Where do you buy pesto in Calgary?

I have one italian brand I really like, the Italissima basil pesto, it has olive oil pine nuts and grana padano(fancy parmesan). You can get it at Linas italian market, think I was it at sunterra keynote too and probably any italian market. I found a substitute that purer basil flavor: tube basil(a little off tasting like jarred garlic, but yummy nevertheless!) The premade has a very nice balance.

Chemical/Alternatives to the real thing-- that you actually like better...

just as long as its not campbells broth of any sort. so disgusting. I actually found a generic brand at a bulk type store that is probably the best ive had, it actually tastes like chicken and isn't sickeningly salty. But yes cubes over campbells any day :) even bulk powders!

What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?

corn (freakin'!) flakes, russet potatoes! white onion(I use only red) rarely also any spices with salt added.

condensed soups, flavorless soda crackers. Lays original potato chips. :)

probably some sort of filler in there! maybe a vegetable or grain too though, oatmeal or made like a meatloaf. Though the use of mechanically separated meat is plausible... eww My favorite cafeteria food as a kid was these hotdogs that were just with cheese in a bun with an ordinary hot dog, they wrapped them in tinfoil and the outside was always crispy and the inside kind of bonded with the bun. Mmm.... too bad I don't eat kraft singles or refined white hotdog buns anymore! mmm gives me ideas for a better 'healthy' gourmet version though. There was also a banana slices with peanut butter in a hotdog bun. *shivers*

Favorite coffeehouse/cafe with wifi and why?

I am pretty sure anywhere in kensington has interesting people :) it may sound silly when I lived on that side I liked the second cup by the safeway the seating is good and people are always chillin doing their work and stuff. I like the deVilles downtown very good for people watching(or sketching ;) ) the coffee was not bad but I didn't drink much of it because I accidentally ordered caffiene :( i'm kind of an outcast since I started drinking no caffiene... aww this is like me and cheese, except I have an aversion to cheeses! There go two major culinary families! No fun coffee far up in the NE... P&S also my favorite coffee. I have a friend that works at caffe rosso, how is it? :P

another thing I didn't know existed! I love kielbasa but stopped eating it a few years ago, because it seems so unhealthy, I'll have to look the turkey up, I like chicken sausages so chances are they are pretty rad

Opening in Calgary?

I visited the mall on tuesday, post is a bit late but I thought I would put in my 2 cents

At phil and sebastian's I asked for something really simple decaf w/milk and it was the best coffee I've had in a long long time :) Nice lil heart on the top... sorry, I was too tired to pay attention to the equip but *cough* I couldn't help but notice they take your name... apparently someone here has been one of their best/most loyal customers for years ;) I'm kind of embarrassed that the question slipped out, I think it kind of surprised them. Pastries look yummy and there are some really tasty sounding sandwich combinations.

I got a chocolate/cheesecake marble cupcake that had swirled white coconut batter with the chocolate. It's basically buttercream bakeshoppe using only simple flavors. Fancy lil shop.

The new saucy bread looks a lot better. wicked wedge is still delicious :P I also went to the new cookware store, pretty stuff, but if I had the money I don't think I would buy it! Godiva was giving out free truffles and caramels to sample I'm not really into truffles but the cake flavored ones sounded good.. carrot cake etc.

Forever 21 wasn't open yet, at least I enjoyed the lego, mac(computer) and sephora stores.. I'll have to go back when everything is open, and try some P&S sandwiches ;)

1. Bacon salt. I even sprinkle it on back bacon sometimes.
2. Soy milk- over light milks, fuller body, creamier
3. Butter flavour extract or salt... in baking and veggies, well except on the obvious toasts
4. Low fat cream cheese- over both full fat cc and mayo
5. Soy hotdogs- taste exactly the same as the mechanically sepearated ones because its artificial flavor anyways (and makes me remember a video of a a bright pink bubblegum like food being tubed into a box... but it was meat and meat filler blech.) And protein instead of fat.

This could be quite interesting ;)

What to eat with cottage cheese?

right now my fav is a blend of 50% cottage cheese an tart balkan yogurt mixed with, cinnamon, sugar, fresh chopped mint 2-3 tbsp chopped fruit, or a combination of, with orange zest grated in... my fruit right now is plumcot, like a huge crisp grape...

I also make it by sandwich-ing the above in dutch pannenkoek that has onion, back bacon and the flavor of cinnamon nutmeg and vanilla and maple syrup. trust me, delicious.

OCD food with little or no nutritional value

"The most manic-obsessive openfaced sandwich I hope to ever make. Using at least 40 ingredients, many of which need special prep.

minced fresh parsley, basil, wr...apped inside very thin proscuitto, grilled marinated eggplant v, canned black minced olives, thinly sliced red pepper, Bocconcini(fresh mozzarella, best from the fresh or sealed pouch, not tub)

crispy lettuce wrap leaves-Superstore, dressed with goat feta cheese and a spritz of balsamic of modena-Costco,

under lettuce, three slices of cucumber pepper & garlic salt, atop wasa light rye toasts spread with Garden vegetable cream cheese-Kraft, and a thin layer of Peach chutney-Superstore, minced fresh parsley, basil.

serve with Perrier, which sounds much like a frothy mountain stream when poured and the crisp lime flavor invokes a calming, cooling vision, . Why? Because it has way less BPA than that other plastic crap and is classy :)"

"Then I follow with sliced sweetened strawberries marinated in balsamic vinegar & jagermeister with fresh minced mint on a butter spreaded wasa bread with perhaps a thin layer of blueberry preserves-smuckers."

Tartaric acid in Calgary?

yeah I was reading about making meringues awhile back, cream of tartar is basically tartaric acid, I think. But lemon juice and vinegar can be used too, cream of tartar is favored for its flavourlessness and lengthier stability :)

Fazer and other Finnish candy in Calgary

In the North east, across from nort hill mall turn up after the home depot, Edelweiss Village(German/Dutch store) has a pretty good selection, I go there to get my schnitzel and red cabbage fix(drool) As for finnish candy I dont know.... There was some jams and things with the berries but nothing fresh...
