Chinatown spot fit for a group

thanks, everyone!
i'm going to check out 3 spots this weekend. Ping's Seafood, Congee Village on Bowery, and Amazing 66 (a recommendation from a friend).

Chinatown spot fit for a group

that is a shame! any thoughts on their other location on Bowery? does it offer the same private/semi-private rooms?

Chinatown spot fit for a group

thanks for the suggestions. any place you can think of that isn't Dim Sum and instead traditional Cantonese or Shanghai cuisine?

Chinatown spot fit for a group

Hi,
I want to have my birthday dinner in Chinatown but it seems that all of my favorite spots are not fit for groups. Sure, they may have the communal tables but I am looking for a spot that could accommodate 15-20. Of course I want to keep the food on par with some of my favorites - Joe's Shanghai, Hop Lee, Big Wong - but am hoping to find somewhere that maybe has a private room for a Chinatown price or is a little less cluttered than what I am used to.
Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Restaurant Gift Certificate in Triangle Area

Thank you for the recommendations. I know that they have tried Watts Grocery and enjoyed it. They did not enjoy Nana's and Magnolia Grill, which I agree are both overrated. The Washington Duke Inn isn't what I would consider ethnic or creative. After looking at Piedmont's menu, I think that is right up their alley.
Thanks again!

Restaurant Gift Certificate in Triangle Area

Hi everyone.
I need help finding a nice restaurant to buy a gift certificate for my parents for X-Mas. They often come and visit me in NYC and enjoy ethnic and creative foods. Some places that I know that they enjoy are Taverna Nikos, Starlu (before it closed), & Anotherthyme. I find formality annoying but I certainly do not want a casual hang out either. The price is not a factor. They live in the Duke University area so Durham and Chapel Hill are preferred but they will definitely travel to Raleigh for great good.
Your recommendations are appreciated.

Best Italian Sausage

Cheese and parsely sausage at Faiccos. Simply unbelievable...

Help me choose in East Village

Definitely agree with Lavagna. It has very flavorful and seasonal Italian fare. The service is friendly and always helpful with their affordable wine list.

Cheap, good sushi

Marumi located at 546 Laguardia Pl has wonderfully prepared and fresh sushi. The service is attentive and friendly. It also features a lovely covered garden in the back. Their spicy sashimi salad is incredible. They have a wonderful assortment of sushi that is priced from about $1.50 to $4.00 a piece. Don't be turned away by its proximity to NYU. It still manages to stay quiet and calm despite the students nearby.

Casual, friendly atmosphere near Lincoln Center

Type: casual, group of guy friends, not everyone knows each other, not expensive but good friendly atmosphere and environment that is not too shabby. Even a steakhouse or something would work for this one.

Location: near lincoln center

when: saturday night at 6:00.

Any suggestions?

Lunch today near Columbia U.

Is this the vegetarian spot, I think named Roots? I live right around the corner and have yet to go. I am ashamed to admit that it is entirely due to the atmosphere but if you recommend it, I will certainly give it a try.

Good food and bar scene?

I agree with Otto. They have some inventive drinks that come in relatively large glasses and are well-priced. I recommend the Sardinian Iced Tea and Razz Ricki. As was mentioned in another thread in the past couple of days, their prosciutto is heavenly. I think that you can order anything on the menu at the bar.

Best top 10 restaurants in NYC to bring out-of-town visitors?

yep, Spice Market will give you the atmosphere and yummy bites that I think you were hoping to get from Sushi Samba.

Best top 10 restaurants in NYC to bring out-of-town visitors?

Second pellegrino31's notion on Sushi Samba. Go for the drinks, flee to another spot for superior food. If you were heading to the one on 7th Ave. S, which is the better of the 2 (not saying much), Agave is practically across 7th Ave. S at W. 10th St. They offer very flavorful Southwestern cuisine. They also have jalapeno-infused tequila that makes for an incredible margarita experience.

Kitchenette 1272 Amsterdam Ave. @ 123rd st. has wonderful sandwiches and incredible desserts, especially their pies. Their meatloaf is also pretty damn good. Also, Max Soha, is right next door and serves extremely affordable authentic Italian. It is an offshoot of the East Village Max.

Thanksgiving in NYC

tanib said "excluding" wine. Because of Thanksgiving though, $50, even excluding wine, may still be a little low. The menus are usually prix-fixe. Cesca's in the past has been $70 for 3 courses, Fleur de Sel $75 for 3 courses... just to name a few.

Best Hamburger

No, there is a Jumbo's on at least 116th st. There may be others. Perhaps it is Jimbo's, a more popular chain's, Papaya Dog?

Brother Jimmys

The food is terrible. The only item that I have enjoyed there are their frickles (fried pickles). They are all fun for sporting events but leave before the frat boy crowd gets there. I expected so much from people that were supposed to know Southern cooking. They delivered well below my expectations.

Upper West Side Must Hit List

Wonderfully inexpensive and perfectly-sized portions. Their Max's meat sauce is incredible. I have also enjoyed their pugliese. Their desserts are nothing spectacular but who needs dessert after you are stuffed full of pasta.

