Foodie on first venture to Canada; going to Calgary

Well . . . that's a bit too broad! What are some of your favorite type of food? Maybe favorite restaurants in your area?

Where to find a crown roast in Calgary? I don't care much about what type of meat it is, but I am on a budget. . .

Real Soy Sauce in YYC?

At home (Virginia, USA), I would buy regionally-made soy sauce. It was fermented in bourbon barrels. It was SO good. All I have found here is the fake stuff -- with MSG and other preservatives and often not actually fermented.

Has anyone found realllllly awesome soy sauce in Calgary?

3 nights in Calgary

Vin Room is a great idea -- very unique in concept, great small plates. I LOVE their grilled calamari.

My absolute favorite restaurant in Calgary is Il Sogno. It is modern Italian (not the Boston variety). They have a chef's tasting menu. Specifically, hubby and I always order the 6-course one and split it. We often split the wine pairings, as well, but I guess that depends on your budget, preference, and appetite!

I think District Urban Tavern is a must. Please see what I have said above -- I have yet to see something similar anywhere else in my travels. Be sure to order a Ball jar of beer and a bucket of bacon to start your meal!

I stand by Farm as a rec, as well. It's my second fave. ;)

Skip my rec for Catch -- coming from Boston, well . . . it's a seafood restaurant. In the prairies. It's as good as it gets here (and is quite good), but coming from Boston? Don't do it.

I still love Wurst. ;)

Please skip Muse. I have had terrible experiences there.

If you're up for a bit more than a meal, Big Rock Brewery has a fun brewery tour and beer tasting. (I would eat lunch beforehand, though, as the food was not impressive.)

Please look at menus and prices before arrival. I don't want to hear of a casualty due to sticker shock heart attack! :D

3 nights in Calgary

As always, I am amazed at how much people differ!

What food do you like to eat? Where are you visiting from?

Many of the restaurants mentioned are, in my opinion, formal. Muse, Home Tasting Room, Rush. . . to name a few. Some are good, but all are formal.

District Tavern is one of my favorite informal places to eat! It IS informal. The service is not the best at busy times, but it's a tavern. The food is phenomenal and locally sourced. They have in-house brews that are great. All is reasonably priced.

I LOVE Wurst! I love the atmosphere (patio and dining room). I love the food there. It keeps me coming back. Often, my husband and I split an entree and order an extra side or appy. My mouth is watering now! The spaetzle with spinach and bacon and cheese.... ohhhh yum.

Catch is in the Hyatt. Downstairs, at the Oyster Bar, is informal. It's isn't the cheapest, but is really good -- and they have well-priced daily specials.

You are very close to a great spot for Pho Satay -- Saigon Y2k.

If you need a late-night bite, You & Me is also close (Chinatown). I really like their dinner for 2, substitute crispy garlic chicken for the main entree.

Diner Deluxe is good for breakfast.

One of my go-to restaurants is within walking distance of you-- Farm. Tuesday is prix fixe (3 courses for $30). Locally-sourced ingredients. I love the atmosphere here -- sitting at the bartop is fun because you can see the chefs at work. They have fantastic berry iced tea. I love their charcuterie/cheese boards! The best I've ever had -- a well-planned accompaniment to each. I have never had a bad meal and love to converse with the servers.

Calgary & surrounding: where to find organic fresh bulk vegetables / general produce?

I realize that fought said no to farmer's markets. . . However! :) Souto Farms at Calgary Farmer's Market is awesome. No pesticides or herbicides. Fruits and veggies from B.C. (though a few imports, which are obvious -- mangoes don't grow in Canada!). He buys from family farms and grows on his own family farm. He'll tell you whats' good and not-so-good. I buy a large box from him each week and he gives me a cut off of his already low prices. I find him lower than anyone else. He'll also ask if we want free corn this week, stating that it's a little dry, etc.

Tell him I sent you and that you'll be buying large quantities each week.

