GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

Picked up a bit of HD vanilla. I think McC's version last a longer finish; otherwise similar. Posting pics for comparison (colour list of ing).

EDIT: Mr OCAnn prefer HD which I think has a stronger custard flavour; I prefer McC's lighter touch.

Hmmm...not necessarily. I wouldn't ever pick a caramel ice cream on its own and I'm really not sure if I like caramel ice cream (my go-tos are usu vanilla, chocolate, or Thriftys mint-n-chip), but their salted caramel chip is quite exquisite.

The salted caramel is one of my faves too. But it's $8 a pop at Ralph's.

EDIT: it's problematic bc I'll finish a pint in one sitting and buy another pint a cple days later & repeat.

My favourite ice cream! Good to know that there'll be one @ GCM. In the meantime, I'll have to get mine from Ralph's.

Which is the best vanilla ice cream?

They ship! But that would probably put it beyond the OP's price point. And they sell in stores in the Chicago area, with plans for world domination!

Now, now. He did say "in my book."

And did you mean choosing his own *definition* (instead of "terminology")? =)

Which is the best vanilla ice cream?

As someone else mentioned, Breyer's used to be delicious and took an unfortunate downhill turn. So if you like that flavor, you might like my new favourite: McConnell's.

McConnell's is on the pricey side and can be found locally @ Ralph's or mail ordered:
http://www.mcconnells.com/

EDIT: Their ingredients for vanilla bean: Cream, Milk, Sugar, Non-Fat Milk Solids, Organic Egg Yolks, R.R. Lochhead® Vanilla, R.R. Lochhead® Vanilla Beans.

L.A. Co-Dishes of the Month, July 2014: FRIED CHICKEN (and Chicken Fried) and FROZEN DAIRY-BASED DESSERT PRODUCTS

Broasted chicken from the Chicken Box in La Habra. Great crispy skin, slight flavour throughout, and moist meat (all dark meat) if a bit salty.

Of the five I've had these past couple weeks, I'd rank them:
1. Early Bird
2. What's Up Men/Chicken Box (tie, WUM for flavour, CB for crispiness)
4. Wing Stop
5. Ralph's (by a distance)

L.A. Co-Dishes of the Month, July 2014: FRIED CHICKEN (and Chicken Fried) and FROZEN DAIRY-BASED DESSERT PRODUCTS

We had cold noodles/hiyashi chuuka. Noodles are good cold and the sauce was ok (not standard but on the creamy side). When we've had hot chuuka soba, we enjoyed the noodles & the broth. We've not tried the other dishes bc the chuuka soba (hot) broth is compelling. Gyoza is good too.

While everyone has their favourites (ours would be Foo Foo Tei, Santouka & Ramen California back in the day), WUM does the trick when we want something close.

Edit: FWIW, the last couple times I've been there (months apart) there were quite a few Japanese speaking patrons.

Thank you for the heads up on the LA rub; tried it last night and it was as you said: flavourful & crispy. Loved it! Now I have two favourites there, that & the garlic parm! =)

Who do you follow on the Los Angeles board, and why?

Ah, thanks. When I was on more frequently a few years ago, a few CHers (from other boards) died due to age, illness, etc. This is a nice community and a combination of factors (including those deaths) lead me to take a break.

Anyway, I'm glad he left due to exile instead of the other. Maybe the mods will let him back after a good timeout.

Orange County: your list of current top steak houses?

Their caesar, while extremely simple, is utterly delicious with little anchovy pieces. I didn't care for the arancinis; they were underflavoured and a bit mushy. Everything else is okay-good, but nothing stand out.

On the mains, hubby also likes the roasted chicken while I lean towards the branzino. On the pasta side, Mr OCAnn likes the lasgana & pappardelle while I prefer their linguini (over their angel hair). When Mr OCAnn orders a protein, he'll usually ask for a side of simple pasta (butter & cheese).

During prime time, there's usually a small line to get in; I've been able to use OpenTable during the short walk from the parking lot to the restaurant to secure a table skipping the queue altogether.

We'll usually do a date night Monday or penny wine Wednesday. And if it's not too hot, the best seats are on the patio for people watching.

I'm not naming names since you can check my profile for that. But as a former, long-time CHer just returning after a couple years off CH, I follow those who provide really thoughtful, informative & balanced reviews (whether I agree or not). =)
