Carlsbad around Christmas

Not quite Carlsbad, but Solace and the Moonlight Lounge in Encinitas and Rimels in Cardiff offer great grub.

Ramen

Visiting from OC and had the tonkotsu shoyu ramen on a super windy day last week (enough to cause power outages in the area), so it was a great day for ramen. We also had the takoyaki (delish), chicken wings (a bit on the sweet side), geso karaage (delish), and onigiri (solid).

Will have to revisit to try yuzu shio ramen which sounds utterly interesting.

Local Spiny Lobster

We enjoyed our spiny lobster @ Rimel's in La Jolla (my go-to for the last dozen years). You get a choice of two sides for about $40 as pictured.

Santa Ana need rec

Capital Grille in nearby Costa Mesa/South Coast Plaza is currently offering a glass of Silver Oak cab and egg-topped wagyu burger with truffle fries for $25 in their bar.

There's also Pizzeria Ortica also in Costa Mesa: http://www.pizzeriaortica.com/menus/

Marche Moderne: Pig Head-to-Toe 3.0

I didn't see it on their website either, so that's when I called & emailed to ask about it. The email reply included a pic from last year's special (attached) along with October dates.

Marche Moderne: Pig Head-to-Toe 3.0

Just a heads-up for MM lovers: they'll be doing their Pig Head-to-Toe once again, but for one week only, Tue 10/22/13 - 10/29/13. It appears to be a repeat from last year (while my favourite was the first).

Chino Wayne

Just seeing this for the first time. My condolences to Wayne's family. I've not been a regular on CH the last couple years..and found this to be surprising and sad, esp when you spend years on this community. There's something about online personalities that seem eternal....

Really good homestyle Mexican in ORANGE COUNTY area (or nearby)

Depends what you want on your menu: El Farolito for carnitas (crispy-fied), Tlaquepaque for their enchiladas chili rellenos, & El Sabroso Grill for their tacos & ceviche.

Best Lobster Roll in Los Angeles area?

In OC, there's Slapfish in Huntington Beach off Beach Blvd. It's not on their menu, but if you ask for it, they'll make it. About $25.

Your Top 5 restaurants in downtown San Diego?

Does this still stand? I'll be in downtown SD in a month, staying @ the Omni.

I've been to JSix & liked it so much that we're thinking of going again. But after reviewing some of the other threads, our shortlist (in addition to JSix) now includes Cafe Chloe, Saltbox or Dobson's for dinner. We're leaning toward moderately priced (not expensive) dining for this visit.

Thoughts? Thank you!

EDIT: ps/ will have car, but prefer to walk.

Providence - Spring Chef's Menu: A Pictorial Essay

Throughout the month of June, they offer a roll-back special. This year, it's $80 for their five-course tasting. It's not on their website, but I called the restaurant to make sure (& made reservations).

Orance County Recommendations for Special Event

North OC = Costa Mesa, Newport, Huntington? In any case, sounds like you might need a banquet room from a hotel. If price is out of the equation, you might look into golf courses or maybe the Summit House in Fullerton (great view)...or other restaurants who're accustomed to wedding-type events. I was recently at the Spring Field Banquet Center also in Fullerton; the space is okay and the food is decent.

If you're willing to do Newport or Costa Mesa, there's always Mastro's.

North Orange County - Food Bermuda Triangle - Need Restaurant Recs

Nice list! +1 on Early Bird (one week I went 4x), Honda-ya & Bruxie. I prefer Kentro's Greek Kitchen to the Olive Pit and What's Up Men serves up a good bowl of chuuka soba (ramen) and kimchi fried rice. I've also started to frequent Tlaquepaque (also in Old Town Placentia) more frequently over El Farolito bc (1) there's less of a wait, (2) it's less gloppier/greasier and (3) their enchiladas & chili rellenos are better (though I prefer ElF's carnitas over T's). And for a mom & pop shop Taiwanese tea house w home cooked food, I head on over to Midastee on Imperial. For HH, we'll go to Yardhouse, but sometimes prefer the Olde Ship for the pub atmosphere.

