KC Burnt Ends Smackdown
Maybe I’m weird. I like my burnt ends charred, chewy or crunchy. Almost inedible to some, but this is where the flavor is. Where’s the best place for burnt ends in this style? I’ve read the threads and have been to Jack Stack’s at the Freight House (best so far), LCs, two Smokestacks (north KC & Wornall Road), and Arthur Bryant’s. Oklahoma Joe’s doesn’t even list burnt ends on its online menu and it appears Danny Edwards closes before I’ll get to town.
Perhaps my mind’s playing tricks on me, exaggerating how good burnt ends used to be in the "good old days" of Jake Edwards and the Smokestack on south Highway 71.
Thanks in advance.
Kansas City BBQ-Near MCi Airport
There's also a Smokestack, off 152, I believe, maybe a mile west of I-35.
Anyone from Springfield, MO here?
No clue. I hang out at Steak & Shake. Search the board for "cashew" and see what you get. I'm curious, too.
OKC
OK, you're a Yankees' fan. That's allowed in moderation in Oklahoma since the Mick came from there. Look for his statue outside Bricktown Ballpark.
OKC is big on onionburgers. That's probably the area's biggest contribution to cuisine. Check Roadfood.com for specific places. Mostly in El Reno.
The Cattlemen's Steakhouse in the Stockyards DIstrict is a classic, dark-paneled place where cowboys and oilmen "do bidness."
Plenty of other threads featuring OKC.
Someone named "sodagirl" might be interested in the new Pops place (in or near Edmond, I believe) that supposedly sells billions of kinds of soda.
BBQ in Kansas City
This mirrors my only LC experience. I'd read raves about them on this board, but I felt the burnt ends were dry and tasteless. If convenience stores sold burnt ends, this is what they'd be like. I was also disappointed with my last two trips to Smokestack in NE KC near I-35. I don't think my memory's playing tricks on me, exaggerating how good burnt ends used to be, because I felt Jack Stack's in Midtown came close to living up the "good old days" of Jake Edwards and the Smokestack on south Highway 71.
Anyone from Springfield, MO here?
I frequent Springfield. It's gotten some mention here. Something about a unique way cashew chicken is made there, I believe.
Downscale Grub in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Etc.
Thank you, folks. Have hit Peggy's and Lucky Wishbone and may repeal my no-cloth-napkins rule to go to Club Paris.
Downscale Grub in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Etc.
Howdy, all. I'm looking for old-fashioned diners, drive-ins and cafes in Anchorage, Fairbanks and along the highway between the two. Burgers and fried chicken. Places that have cloth napkins need not apply.
The atmosphere is as important as the food. Someone on one of these boards referred to
the Lucky Wishbone as "old Anchorage." That's what I seek. From what I've read, the
Arctic Roadrunner seems to be down my alley, too. Which of its two locations is older?
Any comments on these places or on Peggy's Airport Cafe, Downtown Deli or on any joint
my research may have missed?
Thanks in advance.
Nevada Mo
The fried-chicken place is probably either Chicken Mary's (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g38993-d541631-Reviews-Chicken_Mary_s-Pittsburg_Kansas.html) or Chicken Annie's (http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=4524), both in southeast Kansas.
The White Grill is indeed a diner, maybe too small to have tables. I don't remember.
Yep, I'm surprised to see Nevada on here, too.
Late-Night Coffeehouses in Anchorage & Fairbanks
Howdy, all. I'm a Midwestern hound visiting Alaska and seeking a coffeehouse in each city open until at least 11 pm, with wireless Internet. Coffee quality is not a big issue since I'm more of a tea drinker. I just need a quirky place to hang out and get stuff done. Thanks in advance.
Funky food places between Chicago--KC
Yes, it is Moscow. According to the Muscatine Journal, the Cove's owners closed the place when they moved out of state. It is for sale.
Nebraska & Iowa - close to Interstate 80
I second the Hamburg. The Bread Garden has good food, but the new location has as much aesthetic appeal as an airport departure lounge.
The Best Restaurants in Tulsa
Legends on S. Memorial is the least mediocre of a mediocre lot.
Disclaimer #1: I lived in KC and S Texas so my standards are high.
Disclaimer #2: I'm strictly a brisket guy and haven't tried anything else.
Have not yet gone to Albert G's.
Breakfast in Cedar Rapids/Iowa City?
Is Lou Henri's strictly a breakfast place? When I pass by in the afternoon and evening, it always appears closed.
Regional Treats?
Maid-Rite and its loose-meat sandwiches in Iowa. I suppose you can get those elsewhere, just not under the Maid-Rite name.
Runza in Nebraska. Their big thing is the oven-stuffed sandwiches.
Both are small chains.

Regional Treats?
In KC, burnt ends.
I'm not aware of places outside the Oklahoma City that serve onion burgers.
Drive-ins with carhops?
Yeah, we have an original A&W, with carhops, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Des Moines Update
Has anyone mentioned Maid-Rite yet? Not my thing, but if you want to try something local...
Bob, this is a bit off-topic, but I found In and Out to be overrated.
Des Moines Update
Burnt ends are nothing with which you need to concern yourself in Des Moines. They are the part of the brisket that's considered too done and is cut away and not served, except in Kansas City. If there are other places on Planet Earth that serve them, I am not aware of those places. But I search on. And I dream.
Lawton/Stillwater, OK
Passed by Hideaway. If I ever return to Stillwater, I may try it. Thanks, all.
One BBQ Meal in KC Can't Decide b/w LC's and Jack Stack
No. They were cubes. Maybe it's a question of the qualities I prefer in burnt ends. I like them chewy, crunchy or charred, perhaps something no other human being would eat.
Lawton/Stillwater, OK
I read the post about the hamburgers at Meer's Store & Restaurant near Lawton, but that's the only info. on this board about either town. Can anyone enlighten me as to steakhouses or diners in those places?
Thank you.
An Expat’s Dining Survival Guide to Tulsa
Is Weber's open for the season, or did it ever close?
One BBQ Meal in KC Can't Decide b/w LC's and Jack Stack
Yeah, that was my opinion of LC's, though I only tried the burnt ends. Left wondering what the fuss was about. Should give 'em another try, but felt JS far better. You're right. The beans are great.
Iowa City
Dogs are welcome at Dane's on the west side. Each dog gets its own small dish of soft-serve.
Good BBQ Place Near KC Airport
The Smoke Stack (http://www.thestackbbq.com/) is near I-35 east of the airport. 8250 N Church Rd, 816-781-7822.