Great Jones Cafe is repulsive

Although I have only been for brunch, I have to disagree with your view on this consistently good cafe. Great Jones serves a yummy, wholesome, and well-seasoned cajun brunch and I have never seen the quality waver. The bloody marys are spicy and delicious. I can’t remember ever having mediocre service either. They have always been friendly and add cheese to my grits when I ask. I hope you give it another try and I will certainly venture there for dinner some time soon.

Brunch - I only have one shot!

They take reservations and you don't need to call too far in advance...

Brunch - I only have one shot!

I know Norma's in the Parker Meridien hotel is considered a breakfast-all-day spot, but I am not sure why it cannot be considered for your brunch outing. They have a wonderfully creative menu with some of the highlights being 5 different types of eggs benedict. I have loved their huevos rancheros and their shrimp frittata. Although pricey, I think it is an absolutely worthwhile experience.
Also, Kitchenette has a very inventive brunch menu. They have great staples like their tuna melt accented with dill but they also have yummy egg dishes that come with various sides like corn bread or hashbrowns. They always have a cocktail special and their margarita is surprisingly excellent. I have only been to the uptown location but I heard the Tribeca location is pretty great as well. Don't forget to try the desserts!

Romantic, cheap Italian in the east or west village?

My boyfriend was given the responsibility of choosing a place for a recent special night and he lovingly and wisely chose Lavagna on 5th btwn A & B. The room is small and intimate with a rustic decor. I was in the mood for ravioli so I chose the spinach ravioli which was served in a porcini sauce. He had lamb that was cooked to a tender perfection. We shared a tuna appetizer. The wine list is extensive but very affordable. The service was friendly and attentive and our server was particularly knowledgeable of the wine selection.

Need a good not too pricey restaurant in tribeca

Aimee,
I always have a wonderful time at Flor de Sol (361 Greenwich btwn Franklin & Harrison). Out of town guests have been impressed by the ambiance and especially the food. I have never had the entrees, or platos principales, there and usually prefer to dine with several tapas, which is perfect for a group. The low-lighting makes for a very intimate experience. The sangria is excellent and very strong (!), although you would not know by the smooth taste. It is only 5 short blocks from the knitting factory. I remember that when I have gone with groups, we have divided the bill equally and with a tip, it came out to approximately $40/person and that included several tapas each and plenty of sangria. ALSO, Saturday nights offers some beautiful flamenco dancing. Tribeca is a great neighborhood so I am sure you will find something tasty. Enjoy!

Drinks before dinner at Gramercy Tavern

House is quite nice. I agree with the caliber of the wine list. It is very cozy and has two separate bars.
I do not agree with Luna Park. Their cocktails are served in plastic cups and if you are lucky, you won't see a rodent moseying through the bar. That is the one huge downside of being in, not around, Union Square.
Perhaps a good idea may be to stick with the quality of cocktails at Gramercy Tavern and head to a place that will certainly have them considering their mutual roots. Tabla has the Bread Bar at Tabla with some delectable cocktails. The weather should hold up for the weekend and they do offer outdoor seating.

Sea Grill These Days

A la plancha is on a hot metal plate. I think traditionally, as in a heck of a long time ago, it was cooked on a really hot stone. Planked is on a wooden plank so the type of wood that it is made of actually affects the taste. The only fish I have had like this is cedar plank salmon and the salmon definitely took up some of the smoky, wood flavors.

What's your top 3 upper east side restaurants with moderate prices?

Absolutely agree with Taco Taco. Maybe not a place to go to impress the in-laws, i.e. the decor leaves much to be desired. The flavors are authentic and the portions are monstrous. Oh, and that whole fad with tableside guacamole... they make a killer guac for $8. They also have delectable margaritas. My favorite is the cucumber margarita - tasty and refreshing.

RESTAURANT ADVICE FOR A FIRST NY TIMER.

One interesting spot is Congee Village in China Town. This is a huge restaurant that has several authentic offerings but more interesting is that it has private karaoke rooms on the lower floors. These are quite an experience to simply walk by.
For pizza, I am a sucker for John's of Bleecker but I love a really cheesy pizza, which this certainly provides.
I get tired of people arguing over "best hot dog." To me, the good ones all taste the same and the bad ones are just bad. How about great sausage? One good spot is Lederhosen on Grove St. in the West Village. All sorts of wurst and beer served by the liter make this little spot a fairly authentic German dig.

Enjoy your time here. You will be dazzled even if you happen to miss all of our suggestions.

Sea Grill These Days

I agree that The Sea Grill was excellent the last time that I ate there. Any of the fish served a la plancha was moist and gently seared on the outside. It is absolutely the way that fish is meant to be cooked. Although a bit pricey, normally $30-40/dish, the quality makes it worth it. I did not find the service snobby but rather attentive and helpful. Our waiter provided us with a wonderful wine recommendation that was pleasingly affordable. The only annoying part is wading through tourists to find the front door. Once inside, the only sign of the mayhem surrounding you is the ice skating rink. I think that you will be pleased.
