Halifax -- glucose syrup and agar agar?

Bayer's Lake. It's in tubs on the shelves in the aisle furthest to the left when you walk in.

Brunch suggestions for Halifax?

I actually did try Nectar today. The brunch was quite nice, but as with you, not wonderful enough that I'll make the trip that often. I had the asparagus crepes and a side of sausage. The crepes had little discs of asparagus in the filling rather than spears or larger slices and while bacon is always welcome, I'm not sure that having it there did the asparagus flavour any favours. The sausage was fine--plentiful (2 whole large sausages), but nothing out of the ordinary.

Clear corn syrup

I went to 3 grocery stores in my part of town (west of Christie) and did not find clear corn syrup at any of them. Any tips for someplace that does stock it not too, too far away?

Specialty groceries Halifax

Anyone have any favourite places for specialty goods, i.e. the kinds of things you can't find at Sobeys, in Halifax (ethnic ingredients, gourmet ingredients, baking-specific ingredients etc)? I'm moving there shortly and would like to have some idea of where to go.

Excellent brunch at School Bakery & Cafe

I had been for brunch to School before and loved the food. I find the lineups frustrating, but have attempted to go either early or late when they're less busy. The service has in general been ok, although understandably rushed. On Sunday May 24 I went with 2 friends and was EXTREMELY disappointed with the service. Their website lists brunch hours as follows:

Mon - Fri: 8am to 7pm (detention from 3:30 - 7)
Saturday: Brunch 10 - 4
Sunday School: Brunch 10 - 4

We arrived at 2:50, there was no lineup and we were COMPLETELY ignored for 15 minutes. It wasn't that we weren't seen, it was that they looked right past us. When one of my friends finally got frustrated and went to ask what was going on we were told that the kitchen was closing at 3 and they weren't seating any more people. Needless to say, not only did the brunch hours not reflect those listed, but the lack of courtesy in informing us of the adjustment was astounding. I have enjoyed previous brunches at School a great deal, but this experience left me unhappy and unlikely to go again.

Edmonton near Coast Plaza

I would like the names of about 2 close restaurants as it is so cold (am at the 105th St and Jasper location). I don't have a car and I'm not inclined to go far at night as I don't have a vehicle. A search won't help me much in terms of proximity without more research than I want to do. I have no idea of the geography of Edmonton.

Edmonton near Coast Plaza

Is there a good mid-priced restaurant or two within walking distance (or v short taxi/bus ride) of the Coast Plaza hotel? OK with any kind of cuisine, but prefer prices for mains to be $26 or less.

Vegan-friendly regular restaurant south of Bloor?

My friend is vegan. I am not. Is there such a place? Not particularly interested in suggestions like Fresh or Urban Herbivore etc. Would like to have some veggie and some non-veggie options.

Is Nota Bene a good restaurant for Valentine's Day dinner?

I think Auberge du Pommier would be a better choice and the service there is also excellent. Although it'll likely be busy, I don't think that the quality will be affected by V-Day. Another place I've been which is nice (pink room!) and where the food is good is the Harbord Room.

Food is good and service is excellent, but it's not an intimate-feeling or romantic space.

Vacuum-packed chestnuts

Thanks! They were there for $1.99/100 g--waaaay cheaper than the store in the St Lawrence Mkt. It seems like a pretty decent grocery/bulk store (910 St Clair W).

Is there a location in Montreal (relatively central, but okay as long as I can reach via the Metro) with a greater selection of local QC beer/cider? Not interested in imports. Thanks!

Ottawa near Radisson

I'm staying at the Radisson on Queen St in Ottawa. Any recommendations for a good dinner place with moderate prices ($15-$50 pre-tax for one) that I can walk to? Most cuisines work for me, but I don't feel like sushi or Central/South American food tonight.

Toronto Life: Best New Restaurants- pick one

I like Globe & JKWB (local ingredients, nicely prepared, not super-expensive). Found Cowbell, Spice Room VERY underwhelming. C5 is ok, but I think that you could do better.

Visiting Philadelphia--Suggestions?

I'm visiting Philadelphia for about 5 days in March. It'll be my first time there and I'm staying near Locust/Broad. I would like suggestions that are either quite close to there or easily (less than 30 mins) accessible by transit. Am interested in a few things:

1. Scrapple or variations thereof--best places?
2. Cheesesteak--best places?
3. Excellent brunch--neighbourhood joints, no greasy spoons.
4. Mid-priced dinner restaurants--entrees from $15-$29. Will likely be dining with a celiac so would prefer to avoid places that serve mostly pasta & other wheat flour-based things although generally there are a couple of items on any restaurant menu that work. Also like good dessert--homemade, a bit inventive. Prefer relatively casual (nice sweater/jeans) as I won't be packing lots of dressy things.
5. Read somewhere about a prix fixe lunch at Le Bec Fin? Do they still do that? If so, which days of the week and how much does it cost? Are there other upscale places that are open for weekday lunches that you would recommend? Would prefer to contain eating costs, by having lunch rather than dinner if going to fancy places.
6. Anything else unique to Philadelphia that you feel I absolutely should try.

Help! Dinner for 12-20 Wed 9 pm

Any suggestions for a dinner for 12-20 people in either a restaurant or bar (moderate prices--mains $12-$25) on Wednesday night (around 9 pm) south of Bloor and between Roncesvalles & Yonge? The only suggestion so far is Duff's Wings and I'm not so keen on that.
