Birthday Cake

To FayeD:

The German bakery on 18th Street (between Chestnut and Market Streets) was called Rindalaub's. My spelling may be incorrect, but it is close. I used to work in that area for years and that's where we got birthday cakes for everyone in our office. Their stuff was great. Sorry to hear they are no longer there.

Birthday Cake

The Bakery House in Bryn Mawr is pretty good, especially their cheesecakes, but their prices are out of this world. They are VERY EXPENSIVE compared to most other bakeries.

stuff near the main line

Try Casselli's in Roxborough (which is right next to Manayunk). It's a neighborhood Italian restaurant about as far away from a chain as you can get. The food is superb. Never had a meal that wasn't great. You won't be sorry.

LA Chowhound Looking For Great Italian/Other Stuff

Oh God, don't go to Primo's. Ever since their expansion, they have gone downhill. BLECH!!!

Celebrity Cookware Lines: Rate 'Em!

I have had Le Creuset cookware for many years. Every so often, especially when I see it on sale, I'll pick up a new piece. Truly it is the BEST stuff out there without any celebrity name on it. I will say it is very heavy, and it's a bit challenging to lift up a big pot full of food sometimes, but it cooks everything perfectly. I'll stick with this stuff till I'm too old to cook anymore.

CHEAP EATS IN HORSHAM/WILLOW GROVE

Sorry to say I went to Great Burger 2 days ago and they have closed. There is a sign in the window to sell the fixtures. Too bad. That was definitely on my list of good places.

CHEAP EATS IN HORSHAM/WILLOW GROVE

I am temporarily staying in the Horsham/Willow Grove area and need to find a place with CHEAP EATS. I will be responsible for feeding 6-8 other people about 4-5 different meals over the course of a week, so it has to be affordable. And it has to be take-out. It doesn't have to be gourmet at all. Even a great burger place would work for one of the meals I have to provide. As long as they are not the most expensive ones out there. Is there a decent Italian restaurant that gives you a giant plate of spaghetti for a reasonable price?

I heard about a Chicken/BBQ place called "Chicken Time" and we tried some of their food and it wasn't the greatest. Plus their prices were not that cheap.

Any cuisine is fine except Mexican or Indian.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Does a good kosher bakery exist anywhere in the Del Val?

There's one on Haverford Avenue just off of City Line Avenue. Here's the info:

Applewood Smoked Bacon

Does anyone know of any store that sells applewood smoked bacon?

Please no center city, South Philly or NE Philly locations. I am mainly interested in Bala Cynwyd, main line area, Manayunk, Roxborough, East Falls, Chestnut Hill, Plymouth Meeting, Conshohocken, Lafayette Hill, Blue Bell, King of Prussia areas.

I know there are placed on the internet that you can mail order it, but I am looking for a place to buy it in my area.

BUTTER CAKE TO DIE FOR

If you love and crave an authentic creamy butter cake, you HAVE to try the ones at Dublin Bakery in Willow Grove. They are to DIE for. So is everything else in there too, but the butter cake is a real stand-out. They also make a fabulous sour cream cake (in the shape of a ring) with icing on top that is especially delicious. Their rugelach is melt-in-your-mouth buttery and unbelievable. This bakery has everything!! If you are ever in that neighborhood, you have to try it. It’s on Welsh Road in Willow Grove.

Corned Beef Special Near Chestnut Hill

Well it depends on whether you are talking about an authentic corned beef special from an authentic Jewish deli, or just any corned beef, cole slaw and Russian dressing slapped on any bread. If you want a real CBS, then you're out of luck in CH. You can go to King of Prussia to Michael's deli or Bala to Murray's or Hymie's. Those are the closest to CH geographically. There are some good places in NE Philly, but that's kinda far. And of course there are places in center city too.

GINO'S IN KING OF PRUSSIA

I've tried Gino's Burgers in King of Prussia several times now, and find their burgers to be the greasiest burgers I've ever had. On my first visit there, by the time I got them home, about 2 miles away, the bag was soaked thru with grease and the buns were gooey and the burgers themselves were dripping. I gave them another chance and it was exactly the same thing. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.

Chocolate Rugalach

The search is over!! I am ecstatic to report I have now had the most delicious rugelach in my entire life. I found them in a very unexpected way. Over the holidays I visited some friends who I have not seen in a long time. They live in Horsham, PA. On my way over there, I saw a bakery in a little shopping center near their apartment (Upper Dublin Shopping Center) and on a whim I stopped to pick up something to bring to my friends. I chose a beautiful cake, and just as I was about to pay for it, I noticed that they had several different kinds of rugelach, including chocolate. They were $.80 each, and I bought 6 of them. I left them in the car for myself when I arrived at my friend's place. The next day, I opened the bag and tasted the rugelach and I almost fell on the floor. They were the richest most delicious buttery outstanding rugelach I have ever had. Unfortunately, Horsham is very much out of the way for me, but I guess I will have to make the trip every so often now that I know they have such fabulous rugelach. If you live anywhere near the Dublin Bakery at 3626 Welsh Road in Willow Grove, go there. Everything I bought there was GREAT!!!

