Good bakery in New York?
Almondine Bakery in Brooklyn has has the best French Baguettes.
http://www.almondinebakery.com/
It's easy to get there on the subway from Manhattan and there are other interesting places nearby. A short walk will get you to The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory on the East River where you can sit and enjoy your baguette with some excellent ice cream or a cup of coffee. From there you can take in a great view of lower Manhattan.

Anybody remember TREAT chips in NYC?
This was a local NYC brand only available in small wax paper bags at delis a long time ago. I remember them as the best and cleanest tasting ones I ever had. The name was taken over by a big snack company who put their own over salted, too greasy chips in bags with the TREAT name. Never eat them after that and the name was dropped.
Bass Ale - The Horror
This has happened with so many other imported brews in the past. They use local water and brewing equipment, truck it to your local market or pub but charge like it was sourced and transported across the ocean. Thankfully there are now so many wonderful local micro brews available that there's not need to get these imposters.
New gluten free ale in NYC
The Heartland Brewery in New York City just started brewing their first gluten free ale. It's a seasonal brew called Good Grain. It's made with sorghum and has a alc/vol. of 5.5%. It's available in bottles at all of their locations and on tap at some locations. I had a mug of it and found it very tasty. If you have to go gluten free and miss your beer/ale, give this a try.
Trader Joe's Box Wine
Anyone try either one of TJ's new 3 liter box wine? $9.99 here in New York.
Riverpark?
We had a great meal there during Restaurant Week earlier this year. I had a clear chicken soup with root vegetables. Arctic Char and for dessert two kinds of sherbet. Really delicious. The service was first class.
Want to buy unique cookie cutters
Troll your local thrift stores. It may take a while but eventually you'll get lucky. You'd be surprised at what interesting kitchen gadgets turn up there but you have to be persistent. And the prices can't beat.
LAnnan on University Place @ 13th St.?
Walked by there today at lunch time and there was a sign on the door saying, "Sorry we're closed." There's no answer on their phone at dinner time tonight. Are they renovating or permanently closed?
Soup that isn't too salty?
I like soup but most places use way too much salt. They appear to believe that the sodium standard set by canned soup is what people want. Good cooking skill and good ingredients makes the addition of extra salt unnecessary but most places take the easy way out and load up the salt. So where can I get a good bowl of soup in Manhattan that won't give me more that 100% of a day's sodium?
Calphalon Unison Nonstick
I been using a new Calphalon Unison nonstick 10” omelette pan for a while now and it's the best nonstick pan I've had. I had older Calphalon nonstick pas that started sticking after a little use but this new surface it very different. After four months of use it's still releasing food like it did on day one. A big improvement. Anybody else having experience with Unison?
Bob Kramer Knives
So you enter a lottery and if you "win" you get the right to buy a knife for $6000. +
P.T. Barnum would love this. Next up, raffle to buy a bridge in Brooklyn.
HEARTBREAK heart's broken?
Walked by HEARTBREAK on 2nd. avenue in the East Village and saw it was closed for renovations. It's been open less than a year. Anybody knows what happening here?

Trouble posting photos
Yes I'm running the latest version of Firefox but I don't think that should make a difference. I posted many pictures before without any problems and I see that other Hounds had a similar problem when trying to post pictures.
Trouble posting photos
I'm going to try to post a 20K jpg. photo with this reply to see if the problem has been fixed.
Cuisinart replacement blade question
I have the original Cuisinart DLC-8E (made in Japan) and have to get a replacement blade. The DLC-8 shredding medium blade's fixed stem is starting to crack. The disk is five and three quarters inches in diameter. Can I use one of the newer blades that has a removable stem? And where is a good place to get these parts?
Does anybody go to Chinatown anymore?
I haven't been there in years but would you like to know what I'd go there again? American Cantonese food. chicken chow mein with crispy noodles, egg drop soup, spare ribs and lots of overly sweeten tea from the warm memories of my childhood family outings. Yes I know there's all those new regional cuisines there but none of them can ever evoke the those warm old emotions. There's food that you taste with your mouth and there's food that you taste with your heart, the latter being being the more powerful one.

Home Cooking in Message Boards. A picture of something I prepared.
what are the best potatoes to bake?
My favorite are Idaho potatoes. I look for medium sized firm ones with little to no blemishes on them. Bake at 400 degrees for about an hour (gas oven). When done I wrap them with a kitchen towel and rolled them to loosen the insides before cutting them open.
Trouble posting photos
I tried to add a picture to my post and each time I got the message: "Photo Validation failed: Content type is not a recognized type of file."
I've added pictures in the past without any problem so why can't I now? I tries several different formats and none worked.
Good pizza near Atlantic Beach?
Looking for some good pizza near Atlantic Beach or on the way to Manhattan.
Beecher's Cheese store in NYC?
Was there yesterday too and missed the 50% off deal. Did see them giving out "samples" of their signature cheese in quarter inch sized cubes, seemed pretty cheesy for opening day.

Sweet Purple Potatoes
Sorry about the confusion. I stopped by Healthway farm today and got more Inca Gold potatoes. this time I baked them instead of boiled and the were still outstanding; tasty, creamy and just moist enough.
Sweet Purple Potatoes
Healthway Farm from Highland, New York. They're on the west side of Union Square Greenmarket between 15th and 16th streets. Only there Monday. They have a very interesting selection of potatoes most at one dollar a pound. Last week I tried the Inca Gold ones, two dollars a pound because the seed is much more expensive but well worth it. Try some you'll probably be back for more.

Guinness at cellar temperature on tap anywhere in New England??
I believe that Guinness in bottles here in the US comes from and is made in Canada. Are the kegs only from Ireland?
Bay leaves, to eat or not?
I've always heard that your have to remove bay leaves after preparing food, before they can be eaten. They never soften and could possibly get stuck in a person throat and injure them. But I've been served restaurant food containing intact bay leaves. So what's a cook to do?
Best way to clean your knives
Amen. To quote Mario Freud, "A knife is just a knife. Now cigars, that's something else."
TOTALE, new wood fired oven pizza place
Sad to report Totale is no more. Windows have been papered since last month. Too bad I liked them and the price was a great deal but with their own dollar slice joint a few doors west they were their own competition.
