Who do you follow on the Los Angeles board, and why?

He. In one of the old, old threads, we determined that EK was not a she.

Maude: September's Tomato Dinner

I know you asked msmd, but for our meal, we were seated at the counter and not by request--which turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Din Tai Fung - SCP waiting time!!

If you go 30-40 minutes before they open, you'll be in the first seating when they open.

Mr OCAnn & I have walked in, sat & ate @ the bar w/o the wait when we went in the evening.

First time in Japan (Opinion on my list of places to go to)

Wow...this is an awesome, comprehensive post with great replies. I'll be visiting next month, so this is really helpful! Thanks!

Yes, <$150/person...and definitely >$200/couple.

Mr OCAnn had a couple beers then we finished off with coffee & tea. Our bill was indeed just under $300.

When you factor in tax + 18% service + beverages, it will easily take you over $200.

EDIT: it will easily take you over $200/couple. =)

I think if they added bread service, their dinners would be more filling.

Yes, it was quite dark, but I think sitting at the counter helped with the lighting. ITA about the sizing...I gobbled the tortellini up in three bites while Mr OCAnn cut each piece into tiny quarters so he could savour every small bite!

What Tailback said; they do have several wines by the glass and about 10 beer options. They have soft drinks too; Mr OCAnn had a blanche de bruxelle beer and I stuck to my water.

Two-three ounces sounds about right. You could take 2-3 bites of each course, but we found ourselves taking more, smaller bites just to prolong the deliciousness. Oh, and they have a lovely selection of teas (and coffee drinks) to go with dessert!

So if you go, make sure you have a nice lunch prior and you should be fine (though we ended up splitting an In-n-Out cheeseburger on the long drive back to OC). Also, there are four counter seats that look into the kitchen--which we did not ask for but enjoyed very much. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did...we hope to go back for the truffle month! =)

Post-dinner sweets!

Maude: September's Tomato Dinner

A few nights ago, we had the tomato-centric dinner @ Maude. It was 9 courses (the take-home sweets will follow as a reply).

The dishes:
1. Tomato chips & tomato salsa. Both good individually & together.
2. Tomato heirloom salad.
3. Confit Ocean Trout w/tomato powder.
4. Clam? Tortellini.
5. Smoked Veal Tongue & Tomato Gratin
6. 16-hour Braised Short Ribs.
7. Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup
8. Ice Cream w/Wafer (the fruit @ the bottom was tart).
9. Semifreddo w/Green Tomato Sorbet.
** Menu + Bottle of Bloody Mary condiment (tomato vinegar)

The standouts, for me, were the trout, tortellini, smoked tongue, and short ribs.

I hadn't eaten all day (my mistake) and by the time I was done w/dinner, I was still a bit hungry. Otherwise, had I had b'fast or lunch, dinner would've been plenty.

Dinner + drinks + 18% service charge, for 2 = $300 (just under).

Parking in the near-adjacent structure is free the first 2-3 hours.

And actually, 30 minutes would've been sufficient today for immediate seating...but after that, it got crowded fast. When we left at 11:30, there was minimal outside queue to leave your ph#.

Shrimp fried rice, string beans, pot stickers, fried pork chop, the tofu/seaweed in vinegar dressing app, xlb and black sesame bun.

I would skip (in addition to the ones mentioned upthread) the red bean rice cake & pork rice bun (sticky rice).

L.A. Dish of the Month, August 2014: COCKTAILS and Bar Food

Pre-Midge Ure/Howard Jones/Tom Bailey show at The Greek, Mr OCAnn wanted to try Diablo Taco's micheladas. They make popsicles with the juices, spices, seasonings and serve it with beer. We had the cactus juice with an IPA and the yuzu with a Chinese beer. We tried the popsicle before we dropped it in the beer and I actually prefer the two separate rather than together. But OTOH, I don't know much about beer and haven't yet acquired the taste for flavoured beer or beer cocktails. Looks interesting though.

Pho vs. Ramen [moved from L.A. board]

As far as variety, if you're ever in the Greater Los Angeles area, you should go to Foo Foo Tei (in Hacienda Heights). It's 31 flavours of ramen; have a different one everyday for a month.

Here's an extensive review of FFT: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/5697...

And Keizo's review of ramen-a-day challenge on his page (former CHer & creator of the Ramen Burger): http://www.goramen.com/search/label/F...

Marche Moderne…what's happened?

I've never been a fan of Marche Moderne, except when they do their "pig head-to-toe" in October. They have a nice atmosphere, but the staff and food were always hit or miss for me (though Mr OCAnn, like many here, loved it). Hopefully, they'll continue to serve it up bc I do enjoy their version of Octoberfest.

Coming from LA - what to eat in San Diego?

I picked up some savoury pies from Betty's Pie Whole & two little sweet bites, which I soon realised was the former location of Elizabethan Desserts. I picked up the cowpoke, mule, chicken pot pie and meatball pie as gifts. The cowpoke is two fpieces or an order of 1 ($7) and so I stole one and ate it from the box. OMG...it was delicious, like homemade perfection. While not a huge fan of pulled BBQ anything (usu over sauced), this was flavourful and not overly messy (just enough meaty goodness). If the rest of the items taste as good as this, then this will be a CH favourite. All items look homemade. Next time I'm in the area, I'm bringing home a sampler for myself (I'm kicking myself for not doing so!). Thanks for the rec on this one!

EDIT: the mule is missing bc someone grabbed it before I could take a pic...and I scarfed down one of the cowpokes in a very unladylike manner.

DTF's blood orange boba martini: $13. Too sweet & overpriced (though the boba in alcohol combo was fun). Better to spend an extra $1 @ Cap Grille for the previously mentioned Stoli Doli just a few stores down @ South Coast Plaza.