Btw, where are you from?

Fresh shiitake mushrooms in YYC?

I bought some amazing ones at Souto Farms in the Calgary Farmer's Market this weekend. He had oyster, portabella, cremini, and button mushrooms, too. As a side note, he has the best cherries ANYWHERE! I think the shiitakes were $12/lb, but don't remember exactly. . .

Calgary restos

I was really disappointed by Charcut. I though it was dark and loud, to start. I felt that it was overpriced, for sure, and nothing served to me was memorable (nor was it anything I couldn't make at home, but that's a controversial statement on this board!).

I have not been to Avec, but it's a bit. . . I don't know, but I won't be going anytime soon.

What are you looking for? Price range, types of food, atmosphere? There are a lot of great choices in Calgary!

Wild Caught Shrimp YYC

I can check today. . . were they live? Heads on or off? The live, heads-on prawns intimidate me. . .

Sausage

It has been a sausage fest at our house! Ha! We have tried lots of sausage purveyors lately. . . Illichman's has a very nice bratwurst and Cabbage Roll sausage (tastes like Polska kielbasa). Thank you for that recommendation!!

The missing link had a very good garlic sausage, but it is quite expensive.

Spragg Meats, which is very close to Missing Link at the market, had a good deal on pork sausage. We did not LOVE the flavor, but it was a nice, natural sausage at a good price.

We also happened into Cracovia one day -- it is a Polish store off of Heritage Dr They bring sausage in from a shop in Red Deer that does everything naturally. We bought hat they called "bratwurst" (it was really Polish "biala", or raw sausage, flavored with marjoram and garlic). It was great! TONS of flavor and a fair price. Not a lot of fat in it, either. We'll be going back to try one of their 50,000 types of smoked sausages, too.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Wild Caught Shrimp YYC

I went to T&T last week to see if they had spot prawns - they don't, yet. However, they did have black tiger shrimp that the fish monger said was wild (???). It was $7.99/lb. I bought some and it tastes great. . . thoughts?

Where do you get great eggs in Calgary??

I saw duck eggs yesterday at Hong Kong Market on 17th Ave SE. As for chicken eggs, we like Lina's as well! If you're in the South of Calgary, though, we have found nice eggs at Polcan Meats (a Polish food store) on Heritage Dr. S. Lots of double-yolkers, too. :D

Sausage

Again, trying to find good and healthy AND cheap. :) I know, I know. . . those adjectives shouldn't describe one item! I want GOOD sausage with no preservatives (and, especially, not nitrites or nitrates). I have been buying Spolumbo's from Sobey's. It is okay, I guess, but I know nothing about how the meat used to make the sausage was raised, etc. And it certainly is pricey.

On a side note, I am an American who is new to Calgary (and Canada). I am used to buying local and natural at good prices. So I am trying to find my way around-- any help is appreciated!

Wild Caught Shrimp YYC

Where can I find good wild-caught shrimp at a good price in YYC? None of the grocery stores I have been to have anything wild-caught and the fish markets are uber-expensive. I'd love some direction!

GOOD kettle corn in YYC?

I am a Yank and miss my Trader Joe's for all sorts of reasons. . . but most of all, I miss their kettle corn! I really disliked the hillbilly one -- not a good balance of sweet and salty, and not crunchy. Is there any kettle corn in this city that is AWESOME?

Valentine's Day in Calgary

You guys have awesome ideas! I made a reservation at WURST for later this week. Apparently, my hubby has some plans for today, so we'll see . . . he isn't usually the planner!

Thoughts on Boccavino?

The problem is that we don't know anyone. We work in a very different environment from most, so we can't hang out with people from work, either. Annnnnd we don't get much opportunity to meet people!

Short of putting an ad in the paper, I have no idea how we'd get a Dinner Club started!

Where do you guys find these dinner groups? Hubby and I are brand new to the area (we moved from Virginia, US, 2 months ago), and something like that would be perfect!
