Kabocha Squash Scotch Eggs

I do like the idea of using squash for scotch eggs. That I think is a great idea. The only negative is the ridiculous specification of Sriracha. Seriously, it's hot sauce. I'm surprised there's not a gluten free specification to this recipe also.

California's Shark Fin Ban Survives a Challenge

I'm okay with outlawing shark fin soup if you are also outlawing all shark products but that's not what California is doing. You can't eat the fin but go right ahead and eat everything else in the shark as long as you throw the fin back in the water.

As is, I agree the bill is racist. It's easy to ban something that someone else is using and leave the sharks steaks alone that you put on your grill.

The unarguable justification for restricting it would be if we are killing off too many sharks through over fishing. If that is the case then it should be irrelevant whether the fin is used to make soup, the shark is chopped up into steaks or the carcass is thrown back into the ocean. You still have a dead shark. If sharks are truly so endangered then California should have outlawed shark meat and all shark products also. The fact that they didn't convinces me that the law is the typical joke of a cause that California is famous for.

Korean Chicken Wings

I thought the whole idea behind Korean fried chicken was twice frying to get a fully rendered and crispy skin? This just seems like Asian style Buffalo Wings.

Chick-fil-A Is Conservative? So Are a Lot of Other Restaurants

@EloiseM - So, that means you think a southern mayor for example should have the right to refuse a building permit for any business that backs Planned Parenthood for example? Maybe, you should think about it?

Considering that he only right to free speech in the Constitution is the right to a political opinion with no government retaliation, your logic is lacking to say the least.

Chick-fil-A Is Conservative? So Are a Lot of Other Restaurants

The Chick-fil-a boycott talk is just as silly as when the evangelicals do something like boycott Disney World or something equally stupid. I could maybe understand it if it were something where a business was the major opponent or leading fundraiser of whatever you're protesting but as one of the links in the article shows, people are complaining because the company donated $1000 to one group and $1000 a year to another. Are you people serious? $1000 is nothing yet your acting as if they were donating a $100 million a year or something.

Since most people really don't care either way on this boycott issue, the odds are all this is doing is getting more people to go try their sandwiches because of all the publicity. I'm sure Chick-fil-a is thanking all of you for helping get their name out in front of everyone.

Strawberry Fruit Leather

Doesn't adding sugar kind of defeat the whole purpose of creating what should be a healthy snack made of fruit? It's kind of like adding sugar to fruit juice so you can then add water to extend it. Why not just use more strawberries, less lemon juice and, if needed, simply reduce it more?

Farewell, Foie Gras: I'm Not Sorry to See You Go

This is just childish hysteria whipped up by people who are also too pansy to actually think about killing the animal whose products they eat. What a bunch of idiots. They "know instinctively that force feeding is bad." No data. No science. Nothing factual to show why it is bad. They just know. They blow off any science or reasoned arguments as to why it is not inhumane by simply saying none of the science or hundreds of years of experience matters because: "they just instinctively know."

Idiots because a whole lot of farming and food processing looks bad or is disgusting to the average person. Ever watched a cow be slaughtered and cut up? Ever watched a chicken be processed? I don't are if it is an organic family farm or industrial production. It is still killing something with a lot of blood and guts. Real easy to make it seem disgusting and the same people "will instinctively know" it is wrong... Bismark even used it in his famous quote that laws are like sausage. It is better not seeing them being made.

I want to blend my own chili powder (or is it chile powder?)

Just use a molcajete. Either use it to grind them all the way or to finish off the grind after the coffee grinder. Unless you're making an absolutely huge batch it should only take a couple of minutes to finish up what you've ground. You could always then run it through however fine a screen you want to separate out any few remaining slivers. If you have one of the large Thai granite mortar and pestles I don't see why that wouldn't work also. I just use the molcajete for this because I figure the larger and rougher pestle allows me to more easily grind versus pound.

PS If you use a molcajete, make sure to season it and buy a traditional lava one versus some of the decorative models made partially of concrete or of soft rock.

Whole Foods Is Ditching Unsustainable Seafood

Personally I think Whole Foods knows their client base best and has decided this is a good PR move to pander to a vocal part of that base.

However, I can't see anything wrong with what they were doing previously. I mean, come on they labelled it with a red sticker as unsustainable. How much clearer could it be? At that point they left it up to the customer to make their own decision on a perfectly legal choice. How is that wrong?

If you want to change the law then get the votes to do so. Alternatively educate people to get them to make the choice you support. Instead, isn't it just so much easier to simply force your beliefs on others? Kind of like what the anti-abortion people try to do.

USDA's Defense of Pink Slime Makes Us Gag

You'd have to be a total idiot to buy prepackaged or pre-ground hamburger meat and think they put anything in it except the crap they can't sell as anything else!

Oh it's gross, that's basically all most of the reporting on this issue comes down to. So are pretty much any of the industrialized but dramatically cheaper processed meats that you buy.

If you need to cut corners then guess what? You'll probably get some gristle in your hamburger.

What Makes a Banh Mi?

Yes, and technically there is no such thing as a chicken fajita, let alone a shrimp fajita. Doesn't stop them from being good and sure doesn't stop them from being popular.

Are Manners Getting Worse?

Wow, both you and Grumpy Old Man seemed to have missed the complete point. Almost all the actions he complains about such as cell phone use were not possible when he was younger. That's not a decline in manners. That's simply a changing and growing world. If he wants to argue about a decline in manners then he needs to stick to things that actually happened 40 years ago.

Oh yeah, complaining about those noisy kids in the restaurant unlike when he was young? Hate to say it, but that's typical old man, get off my lawn behavior!

Your points as everyone seems to have pointed out were either totally irrelevant to the topic or belied by your own previous posts such as the classic claiming it was okay for a host to lie and sneak bread into an Atkins dieter.
