NYC January 8th Dinner

We have Spanish Tapas (now "Iron Chef" Jose Garces) but not a lot of it. I will check out Casa Mono. Shame about CBGB, the menu jumped out at me.

We do have excellent Italian, so it would have to be very different. It's one thing we do very well.

NYC January 8th Dinner

I am open to anything between the two budgets as long as I feel it is a valuable meal for the money.
Craft looked too expensive, Hearth more reasonable.
Drinks means 1 glass of wine per person or 1 craft beer per person.

Even $100 per person? Still on a Philadelphia budget.
Our meal would ideally be:
1 Appetizer
2 Entrees
1 Dessert
2 Drinks
Tip
Tax

I wouldn't like to spend more than $100 - $200 total.

NYC January 8th Dinner

In town from Philadelphia, visting with my hubby to be for my 30th birthday.

Looking for a Manhattan restaurant for special occasion.

Guidelines: Nothing stuffy, takes reservations, food that is downright INCREDIBLE, not loud (I want this night to be relaxing), great wine or beer list. Budget: $50 - $100 per person including one appetizer, entrees, dessert to share, drinks (one per person).

We are young and like interesting food - ideally something we can't get in Philadelphia. Local menu, comfort food, culinary innovation - we like it all.

So send ideas my way - and feel free to ask questions.

Any GOOD wine shops in Philly/PA?

I believe it's Quaker. But it's been here forever. Your only other option is to visit another state.

Phoenixville

I understand your point, but if felt I was walking through the door of an authentic mexican restaurant and was told my meat was red because of food coloring, I too would have returned the dish.

Of course! Kanella tops my list right now - love it there. Not a ton of vegetarian, but doable.

I love Branzino and recommend it wholeheartedly. I think Estia would be a better choice than Devon though.

Best ethnic cuisine in Philly?

Being confined to Center City West makes your request a little difficult. You're also requesting to leave out Italian which is one of the places, if not the most where Philadelphia excels.

I am getting the vibe you are looking for very authentic casual spots off the tourist map.

The good news about Center City West is that you are surrounded by some of the most
high-end fabulous restaurants the city has to offer. The negative is that the more hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants are in other areas.

So here is a list of great ethnic restaurants that aren't necessarily near you:

Mexican - Taqueria de Puebla
Vietnamese - Vietnam Restaurant, Nam Phuong
Chinese - Shiao Lan Kung
Burmese - Rangoon
Cornicopia of everything - Reading Terminal Market
Indian - Ekta or Tiffin

Recommendations for restaurants in Center City West that are not "ethnic" or "cheap" but are amazing:

Tria
Tinto
Caffe Casta Diva
Branzino
Meme
Le Bec Fin
Lacroix

"Cheap" restaurants that aren't "ethnic" in Center City West that are amazing:

Good Dog
Pub and Kitchen

Apamate - South and 16th

I hear your points but do agree with the original poster - IMHO their are small plates and SMALL plates. I had a similar experience years ago at Bar Ferdinand where we spend $100 and left hungry.

Dinner near North Star Bar - 27th & Poplar Sts

This is a tough one for me because I don't like The Belgian Cafe, Rembrandt's, Aspen, Trio, London Grill or Jack's.

I haven't tried Bridgid's yet though.

I can't think of anything within walking distance I would choose to spend money at. St Stephen's Green is decent but a bit further away...
