K├Âlsch @ restaurants?

It's more of a bar, but Weschler's definitely has Reissdorf Kolsch on its menu. They also have a bunch of other German beers on their menu as well. As for food, they serve some currywurst and pretzels and other small dishes.

Lively place for drink and good food near Penn Sta

If Korean is good for you guys, then K-Town is really close by. It'll certainly be lively as well on a Friday night.

Solo lunch dining at Del Posto

I've never just walked in, but even if you call ahead that morning, they usually have tables available for lunch. Also, I've been there solo twice for lunch, and have never seen people eating at the bar.

Poor college student seeks sub-9 dollar(after tax and tip) in NYU/Union square area.

I'm in the same situation and here are some of the places I've found:

-Downtown Bakery: for some great burritos when you don't want Chipotle
-Xe May: for Vietnamese style sandwiches that are plenty filling but not too heavy on the stomach
-Xi'an Famous Foods: for ethnic Chinese handmade noodles and lamb sandwiches
-Pommes Frites: for an unhealthy snack of Belgian style fries with a huge selection of sauces
-Otafuku: for takoyaki (octopus balls) and other Japanese street food snacks
-Panya: for a small cafe with some seating that serves Japanese-style baked goods and meals
-Cafe Zaiya: for another small cafe like Panya
-East Village Cheese: for some really cheap cheeses that you can pair with the Balthazar breads that they have in-store
-'wichcraft: for fresh sandwiches

Early Morning Take Out Dim Sum

Thanks all! I ended up at Lucky King Bakery, and they had plenty of dim sum for takeout at ~8:30am when I showed up. They were quite happy to accommodate my large order and the prices were quite fair. I didn't have the chance to sample any of the food myself, but the group of people I brought it for seemed happy to devour it.

Early Morning Take Out Dim Sum

I need to pick up around $100-$150 worth of dim sum in Chinatown next Sunday morning at around 9am for a group breakfast. Do any of you Chowhounders know of a place where I could do this? I'm thinking a bakery that sells dim sum would probably work pretty well for this.

cake, cake, cake! (help needed to find my perfect b-day cake).

Chinese-style cakes definitely taste different from American-style cakes. I happen like them a lot better, because the cake doesn't sit as heavy in the stomach. You can actually try a slice at the Eldo bakery to see if you like it enough to get a whole cake. I'm partial to the mango cake myself.

A Day in Lille

I actually ended up at a place called La Chicoree near the Palais Rihour just out of convenience. It was nothing exceptional, but the meal was quite solid and it had nice outdoor seating on that beautiful Sunday evening.

Weekend in Cologne and Dusseldorf

I will be there the 2nd weekend in July. I know there's going to be a festival in Cologne on the 13th, and I thought it'd be a good time to see the city. Is the beer only available at certain times of the year? I've never heard of that.

I'd like some suggestions on where to eat in either Cologne or Dusseldorf. I love trying local food but I don't really have the budget to go all out either. However, if it's worth it, I welcome all suggestions!

Uses for Spicy Mustard?

I recently got a jar of spicy mustard and I'm not sure how to use it. The mustard is quite sinus-clearing, but I don't particularly enjoy that sensation. Does anybody have any ideas to use it up?

Thanks for the recommendation! I actually found some at Whole Foods on Bowery. I got the last one--apparently it's a very popular flavor.

Nice Tapas place for a first date?

For a first date, I think Nai in the East Village would be fun. It's not particularly expensive in terms of tapas and they have some great specials on pitchers and half pitchers of sangria (albeit not particularly strong). The food is solid and the experience was enjoyable the last time I was there.

Pata Negra, also in the East Village, is a really small but really great tapas place with lots of wines. Their tapas list is quite short but all the dishes that we had were great, so it's good if you have trouble making decisions. Our waiter was just the right amount of entertaining and the atmosphere is quite cozy and romantic (in my opinion).

Hou Yi Hot Pot Restaurant

My experience was nearly the same as kathryn's.

We ordered the combo hot pot, with medium spicy on one side. I felt that the broth itself was not particularly spicy but the thick layer of chili oil on top ended up coating everything in a film of hot oil. I eventually ended up cooking most of the food in the non-spicy side and then dipping it in the chili oil on the spicy side.

The beef was quite nice and fatty, and while the lamb didn't have as much fat, it had a nice lamb-y flavor that was a pleasant leaner protein option. The watercress was well picked and fresh as well.

It was also nice to have the beverages included in the price, especially the house-made herbal tea. It was a refreshing counterpoint to the fatty proteins that we helped ourselves to generously.

Per Se Salon Anniversary Help

So we finally made it to the Salon and it was an incredible experience. We really wanted that table by the window and so we got there a little early and were the first ones in the restaurant. I definitely recommend trying to get that table because it's truly the best table in the Salon. When I asked our waiter for this table, he let me know that he thought that it was not only the best table in the Salon, but his favorite table in the entire restaurant.

We each ordered 3 courses each (appetizer, entree, and dessert) and were quite satisfied with how much food we received. I'm not a very big eater but the food was so good that I ate it all and was quite full by the end. My favorite dishes of the night were the foie gras appetizer and the lamb entree. The foie gras came in quite a sizeable portion and I'm sure we would have been satisfied with half the portion even considering that we shared the dish between us. My lamb entree was much larger than her quail entree and I was really surprised at how generous my portion of lamb was. It was really delicious and the roasted artichokes it was served with were also quite delectable too.

While I really enjoyed the food, I wasn't particularly blown away by the presentation of the food. However, this isn't usually one of my main concerns when dining out. Where Per Se really shines in my experience was in the service, which was extremely gracious. They were very accommodating at all times. When I asked to retrieve my phone from my coat that I had checked when we had first entered the restaurant, they brought my phone out to me on a little silver tray. It was totally unexpected and it made us feel like we were just as special as those who were dining in the main dining room.

At first, I'm fairly certain they didn't know how to treat us since we were by far the youngest diners in the whole establishment. The waitstaff definitely warmed up to us as the meal went on and our main waiter turned out to be quite talkative once he realized that that we were really enjoying the novelty of the whole experience. We ended up spending a little over 2.5 hours for the entire meal and it was definitely the most pleasurable dining experience I've ever had. I really do want to go again and try the rest of the menu in the Salon. I think we had more fun in the Salon than we would have had in the main dining room and it was surely the best choice for us.

Per Se Salon Anniversary Help

Oh, and another question: Has anybody had an experience here as a fairly young diner? We're still in college and I don't know how they'll feel about serving us. I'm just a little concerned about fitting in since I assume that they typically have a slightly older clientele. (Sometimes, we're treated a little less graciously by the waitstaff at certain dining establishments because we appear to be quite young.)

Per Se Salon Anniversary Help

This is actually one of the reasons that the Per Se Salon is at the top of my list. We don't have the stomach space to truly appreciate a full tasting menu and it's much more economical to go a la carte. I like that the Salon still has that special occasion feel however.

Per Se Salon Anniversary Help

Hmm...I never thought of going to the EMP bar area. Do you know if there are tables in the bar area or do you have to sit facing the bar? I'm worried that it might be a little awkward to sit facing the bar in this situation.

Also, thanks for all the advice on Per Se! My SO likes to eat early so we'd probably get there right when it opens--perhaps there'd be more a chance that we'd get that table?
