How Often Do You Use Recipes?

Ah, I just saw those black bean brownies on Pinterest! Definitely piqued my interest. I'll try it out sometime in the very near future and let you know how they are! I've heard good things!

How Often Do You Use Recipes?

I think so. I think I just need a little more patience when it comes to measuring ingredients. I just hate dirtying all my bowls, pans, mixers, and measuring utensils when I feel as if I can throw it all together in a bowl and mix it with the good ol' wooden spoon. Patience is a virtue!

And I'm always trying to make recipes healthier by substituting whole wheat flour, using applesauce in place of half the fat, etc. Unfortunately, it doesn't always go too well.

Gotta get those homemade cookies somehow! I figure the more baking I do, the better I'll be at it and the more I'll enjoy it. Not sure if that's holding true. I can bake the basic cookies and brownies with no problem, but when it comes to meringue...

Every successful batch of baked goods is like a beacon of hope among a large sea of botched ones!

Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?

Not gonna lie, I do crave some "banana" sausages once and a while (what I called them when I was younger)....used to eat them on a sandwich sliced lengthwise with miracle whip and tomato on white bread.

Used to eat olive loaf as well as liverwurst...haven't had either in ages! The liverwurst I used to eat as a child was square shaped and had that odd ring of fat around the edges.

Dinner in Kearney, NE?

I ate at Wild Rice a couple times before Suwannee's opened. It was a little on the pricier side, but the portions are pretty darn decent and the presentation is nice. Suwannee's I think is owned by the same people or the same people owned Wild Rice at some point? Either way, both are great (though I asked for the spiciest pad see ew and I didn't find it to be very spicy)!

I only wish people (aka my parents) would be a little more open about trying something different. I'll have to drag them there next time I'm in town!

Dinner in Kearney, NE?

Yes, though I'm not entirely sure how as it doesn't seem like they get many customers at all. Last time I went, the only other people there was the owner's family (I'm assuming). Sushi is mediocre, overpriced, and underportioned, but it's pretty much the only place in town that offer it (though King's Buffet has a small selection of sushi on the buffet). The set up is a bit...strange. The first time I walked it, I felt like I had walked through the back door.

I did have their veggie tempura with miso soup once. It was okay, but I think the prices overshadow the quality. It's a nice sentiment, having a Japanese restaurant in small town Nebraska...unfortunately, I think that may have been their mistake.

Condiments and Eggs

Sriracha! Mayo and/or mustard is good on a fried egg sandwich. I also like soy sauce on scrambled (or hard boiled soy and tea eggs).

ALDI Stores: Quality Products at Deep Discount??

I actually live right next to an Aldi's...personally, I love it!

A gallon of milk (Skim, 2%, or Vit D) is always under $3. They always have great deals on fresh produce! I've gone several times to find 99 cent pineapples and 29 cent avocados. Their spices are also quite cheap...99 cents for an entire bottle, affordable extra virgin olive oil, 99 cent tortillas.

I wasn't a big fan of their knockoff Oreos though. I have noticed that they've started carrying Fage yogurt (about $2.29 for a tub of 0%) and they also have Kefir.

That reminds me, my mom would also take leftover mashed potatoes, beat in a couple eggs, add salt and pepper, then fry them up in a pan with chopped up hot dogs. Not gonna lie, but I do crave it once in a while! Good with ketchup and mustard. (:

Peanut Butter -- how do you eat it (and on what kinds of different foods)?

In fudge, a spoonful in a bowl of cornflakes (or most any cereal) with milk, mixed with maple syrup on bread, spooned over vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of maple syrup, in chili, on grilled cheese with pickles (sounds like pregnancy food...not pregnant, I swear).

Veggie Delite on Parmesan Oregano, pepper jack, everything except olives (light on the jalapenos), salt and pepper with extra light mayo (or vinegar and oil).

Dinner in Kearney, NE?

Reviving this dead thread for the future Kearney-bound. I'm from Kearney, so I'll recommend some of my favorites...Suwannee Thai is top notch ($8-$10/person), The Cellar, Pane Bello (some say it's a knock off Panera's but I really like it), Hunan's (usually packed, but affordable and decent Chinese food), Nick's Gyros (not exactly gourmet, but it's good for what it is...Americanized greasy "Greek" food), El Potrero, French Cafe, Delight Donuts (right off the interstate...get there early for fresh donuts before they run out!), The Spaghetti Shop (the pasta is mediocre, but I go for the garlic bread), Big City Burrito (about $6 for a huge burrito...I always get the potato with their spiciest salsa).

original Valentine gift for my girlfriend?

I think the originality of a gift is based largely on your girlfriend's personality and likes/dislikes. I must say though, it would be a bit endearing to bake her brownies or make a nice dinner (together, even) rather than buying a box of chocolates or taking her out (imo).

How Often Do You Use Recipes?

When I'm cooking, I'll sometimes refer to a recipe as a base and change it based on what I have on hand or what I feel like throwing in. When I'm baking (which I hate), I TRY to follow the recipe exactly, but I never do because I'm not a fan of measuring!

Is There Any Commonplace Dish You've Never Eaten?

There's one that has been sitting in my fridge for well over 6 months that I got for free. Never had the impulse to actually drink it...even during those countless all-night cram sessions! Pepsi > energy drinks.

Have you ever "trained" yourself to eat something?

I used to HATE cheese when I was younger, but now I love it! Also, I used to hate sushi (wasn't a big fan of the dried seaweed), but now it's one of my favorite foods. (:

Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good

Pickle soup (just an odd combination...but it's delicious!), a dollop of peanut butter in my cereal, peanut butter mixed with maple syrup on white bread (or ice cream), cottage cheese with peaches/pears, pickles and peanut butter on a grilled cheese sandwich.

What's The One Thing You Can't Eat, even for money.

Potted meat. My mother used to eat it smeared on white bread with miracle whip, ugh. Smells like cat food, looks like cat food, comes out of a can like cat food. No can do.
