Xiao Long Bao - Shanghai style soup dumplings

i love it! im glad you guys are so passionate about food in the bay. i grew up in oakland so please don't call me a new yorker. my whole family are cooks and have tried shanghai(oakland) and yank shing and basically told me that i'd need to find something else to like in the bay other than the joes style as these xlb weren't good in the least. they haven't tried joes so theres no mark set. whatever, i can live with that. i do intend to try every place i can when i get back out there. i think the basic thing about ny food is that its all concentrated in one place, whereas in the bay you really need to seek out good places in a larger area. i do thank everyone for their responses even if you feel like bashing me.

Xiao Long Bao - Shanghai style soup dumplings

hrmm i had some family scout yank sing out, and the verdict was that the soup dumplings sucked... am i doomed to find good dumplings in the bay or do i have to make trips back to ny? don't care what anyone says about joes, yeah they may be over-hyped and touristy, but in the end they are damn good.

awesome! thanks for the recs, ill have to try them all when i get to the bay

what im really looking for is the richness in the broth... you can totally dis joes if you want, however just give me suggestions for the ones that you think are "superior" because in the end thats all that matters.

Moving out of new york back to the bay and was wondering if there were any places that serve soup dumplings like joes shanghai in nyc? please help me out as these are a weekly craving of mine.

Best Pasta?

Aurora in Soho has great fresh pasta. Also try Lupa. I'd avoid little italy altogether, as you can have a really bad meal there and it's all tourists(but thats just my personal opinion).

Indian Food- Takeout or Catering

my favorite place in the city is called indian curry mahal. it's on 2nd ave between 4th and 5th streets. their curries are very well done and also have great appetizers. my favorites are the chana poori appetizer and the chicken tikka mahkani curry. the curry has such a depth of flavor and creaminess that i've never tasted anywhere else. their naan is also very good and is not like the "pita" stuff other places serve in the area. i highly recommend this place and i'm sure they could handle delivering for a party of 15 people. hope this helps!

Classic French in New York. Need Opinions.

are you wanting something bistro-esque(balthazar) or more fine dining like robuchon? or even maybe something like bar bouloud?

Blue hill NYC, still worth it?

i recently went back(two weeks ago) after having not been in two years. have to say that i had one of the best meals in a long time. had the chef's tasting menu and everything that came out of the kitchen was delicious, fresh, and vibrant. i definitely recommend this place.

Carnitas?

regardless of the style of the carnitas, the best i've had in ny so far has been at tacqueria coatzingo in jackson heights. if you can make it out there it's definitely worth the trip.

Bobo - Have the service and food improved?

service for the most part failed us on our trip. they sent out amuses and didn't even say what they were. when ordering a bottle of wine we picked a bottle they were out of, it ran for about $56, and the waiter sold us a bottle for $76 without telling us the price. it wasn't a problem of money but he should of let us know especially since he knew what we were looking for. on top of that we noticed many guy's in suits floating around, managers? with all this staff around we thought maybe service would of been better, however we found ourselves pouring our own wine. we were in the upstairs room and just couldn't get over feeling like the place is a bar first and restaurant second. could just be the night we went, but the table behind us was literally screaming and yelling because they were so wasted.

Bobo - Have the service and food improved?

went last night, verdict: bad. started out with a weak and very small cocktail that was completely overpriced. we had to yell at each other because the second floor room was so loud and they kept on turning up the music. seemed like a good place to get drunk with a couple of friends, but definitely not what we were expecting based on their menu and website. service wise, it didn't reflect the menus pricing scheme. it felt almost like a high-end cafeteria trying to churn out as many people as possible. our appetizers were over salted and our mains left us completely unimpressed. to top it off one of the backwaiters tried to take my girlfriends entrée even when she had told him she was still working on it. one of the worst parts is that when we told the waiter that our apps were oversalted he said that it was a common complaint and took them off our check. where is the quality control with those prices? it basically seemed like a place that was trying to be really trendy and appear as if they were trying to serve quality food, but overall completely missed the mark.

best indian restaurant?

i completely agree with your assessment of devi. went there last thursday and the food was completely not worth the money. we ordered three apps and two mains(2 of us). they sent us amuses, but didn't course us out with anything else. all in all we were there for a total of 45 minutes in which time my girlfriend hadn't even finished her cocktail. they completely screwed up the pacing of our meal and the place wasn't even full! we left the place severely disappointed and had to take half the food with us since we had been rushed so badly. even the decor failed to impress...

top 3 restaurants iin williamsburg?

aurora is worth totally worth it. even if it does have hipsters(then again you ARE in williamsburg). it does attract more than that crowd however, and the food is really good. definitely try the braised short rib gnocchi.

Sripraphai, Kebab Cafe, Spicy Mina's (other Queens greats?)

yeah i had the al pastor, carnitas, and carne asada tacos. they were great. i have just started to explore the mexican fair in jackson heights so next time i make it out there im definitely hitting up some of the carts. i'd also like to explore more of coatzingos menu. i usually test tacquerias to see if they have good tacos, then most times everything else tends to be good. im so happy to have finally made it out there having grown up with amazing mexican in oakland california.

Am I crazy for thinking that Magnolia cupcakes suck?

yeah way too much hype for a cupcake that has way too much frosting(in my opinion), but then again thats seems to be the draw(from what i've heard from many people). not worth the trip to the w. village to stand in line. although if you are in the neighborhood they're banana pudding is generally pretty good.

Sripraphai, Kebab Cafe, Spicy Mina's (other Queens greats?)

having quite recently tried tacqueria coatzingo, this is quite possibly the best for tacos and general mexican fair in all of new york. i know big statement, but i was blown away by the quality of the meat. very good all in all.

Meatball Pizza

lombardi's does make a meatball pie(it was very good when i had it 6 years ago, before they expanded), and you might also want to try arturos on houston. they make a pretty good pie as well.

Life-changing Indian food

a place that NEVER gets mentioned on these boards is Indian Curry Mahal in the east village. this place totally changed my views on indian cuisine. it's got to be one of my favorites because of its curries. the channa poori is also very good. check it out.

Best burger delivery for the East Village?

awesome! glad it turned out alright even if the the delivery took longer than expected, but it was still 20 burgers... they tend to get packed in there sometimes so it doesn't surprise me much. still great burgers.

Cancun dinner recommendations

well i can't really comment on cancun itself, as i stayed on isla mujeres(seemed like cancun was just a resort-like las vegas), but if you had a chance to get over to that island(which is amazing!) i'd highly recommend super taqueria on the main strip.

A Voce First Timer - Recs?

i've been 4 times in the last 2 years and have always had a great meal. the only negative i can say about the place is the weird swivel chairs at every table.

top 3 restaurants iin williamsburg?

you must be kidding right? sea is a see and be seen place. the thai food is alright but not for that price. I'd hardly call $14 inexpensive.

Best burger delivery for the East Village?

hrmm tough choice as they are completely different types of burgers. i haven't had either of them delivered but i'd imagine blue 9 would be swifter even if paul's is more desirable (in my opinion).
