What's your top 5 favorite places for lunch in OC?

In my neck of the woods (north OC):
- Mr Katsu/Honda-ya/What's Up Men (Japanese)
- El Farolito/Tlaquepaque/El Sabroso Grill (Mexican)
- Fuoco/Burger Parlour/Hopscotch/Kentro (Downtown Fullerton)
- Pho Olivia
- Costco (for hotdog)
- Early Bird Cafe

IIRC, Honda-ya has okonomiyaki.

Fried Chicken in Orange County?

Not a fan of Uncle Lou's flavour which was a bit (not overly) vinegary for me. Crispy & juicy for sure...but I like my chicken savoury, not acidy (even if it's light handed). Looking forward to trying the PFC though!

Fried Chicken in Orange County?

I 2nd Mrs Bea's (Harbor Blvd/Imperial Hwy) and 2nd Early Bird (EB). I love EB's fried chicken so much that I'll take it in a sandwich form if it's the only way to get it.

To round off my top 3 in OC would be The Chicken Box, up the street off Harbor on Whittier Blvd (La Habra) for their broasted chicken. That's some pretty darned good chicken, crispy skin, juicy stuff.

Looking for a nice dinner in North OC area.

The Cellar in downtown Fullerton: good (not great) food, great service, nice dark atmosphere.

Poke @ OC Costco (Tustin, The District)

They had them the wknd prior (Sun 11/02/14). When we asked about it, the Costco guy said it was such a popular item, that they expect to carry it for as long as possible, but it may stop without notice....

Recommendations for great Japanese food & sake tasting for party of 12-14 in Los Angeles or North Orange County

Honda-ya in Fullerton? Not sure what their sake menu is like, but their Japanese food is pretty darned good.

Early Bird, Fullerton: Fried Chicken Dinner, 1 Nite Only

This is the third annual, though the first two were held in August or September (IIRC).

No Legos on our side. =)

Sure, let's plan on the free beer & splitting 2 buckets of chicken (1 spicy, 1 not spicy) next year...LOL.

We were the two-top behind your son. =)

Ya know, we opted for the plain fried chicken and wished that we got the spicy. Either way, it was beautifully fried, even if the dinner version was different from their morning one. Hopefully, they'll continue w/their annual chicken dinners and add other dinners throughout the year!

After all of my hype, I was a touch disappointed. You're right about their coating not being crisp...esp compared to last year or their regular fried chicken offerings (w/their waffles or in their sandwich). Mr OCAnn loved the pb/banana/chocolate/bacon milkshake too! (I'm not a fan of shakes, but found it enjoyable.) The sides were good...our favourite was the mac & cheese (and the bacon in the shake)!

Were you sitting near the front door? Lots of families there w/kids last night!

Correct, EB is usually open for b'fast & lunch. Dinners are a delicious rarity.

where can i find puerto nuevo style lobster?

I have to go to SD (Rimel's Rotisserie) to get mine PN style (see pic). King's Fish House *may* have it, but dunno if it's PN style.

I don't remember the cost; maybe around $40? But for anyone who likes MM or pork, it's delicious!

Early Bird, Fullerton: Fried Chicken Dinner, 1 Nite Only

Early Bird is my favourite b'fast spot, beating Break of Dawn due to proximity (otherwise, it'd be a tie). They don't have dinners often, but when they do, it's worth attending. For one night only, they're having a Fried Chicken Dinner w Elvis on Thu 10/16/14. Elvis aside, their fried chicken is my favourite, bettering CH faves The Playground in SA and the ubiquitous Ralph's. Remember, one night only! =)

Marche Moderne: Pig Head-to-Toe 2014

MM just announced their pig head-to-toe for this year, again only running for one week 10/23/14 - 10/30/14. Make your reservations now! =)

L.A. Dish of the Month, August 2014: COCKTAILS and Bar Food

If you have a waterfront view, then yes the environment improves the experience. In general, I find Mastro's OC "sexier" than the regular Mastro's.

do you eat American style or European style?

do you eat American style or European style?

I was thinking about the US v European ways of eating last night. My hubby thinks it's affectation when Americans eat European style (he calls me a snob when I eat), but yet it's the way I was raised (bi-coastal/multi-cultural), I think I'm more acutely aware of cultures and manners, whereas Mr OCAnn is the more typical American who places more value on comfort and doing whatever feels good or comfortable than following proper rules and mores. Look at us in general: kids address adults by their first names, we dress casual to work, and the uncouth leave their covers & ball caps on during the national anthem. We're a casual society who place more emphasis/importance on me than we...and our manners are a reflection of that.

And likely, ppl didn't point it out to you bc they (1) either didn't know or (2) didn't want to appear rude.

Just my $0.02. =)

I know you asked msmd, but for our meal, we were seated at the counter and not by request--which turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Din Tai Fung - SCP waiting time!!

If you go 30-40 minutes before they open, you'll be in the first seating when they open.

Mr OCAnn & I have walked in, sat & ate @ the bar w/o the wait when we went in the evening.

Yes, <$150/person...and definitely >$200/couple.

Mr OCAnn had a couple beers then we finished off with coffee & tea. Our bill was indeed just under $300.

When you factor in tax + 18% service + beverages, it will easily take you over $200.

EDIT: it will easily take you over $200/couple. =)

Yes, it was quite dark, but I think sitting at the counter helped with the lighting. ITA about the sizing...I gobbled the tortellini up in three bites while Mr OCAnn cut each piece into tiny quarters so he could savour every small bite!

Maude: September's Tomato Dinner

What Tailback said; they do have several wines by the glass and about 10 beer options. They have soft drinks too; Mr OCAnn had a blanche de bruxelle beer and I stuck to my water.

Two-three ounces sounds about right. You could take 2-3 bites of each course, but we found ourselves taking more, smaller bites just to prolong the deliciousness. Oh, and they have a lovely selection of teas (and coffee drinks) to go with dessert!

So if you go, make sure you have a nice lunch prior and you should be fine (though we ended up splitting an In-n-Out cheeseburger on the long drive back to OC). Also, there are four counter seats that look into the kitchen--which we did not ask for but enjoyed very much. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did...we hope to go back for the truffle month! =)
