sensational. The nan was fresh out of the oven, fluffy, with just the right amount of butter. (It definitely helped to put the fire out from the chicken!)
We ended off the meal with a "sweet" that tasted like candied ginger or another fruit mixed with almonds (also delicious). I'm not sure what it was, we were offered it and accepted and were game to try anything after the entrees.
I could not believe how different this meal was from every other Indian meal I've ever had. I was totally blown away, and wanted to share that with the class. It's certainly the best Indian food I've ever had in the city - can't say if it's THE best (maybe if I could ever convince myself that Jackson Heights is worth the trip I could compare), but I will say that it's a damn sight better than any other Indian restaurants I've tried.
Symposium- UWS Greek
I ate here for a friend's birthday back in April and it became one of my favorite greek spots in the city. I'd be a regular if not for the fact that the commute is a bit much when you live in Brooklyn. I really enjoyed the food we ate (just about every appetizer, and I tasted many of the different entrees). My memory was a bit fuzzy, due to the really excellent sangria we had as well (including the on-the-house 4th pitcher that our lovely waiter treated us to). But this place is definitely worth checking out.
New Bakery in Park Slope?
I'm excited about being able to pick up something sweet on the way home, although my diet will not be better for it. Thanks for the info!
New Bakery in Park Slope?
While out running an errand this evening, I noticed a new bakery had opened on 7th avenue, in between Smiling Pizza and Uncle Louie G's at 9th street. I didn't get a chance to go in and speak to the proprietor, but oh, did those pastries and cakes look lovely. There was no signage at all, and only one guy in there running the show. Has anyone else seen or heard about it?
So What are people making tonight for Dinner?
You too! (only we'll be feasting on Wonton soup, dumplings, spring rolls, and beef ho fun. mmmm.)
So What are people making tonight for Dinner?
The call to our favorite local Chinese restaurant. It's a family tradition!
Sushi in Park Slope or South Slope?
Second! I've had takeout and eat-in with Kiku, and I've enjoyed both. It's pretty non-traditional as sushi goes, but the fish is fresh and the combinations are delicious.
Help! I need to buy a pie today (Park Slope area).
I may get flame-broiled for this, and my apologies if its not what you're looking for, BUT:
My mom (Brooklyn born and raised, as am I) swears by the Mrs. Smith's pies she gets from the supermarket (Key Food generally, but C-Town might have them). Pop them in the oven for a couple of hours and they come out looking and tasting great. I really love their apple, and have for years. I don't much care for the pumpkin, but my sister likes this one pretty well, I've found.
(also, there's always Two Little Red Hens, in addition to Sweet Melissa and Cousin John's. I wonder if Lopez Bakery is doing Pumpkin pie?)