What is your favorite standing rib roast recipe?

I've tried them all and the BEST by far is Ina Garten's recipe. You can find it on the Food Network website. I've never had anything but rave reviews with all of her recipes.

Chocolate Rugalach

Thanks for your suggestion. Roling's does not have a website. I wish I could see a pic and check the price. Do you know how much they are? Thanks again.

Chocolate Rugalach

Thanks for the suggestion. I just looked at the ones you suggested, and they are $16.00 per pound for the chocolate ones. That's pretty steep. Before I order them, I need to ask you how terrific are they?? Would you say they are fabulous? Thanks for your help.

Chocolate Rugalach

I am looking for FABULOUS chocolate rugalach. I've tried the ones at Hymie's in Merion and they just aren't fabulous. Anyone know of other places to try them? They used to sell them by the pound at Clements Market before they closed, and they were to die for. They were made off the premises and brought in. I cannot remember who made them, but they were serious.

PLEASE not in center city, South Philly or NE Philly. I cannot get to those places.

Mostly interested in Main Line area, Manayunk, Roxborough, East Falls, Andorra, Lafayette Hill, Blue Bell, Plymouth Meeting, Conshohocken, King of Prussia or any place reasonably close.
Thanks!

Does anyone remember this cake?

It is now 9 years after this original post was written. I just saw this thread today. I too remember both Hanscom's and Horn & Hardart. Hanscom's had great stuff. Plus, they would sell their day-old stuff at bargain prices as well, which were not the least bit stale. I used to go to one right near the Read Terminal in center city.

About Horn & Hardart. I literally grew up on their food. They were all over the city in every neighborhood and they were inexpensive enough for my middle class family to go there almost every Sunday for dinner. I specifically remember the great aroma of different foods in the air as soon as you walked inside the door. It smelled like fresh coffee, chicken noodle soup and cinnamin buns all mingling together. Yum. I grew up eating their chopped sirloin for dinner practically every Sunday. Their desserts were great too. They made their own ice cream and it was the smoothest creamiest stuff you ever tasted. Too bad that all the great things that distinguished this city are gone.

Suzy-Jo's Donuts

Oops. . . . . . .Obviously I don't know the area very well. I think we are talking about the same place. Sorry for confusing the issue.

Suzy-Jo's Donuts

According to the internet, Suzy-Jo's is not where the above posts mentioned, unless the site I saw is wrong. The Blue Bell location is listed as 1380 Skippack Pike, which is just below Dekalb Pike on Skippack Pike.

Their phone number is listed as 610-270-2800, so you might want to call before going to make sure.

Suzy-Jo's Donuts

Thanks for your reply.

In my humble opinion, Dunkin' Donuts is not hard to beat. I could draw a donut on a piece of paper and eat the paper and it would be about what you get at Dunkin' Donuts. South Philly is waaaaay to far to go for a donut or 2, as is NYC. I will definitely try Suzy-Jo's. Thanks again.

Suzy-Jo's Donuts

Has anyone ever had donuts from Suzy-Jo's Donuts in Bridgeport and/or Blue Bell? I have been told that they are not to be missed by someone who's opinion I don't trust because we usually don't agree on any food items. Any other opinions out there?

Traditional Corned Beef & Cabbage dinner

I realize that this is VERY late in advance, but does anyone know where I might find a good corned beef and cabbage dinner tonight in the Main line, Manayunk, Roxborough, Plymouth Meeting area? Please NO center city, south Philly or northeast Philly locations.

Thanks!

Madray's, then Barson's, then Hymie's Too, now Moe's...Lafayette Hill

You really should give Murray's in Bala Cynwyd a try. They are also on Montgomery Avenue just one block down from Hymie's. I think their food is great. They have a deli and a restaurant section. I have not eaten in the restaurant in years, but the deli has good stuff. The prices are a little on the outrageous side, but if the food is good, it's worth a splurge now and then.

BBQ versus Grilled

Lately there have been a lot of BBQ places popping up all over the place. These are places that specialize in meat rubbed with a spicy dry rub and then basted with a BBQ sauce slow cooked over wood.

I am interested in grilled food, like the kind you can do in your back yard over charcoal or even a gas grill. Are there any places that anyone knows of anywhere in the Philadelphia or surrounding areas that have this kind of grilled food?????

I live in a condo where outdoor grills are forbidden, and I have not had a great hamburger or steak or chicken leg or ANYTHING grilled in sooooooo long. I'd love to find some place that does this.

Thanks!!

Amazing Cheesecake?

I love the cheesecake you can get at a bakery in Bryn Mawr called "The Bakery House". It's not in CC and it isn't a cafe, but it's the best, creamiest, densest, authentic cheesecake you could ever want. One of the previous posters was relishing a light and airy cheesecake. Blech!! That's definitely not the way I like mine.

Family dinner in Philadelphia.

I recommend Villa de Roma. Great classic Italian food in the heart of the Italian Market. There will be no problem with your teenagers either. Definitely NOT a formal or stuffy atmosphere either. You won't be disappointed.
