What are your current faves in the Round Rock area?
Salt Lick BBQ
French Quarter Grille
Hoody's Subs
JT's BBQ
RIP V
Gumbos in Round Rock is closed. Website says lease issues, but will reopen in new location in future. I just wanted to stop in and grab some chocolate custard tonight.
Had to settle for salted chocolate toffee cookie from the steeping room at domain.
Smoked beef rib the Switch or J. Mueller or else?
Hey sqwertz,
I want to try some beef ribs in my big green egg. Give me some tips on time/temp and what especially do I need to ask for at the heb meat counter?
Elaine's Pork & Pie - great staff, pork, and carrot cake
They sell pulled pork that's not smoked, but out of an oven? Weird.
Any good Greek food in Austin?
Ok, had to go and try The Mediterranean Cafe for lunch today. It's out of the way, on aurora drive off of 2222. Not busy at all besides the workers in the back producing all the specialties. Had a lamb gyro with a pita and hummus on the side. Some of the toppings are non-typical (jalapeños, olives) but the gyro was huge and excellent. The hummus had a unique lemon flavor and is now my favorite in town...
I will put this in my regular Greek rotation for sure now. Pricing is $7.99/pound. My combo was 1.2 pounds, $10.38 with tax.
Any good Greek food in Austin?
Tinos is the normal chain standard here, there are several spread out over town. Not sure if you'll like it or not, it's nothing special.
Athenian Grill downtown is popular at lunch. Give it a try if you work downtown, otherwise skip it, you will pay a few extra dollars per plate compared to other spots and parking is a nightmare on west 6th.
Plaka is basically a direct copy of Athenian Grill, the food and portions are basically the same. I believe the owner of Plaka was related to Athenian Grill at some point, but don't remember the whole story. The food is fine, I can't compare it to Niko Niko in Houston since I've never been. Basically expect the standard Kronos gyro meat, spit grilled chicken, etc.
A stand out for me is Pars. The Hummus is unlike anything I've had in the area, much thicker and more garlicky. Great price for a gyro, side, and canned drink. Maybe $7.50? And they load the gyro up with meat.
Kebabalicious trailer on 2nd and Congress is good for a quick gyro. Open at Lunch, but went by yesterday at 1pm and they were closed...
I have not tried The Med Chef but that's next on my list.
Casino El Camino
It's the same burger as before. It's just not hip or trendy anymore to you. Now, the lines are at Hopdoddy or P. Terry's or whatever the latest gimicky place is. In a few years something else will come along....
Hard Hat Vol IX
You're probably thinking of Extreme Pita, which is right next to JJ's at 6th and Congress.
Hard Hat Vol IX
For the downtown lunch crew, Wholly Cow Burgers is going in at 7th and Congress Ave where Pita Pit just vacated last week.
Brownie Sundae??
While not a brownie specifically, I'd recommend the Double Chocolate Gooey Butter Cake with Vanilla bean ice cream at Chee Zee. A good place where it is normal to just order desert.
El Greco Closed?
$11 for a Gyro with no sides or drink. In a college neighborhood. How could this guy not succeed?
Eating At The Noble Pig In Austin
Ah, this thread has resurfaced. I finally tried it a few months ago, and got the namesake Noble Pig sammy. What a disappointment! It's about 90% bread, and 10% meat. The meat is a small lump of grey unappealing mess. You will not be able to differentiate any of the three meat favors. The bread is great, though. Which is a shame, because with a name like Noble Pig, I expected it to be all about the meat. I left hungry.
With so many good reviews, I want to try it again. But I'll be getting something else....
RIP part 4
Did they ever update the interior at that place? They needed a Restaurant Impossible makeover in the worst way. We went a few years ago and sat in a booth, it felt like I sat into a black hole. Good food, but the interior was so drab it wasn't an appealing place to take guests.
Groupon Restaurants to Avoid
I bet 25% never even get used.
I bought mine and then realized its only good for the south location. Reading comprehension fail.
roll with me here: best egg roll in austin?
