We had just hiked up a 14,000 foot mountain in Colorado and slammed down from the top in a torrential downpour, with lots of scary thunder and lightening. Drenched, near hypothermic, we were taken into a prospector's cabin by two grizzled old guys, Bob Chastain and another fellow whose name I never knew. While we huddled in our underwear around the wood stove, Bob cooked up some venison chunks (the refrigerator was an icy stream; he had shot the deer standing on the front porch of the cabin), fried some potatoes, and made us a little salad with some bottled blue cheese dressing. There was a pot of cowboy coffee and evaporated milk to sweeten it. No other meal has ever come close.
