Don Roth's Blackhawk - Wheeling, Il

My husband and I went there this summer- we had not been in a long time. I remember the salads being the best! I have to tell you our dinner was one of the worst experiences. They could not get my steak cooked! I am NOT a fussy person and hate to complain at restaurants. I sent the steak back and it came back raw. By the time I got my third steat I was not hungry. Made for good leftovers

I will say that the manager was wonderful, and he comped the whole meal! All in all, my conclusion is that everyone has a bad night, they showed that they are truly trying to please their customer. We will give it a whirl again.

I agree that the place needs an update- that said there is something about a restaurant staying the same, and having a meal you can count on. I hope Don Roths is around a long time. I also agree that Pete Millers is a more expensive version, younger crowd of Don Roths. I am anxious to hear what other chi-chows think.

What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?

omg I recall that one too, but ours also had some arteries running through- gross out, big time. That was a pure save on the side of the mouth, put it in ther napkin or go to the bathroom.
Thanks for sharing!

Good food on the Coral Bay side of St. John?

We just returned from USVI on Sunday. Spent the day in the Cruz bay area we did go to a place in Mongoose Junction called Ocean Grill or Ocean something. It was one of the best meals we had. They have huge appetizers which you could make a meal out of (less money), and good entrees if you want to splurge. They did have a suprising wine selection reasonable pricing. FYI everything seems to be expensive

If you are into snorkeling, we did find an out of the way place called Waterlemon Cay, near Anneburg. You have to hike a mile on a beautiful path with your gear. but some of the best snorkeling I have ever seem. We saw 6-10 sea turtles, and beautiful tang, parrot angel and trumpet fish.
Enjoy!

Pinstripes in Northbrook

I have been there three times since it opened. Once for my daughters birthday party(really fun, easy and reasonable) the other 2 times for bocce and dinner. Last night my husband and I went just for dinner. We had a crab, avacado, and arugula starter. My husband had the beef tenderloin, with garlic tomato and spinach. I had the pine nut crusted halibut, on a bed of risotto (fall veggies) and the same spinach side. We thought it was great. Service was really good, 2 managers checked on us during dinner. The wine list is very interesting heavy on italian wines. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. All in all we would go back. One of the draws for us would be that have a nice childrens menu along with having decent adult entrees. We have had the fig & procuitto flatbread it is outstanding! The only drawback is that it is a little bright and loud later in the evening and it is a tad crowded. Not at all romantic :)

I am interested to see what other "chi-hounds" have to say!

Snacks for Teachers' Lounge

shannoninstlouis, great that you are doing this. I have been "Staff Appreciation" chair at our school for the last two years. One thing that I have done at the begining of the week is to have fruit baskets (make my self from Costco selection of fruit, bananas, oranges, grapes, apples) in the lounge, along with some bakery goods (scones would be great). I also have an assortment of Teas, from Calming to Morning Buzz teas. The staff really likes that the fruit and teas last pretty much the whole week, and there is a selection of healthy choices. Fruit may be a nice change of pace from bakery goods and a "I am sick if winter" pick me up. I have also had some trail mix in containers.

Knowing some schools, things can turn into a contest. Whatever you do will be good and appreciated.
Best of luck!

BVI's on a boat

I was there in November, on a 51ft yacht with 5 gal pals. A fantastic girls trip. We did go to The Bitter End Yacht Club on Josy Van Dyke for "real showers" for a small charge of $3.00 each. Also went to Briars for an elegant dinner. The food was really wonderful $80.00 fixed price. The surroundings unbeatable. A great place for a splurge. You can have the water taxi driver "Red Rat" take you, along with his side kick "Prince" who will serenade you with his guitar! Enjoy, it's one of my top vacations so far......

90th Birthday Celebration- Oakbrook Area

Thanks so much, we live far away but stopped this weekend. I felt like a 10 year old going to a fancy "supper" with my grandparents! The back is available and only has one step down, with lots of windows and a fireplace. Seems like a winner. We talked to my MIL about the place and she said that she use to go there with my FIL. She would prefer that to the bowling alley idea her favorite son booked. So we found a place! Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I will give it a full review in January.....

90th Birthday Celebration- Oakbrook Area

Has anyone heard of or been to Macks Golden Phesant? One the website it looks like a 50's throw back, where you get the chopped liver with crackers as soon as you sit down. Lots of wood paneling. It's in Elmhurst (where she spent 55 years of her life). She would like to go there, and they are open for our date. Any reviews? Remember the audience is elderly. I bet they "make a good drink: aka "Strong".

Thanks for all your suggestions, I will present them to the board!

90th Birthday Celebration- Oakbrook Area

Hoping my Chowers can make some suggestions. My MIL is turing 90 next month. My BIL was in charge and things have gone south pretty fast. We are looking for a place to accomodate 30 guests, ranging from 90 to 2 years old, for a dinner. Casual dining, not super expensive. Maggianos is booked for the date we are looking at.

Can anyone help step up from the bowling alley my BIL has booked? (Insert you comment here).

Many thanks in advance

Tavern at the Park

We have friends coming in from Eurpoe for a visit, thinking of going to Tavern at the Park, the new restaurant on Randolph across from Millenium Park. Since it is new, would like to know if any of my fellow chowhounds have been. Any early reviews?

Take-home foodie souvenirs from Chicago?

How about Jay's potato chips? A tad fragile, but unique to Chicago.

Wilmette/Glenview for drinks & dinner

nsxtasy always has great suggestions, I would like to add "The Noodle" in Glenview. It's near the train station, and has a nice wine list, and cocktails. The food is pretty good. You get to pick your own type pasta, and sauce. We dine their often with our children.

Charile Beinlichs, not what it use to be?

You hit the nail on the head, I use to go there with my Mom. She has been gone for a while, and I still miss her so maybe that was it. Just was not the same. Anywhoo, I will still go. Enjoy the time with your dad!

Baked Chicken Tenders

I just made this last week for my "chicken finger divas". 2 cups of pretzels, and 3/4 cup of peanuts, chopped it up in the food proccessor. Dipped the chicken in egg, and then in the "crumbs". Sprayed with olive oil (like PAM). Baked at 375. They LOVED it and asked for seconds and then thirds. Easy and a winner!

Charile Beinlichs, not what it use to be?

Went to a casual couple's dinner last Saturday at Charlie Beinlichs in Northbrook. Just a "burger and a beer" night. I have been going there for as far back as I can remember, but have not been in a couple of years. I have got to say I was a wee bit disapointed.

The shrimp cocktail still had the same great sauce, but the shrimp were a lot smaller. The burger was not as I remembered good but not outstanding.

Was it me? Were my taste buds not in tune? Anyone else notice this?

Your thoughts please.

Asparagus Time

I do a similar Asparagus roll: Blanched asparagus, boursin cheese, and prosciutto. When ever I have parties my guests always ask if I will be making them! Big hit, little effort!

Kraft parmesan packaged in disposable grater

I tried it, thought it would be good for my young kids to grate their own. WRONG, hard to grate, not much taste, it lead to a lot of frustration during dinner. Had to break it open to get the rest of the cheese out. I am sticking to my zyliss grater and chunk parmesean. Agree with the landfill-waste issue.

Add one can of Muir Glen (or other kind) diced tomatoes cook for a bit, when its done add some sour cream and basil. YUM. Serve with rice or pasta and a veggie. My girls love it, and as an added bonus we do too!
