What discontinued products do you miss?

A little OT: My Daddy was an assistant manager at Kmart.... I *loved* going to the cafeteria way back when. (All cafeterias were awesome at that time--all the choices!). The Blue Plate Special! The Blue Light Special Plate? I can't remember. The last Kmart store in our county closed last year, and I was so sad. We moved to NC in 1974 because of Kmart. I hated their jeans, but I loved the cafeteria. :-( I miss Kmart and Daddy.

LOL! I explained, eventually, but I think I'm going to have to make one, to show him the awesomeness that is a fritter! :-) I've given up on the cornbread--I even put BACON in it once, but it did not work. I may have to try sweetbread... (the bread version, not the other. lol)

hmmm... he does like tortilla chips, so that might work! (re conversation: I was laughing so hard I could barely get 'corn fritter' out! And there was no stopping the laughter after that!)

Not so much. There was a whole cornbread/grits/hushpuppies ... "The only way I like corn is corn-on-the-cob, I tolorate it if it's corn kernals. But that's IT!". I'm in hysterics by this time: "What about corn fritters?" "What the hell's a fritter?" he says very loudly and exasperatedly. It was so funny. So, no polenta. :-)

Friday Night in Lent ideas...

Everyone!

Thank you so much for all of your ideas! I know they have helped me, and I'm sure other people with enjoy them as well.

I have dinner (and lunch) ideas for more than just Lent! I do like the idea of making these all thru the year, because I try not to cook with a great deal of meat; sometimes, it's just a lack of imagination or of excitement about cooking. Well, now, I have a lot of interesting meals to look forward to! I will find my Joy in Cooking again with these ideas! You all are the best!

Oh! and I'm sharing these with Mom/Pop, brothers & sisters! Everyone says thank you!

I love this idea... I have it saved for one cold winter night. I think it sounds just great... Isn't it funny how the simplest of meals can just touch a cord?

All of those look so good! I think hubby would like those! (I'd have to leave the eggplant out, but maybe I could put it only in half!)

I like pasta primavera, I may save it for warmer weather, though. (I know it's not a long cold spell here, but it's cold enough!)

I googled Ottolenghi's mejadra, and boy! that looks good.

no soup: I wasn't in the mood for soup at that time. :-)

And that sweet potato salad looks very good. I've needed lunch ideas for everyday, not just Fridays in Lent.

I like these ideas. I do like beans & rice; and that Persian dish sounds wonderful!

Stuffed peppers and stuffed cabbage leaves, I like those ideas as well!

I've tried the risotto balls (once), but they fell apart; I think I shall have to try again!

I like stratas, and I like tortillas, I just never think of them.

I'm going to look for the veggie pattie ideas

Eggplant is out... (I love it, hubby doesn't), BUT, I like the idea of Taziki and bruschetta, maybe hummus... But all of the dips to choose from, that sounds fun!

I like tuna, but hubby does not. (But I like the idea with the potatoes, eggs, onion.... sounds like a lunchtime meal for me!)

Thanks Ttrockwood and prima, the sweet potato stew sounds yummy, and the spinach artichoke muffins sound great for lunch!

Ribollita, mujadarra, and Shashuka are all new to me! But I do like an adventure in cooking! I get bored cooking the same things over & over.

Mashed potato & cabbage pancakes! I can't wait to try this!

Yes, there's some resentment, for many things. You would *think* that would be a reasonable request.... It would not be received reasonably.

Frittata sounds good, I was just worried about scrambled eggs for dinner...

I made skordalia once, and I think I did it wrong... It was the only potato dish I've ever had that I did not love.

Roasted veggies are a very good idea. And Potato Pancakes?! One of my favorite dishes, I don't know why I didn't think of that!

I never thought about just veggie tempura for dinner, but I like the idea!

Stuffed peppers could be wonderful!

Lol on the Oops! I like the idea of the black bean tostados and the lentils. I, for one, love falafel! So, we'll see what everyone else thinks!

I love eggplant, hubby doesn't. But the stuffed peppers are a great idea.

You know, my mom made something Indian one time (and served it with chips), that my husband loved. That's a very good idea, thanks!

I never thought about salad! (The one time I made salad-for-dinner, step-d just ate the pineapple. No lettuce, nothing else. So that's the last time that happened).

Midwest, I like the stuffed peppers idea, and the sweet potato stew. Maybe on the cooked veggies over rice...

But that salad: that looks like something I would love to take for lunch! for any day
