Gluten-free dining in Brooklyn- need recommendations
I would suggest that first you start with the restaurants that look most appealing to you. I have CD and am very sensitive and I have yet to go to a restaurant and have a problem in the past 10 years. You may want to avoid the pizzerias and the BBQ places ( found a number of them that use soy sauce in marinades or sauces. Happy to weigh in once you narrow your choices.
What's good near the last R stop in Bay Ridge?
A bit too long to Tanoreen. A new Greek food market opened on about 95th and 3rd. They have a little hot food section. I believe that they also have a few seats in a cafe section. Also Paneantico makes nice sandwiches ( be sure to use the reduced balsamic they put on the tables...)
WHERE CAN I BUY FROZEN SARDINES AT A FISH MARKET IN NYC, SI, BKLYN, NORTHERN NJ?
Try Popular in Newark.
Thinking of moving from Brooklyn, NY to Austin--what would I be in for, foodwise?
Gee- why do I travel to Austin to eat ? Cause it really is about the meat and the smoke in Texas. We don't seem to understand that here in Brooklyn.
soft serve ice cream/custard trucks
I have yet to find a soft serve truck in NY that answers my DQ craving. No joke- closest has been Mickey Dees...
Trip to NYC. Any suggestions??
My favorite "simple" breakfast that includes bacon is at Maialino. It would also give you a chance to explore the Union Square market which might provide you with picnic options.
One afternoon in London
Launceston Place is wonderful but... If you are in a walking mood, I would go to Whole Foods and get some takeaway. Might even be nice to have a picnic if the weather holds.
Afternoon Tea Before Theatre [London]
We opted for tea at Claridges prior to the theater. It made for a wonderful afternoon/evening.
Good Eats in Bay Ridge?
Welcome. Bay Ridge has a wealth of choices and is also convenient to Sunset Park. Really depends upon where in BR you are though- give us more info as to what you like and what part of the neighborhood you have moved to...
GF London recap
First I want to thank everyone who posts on this board- I have been lurking for months as I prepared my itinerary. Since my last visit, London has become one of the most hospitable cities for those of us with Celiac Disease and with some GF guidance and info gleaned from this board- I have just completed a successful trip.
Day one - Lunch Launceston Place. I considered this the bargain find- 2 courses for 19 pounds. GF Menu choices were limited but they were very gracious in offering me options from the dinner dessert menu that were GF. At one point our server volunteered that he could see about getting GF bread- it was completely unnecessary given the volume of food.
Day two was Brixton Village Market and Borough Market. Federation Coffee served the best coffee of our trip- worth a trip from anywhere. Honest Burger for lunch- possibly the best burger I have had in London- and excellent chips with a hint of Rosemary. An absolute haven for someone with CD- everything about the burger was GF including the bun from WAGfree in the market. They serve the burgers medium but will make them your way upon request. They will be serving GF beer soon. A tiny place so arrive early or prepare to wait- worth it. Did stop and buy some pies at WAGfree. Cheese and onion was tastiest. Next stop Borough Market- one of the bakeries that also supply Whole Foods- sorry, having a senior moment as to the name. Cheese from Neals and some acorn fed jamon from Brindisa.
Friday was tea at Claridges. We wanted the fanciest tea that we could find- and Claridges fit the bill. Sandwiches served on Genius brand bread- one of my favorites. I got the feeling that they may have forgotten about my GF reservations because the dessert selections seemed to have been missing something- but I could live for the sultana scones ( will try to replicate them myself). Thank goodness I am not sensitive to dairy because clotted cream makes everything right with the world!
Next two days were catch as catch can- big kudos to Whole Foods for an excellent selection of GF offerings. One lunch at Wagamama. If I was traveling with small children, this would be a must stop- but otherwise, I could live without.
Monday lunch at Clarkes. Small menu again but everything I picked was GF. My daughter proclaimed this her favorite meal. Quick bite at Itsu- a real surprise given the location ( around the Strand) and the prices. Cashier seemed confident that almost everything on the menu was GF- I simply had salmon sushi- a good safe choice.
I came home with a suitcase full of "Free From" products from Tesco, Whole Foods, and Waitrose. I never once felt deprived, and never once had anyone say -what does gluten free mean?....Thank you London!
late night food near Newark Airport en route to Wayne
Have a look at Tony Da Caneca's in the Ironbound. They are open until 11p on Friday- would that qualify for the right direction?

Dehydrated is a first for me but I get the regular stuff through Amazon
high-end Mexican in El Paso?
Whew! I was worried when we hadn't heard from you!!! Glad you had such a positive experience- come back soon...
high-end Mexican in El Paso?
Unfortunately lunch at Avilas... better than it has been but still not as good as it was...
high-end Mexican in El Paso?
LOL- the mother in me worries...
No, have not tried the Juarez outposts of any of these places- quit crossing the border a few years ago ( but you shouldn't be surprised!)... I am actually coming into town tonight and thinking about the Carnitas Queretero barbacoa in my future...
high-end Mexican in El Paso?
Were you referring to Maria Chuchena when you mentioned an upscale restaurant in EP that had closed? I was never a fan.
JIm- I will do just about anything for a great meal but going to Juarez is not one of them. With the restaurants moving up from Mexico, stay in EP- you will have plenty of choices!!!
A Seabra Foods in Springfield?
I jut tried the Newark Chestnut Street location- wonderful! I was wary of the fresh meat and fish but I may have been unreasonable since they really did look fresh. Vegetables were not great looking. We did leave with a lot of packaged goods and a very reasonable non- EVOO. I definitely will be back...
Bar Breton to close Monday - Re-open as La Quenelle
I wasn't fond of those galettes- much better preparation elsewhere- though not in NY.
portuguese restaurants in newark
Way better was a comparative term. This is not a cuisine that I consider myself an expert in- but basic prep and presentation is what I am considering. I find the other places in the generic Spanish/Brazilian/ Portuguese bundle more about quantity than quality.
Help for Sunday Supper, Cold Day, Sunset Park Vicinity
My go to place is Tacos Matamoros. I particularly like the tacos but also anything with the "grilled" chicken that they have- especially the chilaquiles- which are way better than what I am used to in LA and Texas. What I miss is the roasted salsas- most of the salsas that I have had in NY are fairly "flat"....

Found a great olive tapenade on Staten Island- has a "parmigianny" taste which made it perfect to dress plain pasta. Almost like a pesto made of olives

I often get challenged on this but Mexican is not just Mexican. The regional Mexican food I eat in Dallas is not the same as I eat in Sunset Park.
Some of the Middle Eastern options- ie Lebanese and Turkish might be good- you may need a reservation for Tanoreen- even early.
What about Spartan Souvlaki?

My new favorite- Tony da Caneca- went yesterday for lunch. You won't stumble upon it- on a residential street but they have a lot. You never would imagine a white table clothed restaurant by the looks of the outside. The food was delicious and way better than any other ethnic meal that I have had in the Ironbound. And the service was terrific and attentive- and the prices were very reasonable- especially given that half of lunch went home with us.

I just had some with my dinner- it is one of our staples. Love the fact that they don't use soy sauce ( some do...)
Where to buy uncooked corned beef brisket?
I saw the same display at the Red Hook store yesterday- beautiful!
Where should we have ethnic food in Queens tonight? (baby and gluten-free friendly)
Sorry- the reason that I wasn't specific was because so many have been discussed on this board! I have Celiac disease and I just follow the threads based on the quality of the food. I do avoid cuisines that tend to use soy sauce- ie Peruvian. I probably wouldn't opt for Korean as suggested either.

Anything Mexican. Anything Indian. Lots Greek.