Help! Need South Lake Tahoe (SLT) Recs

I apologise for reporting back late (there was a medical issue with family). We ended up cutting our trip quite short and had the opportunity to eat out twice for dinner: Edgewood and Kalani's.

Usually, when I ask for a recommendation, we follow thru (otherwise, why ask?), but it was an icy night on the road and wanted somewhere w/i a 1 mi radius which unfortunately knocked many of the recommended places off the list.

At Edgewood had the ravioli appetizer (surprisingly good), the salmon and the tbone steak special. All three items were steak-house good and better than most golf course food. Apparently, there's a great view which we didn't get to appreciate in the dead dark of winter.

At Kalani's (my favourite of the two) there were a lot of seafood and asian-inspired selections. I had my usual go-to: Chilean sea bass. We ordered many dishes and the food here was very, very flavourful.

Most likely, I would return to Edgewood for drinks to see the view I felt cheated out of...and to Kalani's for seafood. Hopefully, we'll return in April to try the restaurants which you so kindly recommended to the list--thank you for your help!

Help! Need South Lake Tahoe (SLT) Recs

It's been a looooooong while since I've been on CH and I'm back b/c I need help w/recommendations. As a long-time CHer, I did try a search for SLT, but the results were sparse and returned mostly NLT threads.

We'll be there for a few nights at the Marriott Grand Residence later this month so I expect to cook (with Safeway a block down) and eat out equally. I'll post pics & reports upon my return. We're open to foods of ALL kinds, prefer local/seasonal fare and hope to avoid the major chains. Thank you!

Best Pizza in Orange County?

PeV turned me off when I saw that their dough mixer was sitting on the floor, kneading the dough right next to the restroom.

Honda Ya to open in Fullerton

We were also there on Saturday at 18:45 and waited about 15 minutes, though there was no wait and only saw 65% capacity mid-week in May. As much as I disdain waits, I'm glad for the restaurant. I too enjoyed the food more here--not sure why; maybe it's the new interior and the proximity to my home. =) One drawback though, seems to be the beverage glasses & the tatami room tables; I saw three spills (all at different tables), including one at our own.

Food is served promptly, service is friendly and the cost reasonable. We're likely to be regulars here!

Best restaurants in/near Disneyland?

+1. We now only sit @ NR's Chef's Counter and order the Chef's Choice. It's not cheap, so we usually go twice/year and have never been disappointed. I'd put it in our top 3 for OC.

Best deal for Sushi (quality vs quantity) in OC? (either AYCE or a la carte)

I've been to Makino in Las Vegas/Premium Outlets; it's good for AYCE. They have the standards (tuna, yellowtail, salmon), maybe half dozen different rolls and lots of cooked Japanese, Chinese & Asian fusion dishes. This is usually where we end up when we're with other people in LV & can't decide where to eat. The curiosity factor might draw me in to the new Irvine location.

MORI SUSHI - DONT GET IT

I went there for dinner a couple weeks ago because we happened to be in the area. We sat at the counter, didn't eat copious amounts, and spent about $250 (incl tax & tip). While it was good/solid, it's not anything to rave about. For sushi/seafood, I'd rather spend that $$ @ Providence.

When to salt a steak? My research.

I had to resurrect this thread since we tried the pre-salt method for the second time to good results. Thank you to both Caroline & bkhuna. I think we'll continue to pre- and post-salt depending on the cut & thickness of the meat!

LQ@SK REVIEW....THE FINAL DAYS!

Like you, I loved our dishes; my favourite was the hamachi while Mr OCAnn preferred the albondigas & foie. Reading your post, I got to relive that night (thanks!). =)

And yes, jot, Highland Park sounds right. I had too much to drink to remember. =p
