Publix coming to Asheville

No harm/no foul..... But that Target also sells meat, produce, dairy beer and wine so I believe that classifies them as a grocery store. ....

Publix coming to Asheville

Ingles has recently expanded their distribution facility. It is now over 1m sq feet. They have competed for many years in markets in NC, SC, TN and GA w/ Publix, Harris Teeter, Kroger, Food City , Food Lion, BiLo.
And have had competition for many years in their "hometown" of Asheville. For perspective you might want to count the number of Publix markets in their hometown of Lakeland, FL - it is at least 9.
Harris Teeter was in Asheville (Biltmore Forest) for years until they left and Lowes Foods tried a brief but unsuccessful stint. SuperTarget is in the East Asheville shopping center.

Publix coming to Asheville

It is interesting to hear people talk about Ingles having a "strangle hold" on Asheville when for the past 7 years there've been Earthfare(2), Greenlife (aka Whole Foods), SuperWalmart (4?), Aldi's (4 or more), BiLo, Food Lion, Fresh Market, Super Target, Lowes Foods, Harris Teeter.... not to mention countless farmer's markets in Asheville.... Since Ingles started out here it's not really that much of a surprise that they have the most stores in Asheville and actually their largest number of stores is in GA - not in NC.

Asheville (West) - Isis

This seems to be sort of an "under the radar" spot more known as a music venue but have a nice dining room w/ large windows and outside seating as well.
Have been twice and really enjoyed both. They have "sliders of the day" and I've tried the duck confit, pork belly & fried green tomato w/ pancetta - all wonderfu. A kale salad w/ pickled red onions and cashews is very tasty as well. We were pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the food was and the time we went all 3 of us were pleased w/ our choices. We had 3 alcoholic beverage...a mussels app...kale salad...sliders and 2 entrees and bill (before tip) was just over $60.

Imperial Life - Asheville

This is a newish (2-3 months old) bar space upstairs from Table Restaurant. Very nice space w/ wood floors and interesting Asheville historic photos on some of the walls. Big windows look out towards the street - this will be fun in summer months. We tried the Housemade charcuterie platter ...good place to meet friends before heading out for the nite.

Winter to Spring in Asheville - 2013

Finally tried MG Road and I totally see what the fuss is about. Great small plates - we had a wonderful Tamarind Glazed Lamb Chop...This would be a great place to meet friends and share small plates.

Greenville SC - The South's Next Big Food City?

well, since so many from Greenville talk longingly of dining in Asheville....
I guess SC's options are limited. Charleston being WAAAY out in front I guess Greenville is the next good option. I do think Greenville has improved in the past few years w/ some new chefs w/ greater appreciation for local/regional foods and not just ordering from Sysco.

Weaverville - Glass Onion

We hadn't been in a while so thought we'd stop by for dinner and were pleasantly surprised. On a Friday night they were busy but handled a full house with attention and grace. We ordered the night's soups and special appetizers and everything was delicious and well-prepared. We'll be back.

Winter to Spring in Asheville - 2013

Seems like there is always something new going on in Asheville so chime in if you have more info or have been to any of these:
MG Road - hearing LOTS of good things about this bar/small plate place by the owners of Chai Pani
TAP Asheville - closed. Unfortunately no great loss, too inconsistent.
Lots of cooking competitions going on in the "slow" months...Fire on the Rock in January. Restaurant Week in February.....

Asheville Updates Fall 2012

yes, I agree that Avenue M is a great neighborhood spot that often gets overlooked. Reasonably priced and good quality drinks, foods and service....we have always been pleased with the food. Chestnut is a wonderful addition to downtown with its blonde, serene interior and beautiful bar area....We just had drinks and apps at the bar but everything was delicious so we'll be back to try a meal.

Latin Flavor Cafe, Asheville

we had almost the same thought when we pulled into the parking lot...uih-oh - only a few cars here, though of course it was a week night. I would agree that it is more like our old Tomato (when it was on Patton Ave/Smoky Park) then your run-of-the-mill Tex Mex, however we were not quite as impressed w/ the food. Our arepas were just bland and it seemed like the food was missing something...cilantro? spices? We would try it again and order other entrees apps to give it another chance. Certainly reasonable, large portions and very attentive service.

so sad to see all of these bad reports of the GPI. Lots of staff and policy changes since their sale earlier this year. Hopefully things will be back on track soon.

