OCAnn's Profile
Best restaurants in/near Disneyland?
+1. We now only sit @ NR's Chef's Counter and order the Chef's Choice. It's not cheap, so we usually go twice/year and have never been disappointed. I'd put it in our top 3 for OC.
Best deal for Sushi (quality vs quantity) in OC? (either AYCE or a la carte)
I've been to Makino in Las Vegas/Premium Outlets; it's good for AYCE. They have the standards (tuna, yellowtail, salmon), maybe half dozen different rolls and lots of cooked Japanese, Chinese & Asian fusion dishes. This is usually where we end up when we're with other people in LV & can't decide where to eat. The curiosity factor might draw me in to the new Irvine location.
MORI SUSHI - DONT GET IT
I went there for dinner a couple weeks ago because we happened to be in the area. We sat at the counter, didn't eat copious amounts, and spent about $250 (incl tax & tip). While it was good/solid, it's not anything to rave about. For sushi/seafood, I'd rather spend that $$ @ Providence.
When to salt a steak? My research.
I had to resurrect this thread since we tried the pre-salt method for the second time to good results. Thank you to both Caroline & bkhuna. I think we'll continue to pre- and post-salt depending on the cut & thickness of the meat!
LQ@SK REVIEW....THE FINAL DAYS!
Like you, I loved our dishes; my favourite was the hamachi while Mr OCAnn preferred the albondigas & foie. Reading your post, I got to relive that night (thanks!). =)
And yes, jot, Highland Park sounds right. I had too much to drink to remember. =p

LQ@SK REVIEW....THE FINAL DAYS!
I was at the first seating and I think they said they were going to Eagle Rock, Echo Park or another relatively nearby two-word name area. ;p
Review: Cafe Schober, Zeughauskeller, Haus Hiltl | Zurich
Unfortunately, there weren't many reviews on Zurich eateries before we went so we asked expats where to go and were happy with their suggestions.
CAFE SCHOBER, like many restaurants in Zurich, has been around for over a century. We stopped by for some house-made hot chocolate while walking around the old district on our way to visit Fraumunster & Grossmunster. Good hot chocolate, but not quite as decadent as the one we found at Florence, Italy's Gilli. Worth a stop for the old, cutely decorated interior.
ZEUGHAUSKELLER is a great place for lunch, with huge (for Swiss) portions. If you don't have a reservation, time your visit carefully as you can hit the line which goes out the door. Prices are reasonable (for Switzerland). Most sausage dishes come with a delicious potato salad. Make sure you have a beer too.

HAUS HILTL is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Zurich. While we ordered off the menu, the better idea was probably to hit the buffet so you could sample many of their offerings. Moderate/pricey, it's worth a visit if you like veggies. Swiss Air's vegetarian dishes are made by Hiltl.

Everything we ate, was so very, very good. Even the tap water (compared to Southern California) was delicious--better than most of the bottled versions.
Maestro's - first visit tomorrow night - any first-timer tips for me?
I've also notice no change at either the Costa Mesa or Newport locations; in fact, I was recently at both in the last two months and found the food & service to still be super.

Anniversary weekend at St Regis Monarch Beach
I'd put Stonehill Tavern as my top 3 in OC, with the other one being Napa Rose (only @ the Chef's Counter ordering the Chef's menu) and the third spot undetermined....
Congrats & thank you for reporting back!

ISO Anniversary dinner spot for late TONIGHT
Not quite chowish, but keeping your $ constraints in mind, there's always Roy's. They have a 3-course prix fixe (w/chic & hangar steak options). Food is good (nothing to write home about) and service even better.

I recently took some friends to the Tustin Honda-ya (other locations in Little Tokyo & City of Industry). Lots of fun tapas style plates; for five who ate well, it only cost us $120 (pre tip). Very fun evening w/very solid food. Getting a seat, late weekday night shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Summit House in Fullerton has a daily 3-course prix fixe for $40 ($20 prime rib Wednesdays), which includes their prime rib (my sister loves it, I find it okay, but I adore their creamed corn). Pretty setting, weird waitress uniforms.

Foodie spending 4 nights in Seattle- What do you think?
I like Serious Pie too, but would highly recommend the happy hour where you get the greatest bang for your buck.
Another Tom Douglas restaurant to try is Lola's for breakfast (get theTom's Big B'fast if you like octopus).

Dining Solo in OC
The dining room is good for dining solo too...esp with the bench seats along the wall.

ECCO is good, but my preference runs toward Old Vine @ the Camp.

Crush, S&S or Tilth?
Thank you all for your good tips. We had dinner tonight at Sitka & Spruce...and I was pleasantly surprised by the eclectic mix of great food, casual atmosphere in semi-shared space within a building (not knowing what to expect, it wasn't the easiest find) and quite a few people trying to get a table sans reservations.
What we had:
- WA state Pinot Gris (dry & crisp & refreshing on this warm day)
- spinach panini/sandwich
- La Push king salmon, raw (just the right amount of unctuousness)
- asparagus (cooked, but served crisp!)
- cheese plate (wheat brioches w/Brie & honey)
- very light & lovely beignets w/choc sauce & creme fraiche
- Stumptown americano & cappuccino
Everything was fresh, flavorful and delicious. All for $60 (pre-tip)! It was a fun, relaxed dinner with great, thoughtful service. What I love about this place is that the menu changes with the season, so each visit can be something new. Thank you all again for your recommendations!
Torontonian coming for a short visit - approve?
I'm flying into SEA in a couple days and my friend is picking me up late...I almost want to convince her that I can take the rail into downtown and walk the few blocks to Lola just so I can have Tom's Big B'fast. I love octopus in the morning!
Five Guys Burgers (Los Angeles) - New locations Planned?
And those peanut shells are strewn all over the floor...
Favorite whole fish dishes?
Spanish mackeral @ Sushi Momo. If you ask for two orders, you get four pieces of sushi, followed by the head & bones (intact) fried (and cracker-like).

Most delicious gelato--Grom Malibu -- gelato made the old fashioned way
My thoughts exactly regarding location! I asked them why Malibu and not Third Street (or elsewhere). The staff mentioned that the owners wanted the cachet of Malibu. Interestingly, they brought a number of staff from Milan to work here.
Most delicious gelato--Grom Malibu -- gelato made the old fashioned way
Went today and had the cream & mint and the crema di Grom (after sampling quite a few); both were extremely luscious and delicious. While I understand the ingredients and methods to be the same, the gelato here seemed much creamier than I remember the Italian Grom to be. I was also surprised at how empty it was inside. All in all a fun visit.
BTW, we asked about the hot chocolate; it's only offered during winter. They said they want to replicate the complete Grom experience just like their stores in Italy and would be doing as those store do (seasonal items)....

And don't forget their signature warm butter cake!
Five Guys Burgers (Los Angeles) - New locations Planned?
And there's a Five Guys near CSU Fullerton on the S/E corner of Chapman & St College.
