Nob Hill Foods open in Alameda Exactly which Safeway in Marin carries Friendship cottage cheese? For that matter, are there any stores in San Francisco that carry it? Thanks |

Carlo Petrini disinvited from Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market Profound apologies if this has been mentioned already, but Petrini apparently wrote a letter explaining the controversial passage in question: |

Agreed with all the previous posts, but would like to add it's also surprisingly pricey. |

Dinner on 5th Avenue in Park Slope - Nana, Moutarde, where? I agree with everyone who says to avoid Moutarde. Along with the aforementioned complaints, I'd like to add on that the service was terrible. Waitress spilled wine and water on me and was laughingly disconnected and aloof. Also, I made a math error (thanks, English major) on the tip/total and realized after I had sent it away (gave her 30% tip instead of the usual 20 but the total reflected a 20 percent tip ... or something like that). Instead of bringing it back, she said she'd take care of it. Of course, she kept the tip the same, but increased the total. I had flies too, by the way. |

Applewood has a small bar. If there's room, I'm sure they'd let you linger for a drink or two. |

Park Slope French bistros leave much to be desired. I've never had a good experience at Belleville, Moutarde or Cocotte. PS has many great restaurants, but just not French. I'll add Ici and Chez Oskar to the "recommended" list. |

Are any of these places good for dinner? |

Yeah, 7th Ave is your best shot. Steinhoff is great cold weather food. Little D is inconsistent; feel lucky? |

You're right. This article from April 2006 says he was 69 then. |

It seems like it's possible it was open, then closed early. |

What? You mean a 70-80 year-old man closed early on Christmas Day to go home and take a well deserved break from his 12+ hour days of constantly being on his feet? Jeez, you're right, the nerve of some people ... |

Your Top 5 "must visit" chow-related stores in Manhattan Can you tell me more about this? This might be a dumb question, but how long would/could the meat last, etc? |

Casual french in the theatre district. We had a very good meal at Tout Va Bien. Very old school and traditional, if that's what you're into. |

What's the scoop on Bar Minnow? I'll always treasure the time I went to Bar Minnow for a quick bite days before it closed: Me: "I'll have the mussels please." |

Bye Bye Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop No need for hostility. "Restaurant expansion" can also imply that another branch has been opened, which is a common reason for the diminishing quality of food at an establishment. In this case, I don't believe food quality is/was affected one way or the other by the mere opening of the back room to the public. If you are referring to the change in ownership (which took place about a year ago now .... see the NY Times article), I have to say that the new owner has definitely made E's more customer friendly. Custom orders were not an option two years. I couldn't even order a half sandwich. Yeah, you'll have some bad meals there. I've had many a boring tuna sandwich there and I'm not big on the turkey. I've never had the burgers, but I would be hesitant to try them anyway, especially with Shake Shack across the way (well not in the winter). Stick to the diner staples (simple sandwiches, etc) and you should be OK. It's clearly not for everyone. As you pointed out, the greasy spoon atmosphere leaves something to be desired for some. For me, it's a slice of old NY sprinkled in between (literally) the Jambas Juices and T-Mobile stores. And judging by some of these other responses and the fact that's it been open since '29, I'm not alone in my opinion. |

Bye Bye Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop They didn't expand. They added burgers to the menu to provide an alternative to the Shake Shake waits. |

Tonight Union Square under $150/2 Farallon sounds like a good fit. |

Long-Distance Girlfriend in town You could also try heading to Brooklyn. Al di La, Applewood, Stone Park Cafe and others can be done pretty easily under 100 with a cheapish bottle of wine. |

Thanks AKR. Just how "not high end" is Tout Va Bien? Are we talking dive? Any other reports? |

Hi All, Going to see a Broadway show this week and as usual, I'm at a loss for a pre-theater meal. Based on the NY Mag food blog (http://nymag.com/daily/food/), I made reservations at Tout Va Bien. Has anyone been lately? What's it like? Here on Chowhound, it seems to have gotten mixed reviews, though none recently. I've also considered Marseille & DB. Any help is appreciated... Thanks. |

In my opinion, there is no way Arturo's is a dive. Classic NY, probably. But a dive, definitely not. |

With many excellent and memorable Little Dishes meals under my belt, I have defended Little Dishes quite often here and elsewhere, but I have to say, (and as much as I hate agreeing with Mr. Martinez... kidding) I was quite disappointed in my last meal there. Since its opening, I've been about 10 times, and when I went this Saturday, the menu itself just wasn't as appealing as it used to be. Yes, I love the wedge and the pork butt (though pork butt lovers NEED to go to Lupa), but the small plates section of the menu is now almost entirely vegetable and side dishes! I realize some items are out of season, but to have five grilled spears of asparagus for $8-9 and a similarly priced "pickle dish" seems a little ridiculous. I could go on (radish plate, cheese plate, et al) ... it just seems like most of the "little dishes"--once mezes--are now merely side dishes. Of course, everytime I've been, we've always ordered several small plates instead of big plates, because I've found the entrees quite boring -- chicken, steak, lamb, or fish ... not exactly uber-creative. But I digress. For a long time, I thought the meal justified the price. In fact, $8 for a perfectly grilled octopus salad was a bargain. The oysters were always fresh, etc. But the current fall menu is, IMO, just boring, overpriced, and disappointing. It pains me to say this, because I agree that LD is (could be, should be) a great neighborhood place. Here's hoping for some tweaks ... PS I also agree that people, save a truly horrific experience, should *generally* not write off any restaurant without a return trip. And for those considering a trip to LD, I definitely recommend checking it out. |