Market Place or The Junction - Asheville

so where did you end up? These are two of my favorite restaurants - but very different. The Junction is good and has stellar cocktails but often the pace of service can be a bit "relaxed" . The Market Place has a fine, professional, consistent staff and their Chef/owner is very creative. I would agree that the Junction would be better w/ kids as it's more casual and noisy.

Whole Foods to Open New Store in Asheville

A curious choice for this newest WF location. Tunnel Rd is one most often avoided by most in Asheville, particularly on weekends and of course holiday time. There is already a large, new and very busy Ingles very close to town and the demographics of that store are pretty mixed. WF clientele would seem to be primarily N. Asheville around UNCA and affluent neighborhoods near Grove Park or S. Asheville near Biltmore Park so building on the east side of town seems an odd choice. Seems like it would make more sense to sell their Greenlife location to Trader Joe's - giving them a larger store and be somewhere closer to N. Asheville or S. Asheville instead....time will tell.

Blackbird, Asheville

Too bad - had high hopes for this place and have been by a couple of times and it was packed. Asked for a copy of the menu and was underwhelmed. Looks like a very "play it safe" menu that you'd find in any town USA...but not in Asheville. Hope they step up their game a bit.

Biltmore Village(Asheville) Restaurant Wk til 9/23

Unfortunately underpublicized due some PR issues w/ a media partner that fell thru...the Biltmore Village Restaurant Week is a good time to stop by some of the gems in BV and experience a prix fixe for $30 per person (excluding wine)...Red Stag Grill, Neo Burrito, Ruth's Chris, Corner Kitchen, Fig and Rezaz all have different offerings. Call ahead and ask what's on the Restaurant Week menu...

Thanksgiving - Asheville

Sante is a great wine bar downtown. All that made your "must try" list are my favorites - you have great taste :)...I would add Posana which is right downtown as well. - just around the corner from Curate. The owner's family has their own farm, can't remember if it's pork or beef so they use a lot of that as well as many other local products.

Harrah''s Cherokee restaurants

While I don't think Harrah's Cherokee compares to Las Vegas casino culinary stardom, there are some good options ...
1. Chefs Stage Buffet - if you like to sample a litte of everything
2. Paula Deen's - the rich Southern dishes she made famous, though I hear a new menu is coming with "lightened up" options in keeping with her new focus since being diagnosed w/ diabetes.
3. Ruth's Chris - swanky chic lounge type restaurant serving top quality steaks
4. Brio - my favorite - a high-end chain Italian ...reminds me a bit of a Carrabas

I wish the music in these restaurants was more theme-based...it seemed the one discordant note throughout that the music was loud and not really fitting the environment.

ASHEVILLE -- Light Dinner Suggestion?

a few thoughts - if you want to stay downtown...
Posana - and sit outside or Laughing Seed (vegetarian) on Wall St - also has outside seating - great for people watching...same street as Cucina 24 you could also do Market Place which has a great bar and outside seating and has some wonderful small plates.
River Arts District - The Junction - wonderful cocktails - also has outside seating
Are you going to bypass the Grove Park Inn? At least go up at sunset and have a drink overlooking the city - amazing view.

Asheville Public - River Arts Dist Asheville

This restaurant opened up about 6 months ago and is now owned by a couple from S. Africa - or at least one of them is. It's across from the Grey Eagle and just up the street from River Arts District in a former greasy spoon diner. Fairly meat-centric menu, their charcuterie plate is one of the best I've had in Asheville. Wine by the glass is very reasonable, as are the creative cocktails. Any more cocktails are priced at $9 & over in most Asheville restaurants and these were I think around $8. I had a delicious vegetarian stuffed roasted pepper that would have been perfect if they'd removed the skin from the pepper. THey have some outside seating and ample parking. Very fun, eclectic decor inside. It reminds me a bit of the Admiral.

first visit to Zambra, Asheville

I wish I could have more consistent experiences at Zambra. Sometimes the tapas are "knock your socks off" and then just mehh. Sometimes the service is attentive & professional and sometimes they've blatantly forgotten about us or been surly. That being said, I've been dining at Zambra since they first opened in...hmmm mayb 2000 or 2001 and overall it remains one that I will recommend. It's perfect for a cozy romantic dinner or a "tapa" at the bar and a glass of wine.
