Concord, North Carolina
Best meal I ever ate:
We had just hiked up a 14,000 foot mountain in Colorado and slammed down from the top in a torrential downpour, with lots of scary thunder and lightening. Drenched, near hypothermic, we were taken into a prospector's cabin by two grizzled old guys, Bob Chastain and another fellow whose name I never knew. While we huddled in our underwear around the wood stove, Bob cooked up some venison chunks (the refrigerator was an icy stream; he had shot the deer standing on the front porch of the cabin), fried some potatoes, and made us a little salad with some bottled blue cheese dressing. There was a pot of cowboy coffee and evaporated milk to sweeten it. No other meal has ever come close.
My current drink of choice:
The rhum cocktail from Chez Henri in Boston
I really wish I could:
Have some more of my Grandma's elderberry pie. Have some more of my Aunt Betty's biscuits (baked fresh, from scratch, twice daily in a cast iron frying pan. Have some more of Gran's shortbread.
My "Go-to" dinner party dish:
Hummus bi tahini & homemade pita chips, with a ton of garlic in both.
My favorite comfort food:
My most tattered cookbooks:
Joy Of Cooking, Cafe Beaujolais Cookbook, The New James Beard