So it's ok for someone to steal from us as long as they are old and make egg rolls?
Where is your favorite place to watch the UT game, have a good meal and get ice cold beer on tap?
Won't even be able to watch this week due to the Longhorn Network....
Mission style burritos...
Out of all the burrito shops in Austin, Cabo Bobs is my favorite. It's at Ben white and 35 behind the Chick Fil A.
All the meat is cooked over oak lump charcoal in big green eggs, and they make your tortilla only when you order it. Also, the entire place is HFCS free.

Cabo Bob's
500 E Ben White Blvd Ste D100, Austin, TX 78704
Bud's Po-Boys
Troy - have you tried Cover 3's shrimp po-boy? It was a lunch special a few months back so you might call first. Excellent Parmesan fries, too.
I haven't had many in Austin but I liked it and it was better than turf and surf on Congress, and cheaper to boot.
Favorite Austin Desserts?
Jasper's Desert Trio - 1) dark chocolate molten cake, 2) butter finger creme brûlée, 3)rocky road ice cream sandwich.
Gumbos chocolate custard (as previously mentioned)
Trulucks chocolate cake and chocolate box.
Seeking a restaurant in Austin with both a good beer selection and a tasty macaroi and cheese
Jaspers at the Domain.
Family friendly downtown restos, prefer Ethnic food
Athenian Grill off of 6th. Standard Greek fare with lots of veggie options.
The Worst Fish and Chips in Austin?
I believe there is a newish fish and chips trailer on the east side. Anybody try?
Edit: Bits and Druthers, 1001 e. 6th, 4 and 5 star yelp reviews, battered with real ale beer, everything scratch made....need to try....
In n Out in Austin?
I gotta say I'm torn with In and Out coming to Austin, or even Texas (one is going in up in the Dallas area, for the uninformed).
I try to avoid burgers and fries in general as much as possible. When I travel to Calfornia, Arizona, or Nevada, In and Out is the first place I stop when I leave airport. So good with a chocolate shake.
But if we had an IN and OUT in Austin? It's a west coast thing. Just wouldn't be the same here, for me anyway. And, it would just inspire a bunch of hating on this board because it's from CA and it's a chain.
Outdoor Kitchens? (and grilling goodness)
If you are going to drop serious coin on an outdoor kitchen, you have to get a big green egg. I can sear a bone in rib eye at 700 degrees in just a few minutes or slow smoke a pork shoulder for 16 hours at 225....with one small load of charcoal.
Check out BBQ outfitters out by steiner ranch. They do cooking demos all the time and will be happy to show you the ropes. I bought mine used somewhere else and they still taught me how to use it. I haven't burned food since I got this thing either.
Today's Austin Food-Related Groupon
Today is chi'lantro, the Korean BBQ taco truck. Never tried it. They had a show on the food network this weekend showing off the original LA version. Made me want to try it, but I'm not sure I would need $12 worth of food there.
Any good?
Central TX BBQ in Philly - Compare and Contrast
If you are going to recreate Texas q at least put Big Red long necks and Shiner Bock on the menu....
Is there a good philly cheese steak in Austin??
I'm not aware of any places that serve Cheesesteaks in Austin with Cheese Wiz. That being said, my votes would be Hog Island in Austin or Hoodie's Subs in Round Rock.
Texadelphia isn't great, but there mustard sauce is awesome. I get a regular grilled chicken sandwich and smother it in that stuff.
Big Red?
It's made with HFCS, but recently it has been produced using pure cane sugar (ala Dublin Dr. Pepper)
It's available on tap at Cabo Bob's in Austin, TX, and I would imagine Dublin, TX at the bottling plant.
County Line Am I missing something?
I haven't been in a year at least, but when I do get over there I get the beef ribs, which you don't find at most places. 3 out of 4 times they are great. 1 out of 4 times they are just ok.
Great Tex/Mex in Austin?
If you want to walk somewhere downtown, I'd go with El Chile Cafe, it's a few blocks from the capital on Congress.
