Where to find sloes?

I think you are right, but I can't understand why they couldn't be grown around here. No demand I suppose. Thanks for the Blackwell's suggestion. If I can't find sloes I am going to try my homemade Patxaran with damsons, as Nigel Slater suggests sloe gin can be made with sloes or damsons.

Where to find sloes?

Looking for sloes to try to recreate Basaran or Patxaran I bought in France last year. Berkeley Bowl? When?

Nocino - green walnut liqueur

So three months ago means you started this in late July? Where did the walnuts come from?

The honey sounds like an excellent flavor with the walnuts. Please post your recipe when you make it.

Napa Engagement Proposal - It's Going Down

Well, I think the Sterling tram holds just 4, so you could be the only two (and might be able to request that). Chateau Montelena is a little farther, but so lovely and private. And it could be sunny in Calistoga vs. foggy farther south on a July morning. Whatever you decide will be perfect, so don't stress too much. My husband proposed in our living room and it was perfect.

Napa Engagement Proposal - It's Going Down

The drive to Ferrari Carano is not worth it. And the tram to Sterling will probably have too many people - maybe not if you time it right.......

I am partial to the lake at Chateau Montelena http://www.montelena.com/visit/interactiveTour

OR what about looking out from the patio at Phelps http://www.jpvwines.com/tastings/

Bottle missing its cork

Given that this thread is 100 years old (okay 5), I thought I would reveal that it was a bottle of Tom Eddy's cab. To their credit, they delivered a replacement to our door.

Slow Food's $5 challenge - Why exactly is this pissing people off?

Great example. This year for my Christmas baking I compared spice prices at Raley's in Napa and Whole Spice. Taking into consideration that I had a half-full jar of supermarket ground ginger in my cabinet dating back to Christmas 2008, and cinnamon from 2009, I realized buying smaller quantities of spices at Whole Spice made much more sense than buying a whole McCormick jar and tossing it two years later.

Anyone starting any summer time liqueurs and cordials?

This is all very vague. "Don't use ripe fruit." But you have lumped together everything from citrus to apples to walnuts, which are vastly different and need to be treated as such. Unripe vs ripe is one issue, but variety, treatment, weather, are others.

Pink popcorn - Bay Area only?

"children were growing up in a pink-popcorn-brick-less world" Sad to think of, indeed.

Now who remembers the mouse house where the mice tunneled through loaves of bread at the entrance to the children's zoo? Were they sourdough or am I just being totally nostalgic?

Pink popcorn - Bay Area only?

Thanks for that link to Wright's on Potrero Ave. Apparently there is another location in Sacramento.

So, for all the non-natives, did you beg for pink popcorn in Detroit or Dallas or Kansas City too, or does it not exist there?

Pink popcorn - Bay Area only?

Last Sunday the Chronicle ran a story about SF's "Culinary Highlights" - link here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/09/25/FDAF1KL5VB.DTL - including the pink popcorn sold in bricks at the SF Zoo. Here's a link to a photo of the popcorn: http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/...

Is this stuff only Bay Area? I grew up eating it - I worked at the zoo as a kid - and never thought it was unique. Is this another endangered SF classic? I think I remember having it at Fairyland too?

Please enlighten me! Is pink popcorn a Bay Area phenomenon?

Thanks for the update. It is still green? Not brown?

Nocino- Has anyone tried making walnut liquor?

Don't be put off by the sparkling wine. Of course it goes flat almost immediately. It just adds a touch of acidity which is a nice counterpoint to the bitter walnuts and sugar.

banner ad getting in the way of login

Ironic that I just logged out to see if I could add to the list of problem ads, and then couldn't escape that *&&^%^&&^% Oregon ad for at least 20 tries..... I'm NEVER going to Oregon, by the way ;-)

Here are three others that block login:
Chevron Techron
Superpages
Kikkoman (with picture of kid and ponzu on first screen)

Honestly, why not cut the ads until this is debugged?

banner ad getting in the way of login

The Oregon ad was beige with black lines - much like the TravelOregon one I am seeing right now in a box on the right. I can't remember much about the BBQ ad, and the Chow ad was red?

The ad this morning was something about Oregon. Tonight I had the same issue with several ads including a BBQ sauce ad (KC Masterpiece maybe?) and a Chow ad (interesting).

Not the first time this has happened. This morning I try to login and the banner ad at the top of the page is directly in front of the boxes for user name and password. Seems like it should be an easy fix.

Where to do wine tastings in Napa Valley?

Here's a recent thread on picnicing at Napa wineries:
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/799502

Oakville Grocery is fine, but overpriced. Other options for picnic supplies:
Sunshine Market in St. Helena
Fatted Calf in Napa

Not as upscale, but you can get a good picnic at:
Genova deli in Napa
Vallerga's market in Napa

7 Days in Napa Early October--Need Dining/Winery Suggestions

Have a wonderful week - how could you not?

For Monday lunch, I suggest Cook in St. Helena rather than Cindy's. It is smaller, less touristy (okay everywhere is touristy!) and the food is simple and excellent.

Skyline is nice, but (again) smaller and less crowded is Westwood Hills. Perfect for a 1 to 2 hour hike, which is all you have time for. Exit 29 South at 1st St and head west on Browns Valley Road.

Pearl in Napa What's good?

Pearl is a real Napa locals place and flies under the Chowhound radar most of the time. I always find the menu a little confusing but the food very competent. I guess I'd say the menu is too fusion/eclectic/mixed up for my taste. Having said that, I have always enjoyed meals there: fish tacos, chicken verde and vegetable polenta are some favorites.

Cross Rib Roast ?

I roasted a cross rib cut six months or so ago and it was as I remember my mom's. I probably bought it at Browns Valley Market in Napa.

Cross Rib Roast ?

Also from Northern California, and my mother always used a cross rib roast for roast beef. Studded with garlic, 325 for 25 minutes per pound. Not the most tender roast, has to be rare, but is delicious.

Ad Hoc or La Toque?

Well said, CarrieWas218! Personally, I would choose Ad Hoc any day, since twee is not my thing (but I have enjoyed the theater, if not the food particularly, at La Toque). And all of your other places are within walking distance so why not drive one night...... But La Toque would be quite different than the other restaurants you have chosen.
