Pok Pok NY...good, not great

Even better, we ending up *biking* to Pok Pok. Only 15 minutes, straight across the Gowanus Canal! And we were seated in the patio immediately! Biked along the waterfront to DUMBO afterwards, saw Tall Ships, etc. Great night. "Khanom Jiin Naam Ngiew" was our favorite (Northern Thailand-style vermicelli in deeply savory broth w/pork ribs, minced beef, tomatoes, dried dawk ngiew, house-pickled mustard greens, etc.) The little "dok ngiew "were new to me! Also, I agree with EJC (below) that the cocktails are unusual and interesting.

I don't get over to Columbia Street very often, but I have to do an errand nearby via car. What is the parking like on Columbia Street? Also, for future reference, is the B61 bus the best way to get there from Park Slope? (Sorry, I know these are not food questions, but any input would be appreciated.)

lime juice for margaritas, preferably in B'lyn

We drank about 60-70 margaritas (30 people, average of 2-3 each). I ended up getting a jug of fresh-squeezed lime juice from the Manhattan Fruit Exchange, and it was worth every penny!

Thank you both for the information! I really appreciate it.

lime juice for margaritas, preferably in B'lyn

I want to serve margaritas at a party this weekend. I know that fresh-squeezed lime juice is the ideal but, realistically, I won't have time to squeeze 1,000 limes! Is there any half-way decent lime juice I can buy, preferably in Brooklyn?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

brooklyn heights, carrol gardens, cobble hill area pizza crawl

I agree, Fornino's pizza in Park Slope is not very good. (Nothing like the Fornino's in Williamsburg.)

brooklyn heights, carrol gardens, cobble hill area pizza crawl

I second the motion for Sottocasa. their pizza is great, although sometimes a little undercooked, so you might want toask them to cook it " well done ."

Lunch near the Brooklyn Botanic garden

I second the motion for Tom's.

P.S. With all due respect, Bob Martinez, sometimes telling people to read previous threads does not really help with their specific question. For example, Franny' is not open for weekday lunches, and is a long walk for a 5-year-old

Dine In Brooklyn

River Cafe today was WONDERFUL! What a STEAL at only $20.12!! And the service was lovely. They did not treat us like the "poor relations" who show up there only during DIB (even though that's exactly what we were).

Dine In Brooklyn

Has anyone tried the RoseWater DIB menu?

Talde

NellyNel, I cannot believe three people ate ALL THAT!! wow.

Celebratory weekday lunch in Brooklyn

I was going to say Al Di La or Frankie's Spuntino, but they are both Italian...

If money is no object, how about the River Cafe? It's so lovely, it won't duplicate your Babbo meal, and the DUMBO neighborhood is fun to walk around in.

P.S. You sound like a very nice boyfriend (LOL)!

Dine In Brooklyn

Nina, I had the DIB lunch at Stone Park Cafe yesterday, and it was great! Main course was choice of steak or slamon, and the lemon pudding-y cake dessert was DELICIOUS. I have had problems with Stone Park's attitude in the past, but the service couldn't have been nicer this time. Some other good choices are probably Applewood, Al Di La, Kiwiana, Moim and Palo Santo (all in Park Slope), River Cafe (DUMBO), James (Prospect Heights), and Aurora (W'burg). If you have tried any, please give us a report. :)

Kiwiana

Another shout-out to Kiwiana! Since the earlier reports were posted last fall, the place has gotten its liquor license and has some nice wines. The food, atmosphere and service were all lovely. I know it gets jammed on weekends, especially for brunch, but our weeknight dinner was very relaxed. Also, they have a "happy hour" special (until 7:00 p.m.) lamb burger for only $10 (normally $12) and some glasses of wine for $5.

Yemen Cuisine (Court St.) vs. Yemen Cafe (Atlantic Ave.)

