Coming from LA - what to eat in San Diego?

OMG...the seafood looks like a seafood lover's wetdream...absolutely delectable! But the "Rodents" is a bit off-putting, but piques my dirty just enough.

Looks like I may have to do Betty's Whole Pie w/my friend and Seabasstropub another time w/Mr OCAnn. BTW, how does it compare to Kaito?

Thank you both (TOG &DD) for the above recommendations!

If you have ethnic recommendations, please list! There weren't a whole lot of past *recent* threads (IIRC), so it would most def help me when I'm in your neck of the woods (esp north county).

Why? Are they nasty or just dry?

$1 filet mignon sliders @ Morton's on filet mignon day. That was last Wed (08/13/14) and they were ever so delicious. We ordered plates by the dozen. Set reminder for next year!

Note: pic is from Morton's FB page; yeah, I know, it's not my own, but I didn't have the gumption to pull out my phone in front of business partners and tell them to wait until I took a pic. Aside from the greens that were served on the side, it looks the same.

I'll be visiting SD/north county in a few weeks, so this is timely! Thanks to the OP for the initial homework on the Mexican. So if not any of the above mentioned, where?

My quick research shows Urban Plates, Kitchen 1540, Prep Kitchen and Georges Modern. Other must-try lunch options further north up to O'side? Been to Kaito, Solace & the Moonlight Lounge, Fidel's. Thanks!

Sad...but thank you for posting. We went a handful of times early on, but it's quite a trek from where we are. Whatever they decide to pursue, I wish them lots of success.

Poke @ OC Costco (Tustin, The District)

So I took quick bites of the abalone ($20/lb), octopus ($13/lb) and smoked tuna salads ($8/lb) I picked up today. All three were just okay, with the octopus the clear winner (but all just really in the range of good). The abalone, unfortunately was a bit sour. The octopus was good, but the chunks were too small (perhaps to make it a bit less chewy), but there were too many ingredients for my preference (cilantro & ginger fighting for attention). And the smoked tuna salad (yogurt & mayo), while in the middle of the three, was solid, I realised that I'm not a big fan of it. But if you like smoked tuna, this might be the ticket.

Oh, they also pickle their ginger in-house. Quite the delicious potent stuff.

If you're going to DD, I'd stick to the nice selection of whole seafood or the poke salads.

Not yet, I'll put it on my shopping list!

Sashimi

Go to a Japanese market (Mitsuwa, Marukai, Nijiya) and buy for a lot less than you'd spend at any restaurant. Just make sure it's sashimi grade (usu accompanied by a small packet of wasabi) and not just any raw fish.

Poke @ OC Costco (Tustin, The District)

My Dry Dock poke ranged in size from a half to a full domino. The Costco poke were cubes (domino folded in half)--really too thick to be pleasant, but I guess I could cut it in half to make it easier to eat.

Flavour-wise, I'd go with the Costco version. If convenience is a factor (since DD is in my neck of the woods), I'd go w/DD. And when I went this morning, I didn't see any octopus salad, so thank you for the heads-up. That'll be next! =D

EDIT: FWIW, I ate the 1/2 pound salmon poke for b'fast. Knowing that it was in the work-fridge was just too tempting. Ahi poke will be tonight's app; though a quick tasting of it now didn't reveal an increase in flavour since this morning.

Poke @ OC Costco (Tustin, The District)

So I stopped by Dry Dock on the way to work this morning (they open @ 07:00). It's $14/lb for the ahi poke, $16/lb for the salmon. The label says it was packed today; I tasted them both and found flavouring to be good, but mild. I'll let them sit for a while and let it marinade...if I don't finish them in the next hour.

Poke @ OC Costco (Tustin, The District)

Didn't know that they carried ahi poke at Costo until I ran into one today at Costco at The District in Tustin. There were 4 varieties: shoyu, wasabi, spicy & limu. At $17-18/lb, we picked up the wasabi and spicy (pic 1 & pic 2, respectively). The Costco guys who rang up our purchases were raving about the spicy; personally I preferred the wasabi. These were Costco quality good, if pricey. The chunks were much larger than I prefer, but Mr OCAnn liked 'em hefty. Not sure if it's a special or a seasonal thing, so get them while they last!

Stoli Doli is pineapple infused vodka. Tastes like fresh pineapple juice w/a kick that gets you after you've finished the drink. It's sooooo good, that you forget how potent it is. It's a staple at all Cap Grilles. And while I don't imbibe often, this is one that I can never say no to.

No dole pineapple whip or syrup--just the two ingredients, Stoli vodka & Dole pineapples. I've made some at home, but Cap Grille's is much better. It's a must try for pineapple lovers!

I don't often partake in cocktails, but when I do, it's s Stoli Doli (@ Cap Grille). I often don't finish my beers, can usually finish a glass of wine (sometimes more), but will almost always have two Stoli Dolis. Kinda pricey @ $14 per, but so delicious...esp if you like pineapples.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

Picked up a bit of HD vanilla. I think McC's version last a longer finish; otherwise similar. Posting pics for comparison (colour list of ing).

EDIT: Mr OCAnn prefer HD which I think has a stronger custard flavour; I prefer McC's lighter touch.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

Hmmm...not necessarily. I wouldn't ever pick a caramel ice cream on its own and I'm really not sure if I like caramel ice cream (my go-tos are usu vanilla, chocolate, or Thriftys mint-n-chip), but their salted caramel chip is quite exquisite.

The salted caramel is one of my faves too. But it's $8 a pop at Ralph's.

EDIT: it's problematic bc I'll finish a pint in one sitting and buy another pint a cple days later & repeat.

They ship! But that would probably put it beyond the OP's price point. And they sell in stores in the Chicago area, with plans for world domination!

Which is the best vanilla ice cream?

As someone else mentioned, Breyer's used to be delicious and took an unfortunate downhill turn. So if you like that flavor, you might like my new favourite: McConnell's.

McConnell's is on the pricey side and can be found locally @ Ralph's or mail ordered:
http://www.mcconnells.com/

EDIT: Their ingredients for vanilla bean: Cream, Milk, Sugar, Non-Fat Milk Solids, Organic Egg Yolks, R.R. Lochhead® Vanilla, R.R. Lochhead® Vanilla Beans.
