Xian Famous Foods in Boston-- A conversation with Jason

WOW! A shout out from Jason. Albeit, not exactly what we wanted to hear.
I thank him for clarifying. Now we need to work harder to convince him to reconsider!

Ma Po Tofu (Dofu) adventures

I went to BLR for lunch. The Mapo Tofu really sucked. It was sweet and not spicy at all. I didn't finish it. Worse than Mary Chungs.
Is it because I'm not Chinese??? Ruined my afternoon to think I could've been next door at New Shanghai eating the best Mapo Tofu around.

Xian Famous Foods in Boston-- A conversation with Jason

Jason said he will not consider a food court due to "food court politics"

Guy knows a lot more than me about making a successful business, plus Super 88 food court now has One of the Kind, which has amazing Mapo Tofu, Szechuan Fish and I'm sure other things I have yet to taste!!

Ma Po Tofu (Dofu) adventures

Had the New Shanghai mapo tofu

I think its really pitch perfect. It has the Ma La seriousness. Great doubanjiang and douchi as well as beautifully chopped green onions. Rice is fantastic and the portion size is huge. I will add that if you just buy Mapo Tofu you cannot sit there and the proprietor is kind of a jerk. Its worth dealing with his weird rules to try this dish (as well as other delicious ma la dishes). It is a bit expensive and I would say there wasn't quite enough rice for the heaping amount of Mapo Tofu, even though rice costs extra.

Xian Famous Foods in Boston-- A conversation with Jason

Great news! On a recent trip to NY, I made sure to visit both the St. Marks and Chinatown locations of Xian Famous Foods http://xianfoods.com/ . At the latter location, I was lucky to see Jason, the person responsible for spreading Xian throughout NYC. Jason informed me that XFF will shortly be opening in Boston; he's looking for a location as we speak. I am excited for this new development in Boston's culinary scene-- its something I miss from NY very much. XFF will also be opening locations, we are told, in other US Cities. But Boston is "one of the first."

Rugelach in Boston?

Kupel's cinnamon raisin and similar rugs are excellent. Only Zabar's are better, in my experience.
For chocolate I don't know a great option, but feel like they're never as good anyway.

New Shanghai very well balanced ma la. Big scallions! More spicy than tingly though and kind of pricey.

Ma Po Tofu (Dofu) adventures

The Mapo Tofu at Jojo Tai Pei is not hugely Ma La-- there are sichuan peppercorns but few and far between. Decently hot and sort of nice small pieces of everything very nicely presented. I'd still rather go down the street to OotK for a cheaper, spicier more Ma La version. But for people who don't want to eat in a food court, its pretty decent.
The Mapo Tofu at Mary Chung (lunch menu) is not Ma La at all and not worth discussing further. I fail to see why this restaurant garners so much enthusiasm. Anyone?

learn to make a f#*%ing coffee

Just like NYC is the capital of craptastic pizza but also contains motorino and co. and veloce and Difaras!
Boston IS the capital of craptastic coffee due to the inexplicable love affair with dunkin donuts that the people here seem to have. Its also the capital of craptastic sushi, but unlike with the coffee, there are few excellent options.

I tried Jaho and appreciated it. I should've put on the list. The iced Vietnamese coffee thingie was also quite good. Flour down the block is also decent for brewed coffee but iffy on espresso. But the buns are unbelievable.

Where can you get decent coffee in Boston? This morning I went to Cafenation and needed to have the macchiato remade due to their unfamiliarity with the drink. This is a constant annoyance in these psuedosophisticated cafes. I have had similar experiences at Treats across the street. Although the latter has decent pastries. Similarly, Athan's in Brookline has a magical selection of pastries and a great area to sit, but coffee that tastes like crap.

Not all is lost. The following places have been decent for the following individual drinks. please add more places to my list!
1) Cafe Fixe for Espresso and Machiatto
2) ERC in Back Bay for " and "
3) Refuge Cafe in Brighton for Iced coffee (steer clear of espresso drinks)

The only coffee that comes close to Abraco, Grumpy etc or other actually excellent NYC coffees are those at Fixe.

Ma Po Tofu @OotK is the best I've had in Boston-- its perfectly Ma La and not saccharine and cloying. The tofu is the perfect texture and the whole thing is six bucks. Can anyone do better?