I know a lot of you Brooklyn chowhounds like Yemen Cafe (176 Atlantic Ave., 2nd floor). I also want to recommend YEMEN CUISINE, around the corner at 145 Court, slightly south of Atlantic (i.e, across from Trader Joe's entrance). The place doesn't look like much, but I think the food is equally delicious. The same lamb broth, fresh-made bread, roasted lamb (haneez), assed, fatta, etc. When I go for lunch there, I'm usually the only person not speaking Arabic and the only woman in the place, but the atmosphere is not unwelcoming. Next time I want to try the broiled trout with tomato sauce.

P.S. I tried to add this to an existing Atlantic Ave./Middle Eastern thread, but for some reason it didn't work.

Japanese Restaurants in Park Slope

BrookBoy, please tell us which ones you liked so far. Any pleasant surprises among Kiku, J'Pan, Yamato? I used to love Kappa Sake House on 5th Avenue but, alas, it closed.

Lunch at MetroTech

A new place in MetroTech Two, called La Defense, is pretty good. Also, I think DeKalb Market will re-open soon for weekday lunches -- some interesting choices, if overpriced. If you have time to walk a few more minutes, you could walk down Hoyt Street to Fast & Fresh (Mexican joint with tacos, etc.) or Mile End (Montreal-style Jewish place w/smoked meat, etc.). Also, Nicky's Vietnamese sandwich shop on Atlantic Ave. If you search chowhound for posts on nearby areas -- Smith Street, Atlantic Avenue, Montague Street, etc. -- you will get lots of ideas!

Just wanted to note, in case anyone is interested, that Cheryl's and Amorina both open early on weekdays.

weekday late breakfast/early lunch, Prospect Heights?

Are any good places in Prospect Heights open at 10:30 or 11:00ish on weekdays, besides Tom's Diner? Need to eat super-early tomorrow (Friday) before a museum visit. I've been to Amorina, Aliseo, Zaytoons, Taqueria de los Muertos, Le Gamin, and Beast -- all at dinner time, never during a weekday. (I think that Franny's and Geido are both closed on weekdays, right?)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sottocasa - Neapolitan Pizza in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

There seems to be a consensus that the pizza is undercooked. Maybe if enough of us ask them to cook it longer, they will!

Friday Lunch at Sidecar

I didn't know Sidecar was open for any weekday lunches, so thanks for the info.

Flex Donuts at Grand Central

Oh dear God. The best. donuts. ever. I tried one pumpkin spice, another salted caramel. I'm in love. Has anyone else experienced the ecstasy?

Burgers in Brooklyn

As long as this thread has gotten off the original topic of burgers near Cobble/Boerum Hill, let's throw in Double Windsor!

to secondbecky: I REALLY dislike Bare Burger, as I have posted before, but I may be in the minority. A lot of people seem to like it.

Bar Tabac closed?

Never mind, I finally got through.

Bar Tabac closed?

Sorry to bother everyone, but I wonder if any Brooklyn chowhounds know whether Bar Tabac is closed for some reason? They haven't been answering their phone for two days.

last minute: Providence restaurants open Monday dinner?

At the last minute, my sister has volunteered to take the kids for the night. Hooray! The only problem is htat it's Monday night, and a lot of places (Chez Pascal, Farmstead) are closed. Does anyone know of places that are open on Monday? They don't have to be fancy -- just not typical burger or pizza places (where we would could go with our kids anytime). Thanks in advance.

Sottocasa - Neapolitan Pizza in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

Note that Sottocasa is about to change their hours. The good news is that they'll be open 7 days per week now. But the bad news (at least for those of us who work in the area) is that they will no longer be open for weekday lunches, starting in January.
So, it will be open every night for dinner, plus Saturday and Sunday brunch.

Brooklyn bridge marriott area

I think Jack the Horse is not open for lunch. (At least, it didn't used to be.)

Pumpkin and pecan pies NYC

Faith, you should check out another recent thread on getting pies in Brooklyn.

By the way, if you are planning for Thanksgiving, 4& 20 Blackbirds is already sold out. :(
