Moving To Santa Monica and searched a lot! Check my list?!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The bread at Bay Cities is pretty lousy and reminds me of the bread I used to get at my local Met Food in Brooklyn. Its a machine made product that may have been good in 1975 when the only other choice was wonder bread. If you want to buy a good Italian bread with flavor head straight to Wally's who has the goods from Bread Lab.

Antica Pizzeria in the Marina is LA's best and most authentic Neapolitan pizza experience

mozza is MUCH better than otto.

I have to lose some pounds what's a foodie to do?

i agree with you molly and i was super excited when they opened as i live nearby. the food, however is pretty uninspired and prices that match huckleberry. too bad!!!

hey they use organic eggs and butter and the doughnuts are fried in unsaturated oil so its gotta be healthy, right?

they opened a hucleberry clone in my neck of the woods in santa monica called Thyme Café & Market which sadly is not nearly as good but at least I wont be tempted...

Clueless NY Hound Transplant Needs LA Help!

If the The Nickel Diner opened in New York, no one would notice. The fact that it has gotten so much press when they serve such mediocore fare says alot about the culinary state of affairs in downtown los angeles.

I love Jitlada but think the mussels are very over rated. Those large New Zealand mussels are tasteless and have an unpleasant texture.

Bagels in LA?

Clueless NY Hound Transplant Needs LA Help!

i have not tried Amandine but will try it soon and i am hopeful it is good. So far I have not been impressed with La Brea, Bay Cities, Le Pain Du Jour, Bread Bar. The only bread I have really liked is Huckleberry, which is more of an artisanal product.

As someone who grew up in Brooklyn eating bread from great old Italian bakeries, I have to tell you Bay Cities bread is like wonder bread, souless supermarket mass produced and low quality.

Pizzeria Mozza: as good as they say?

You obviously do not care much about pizza then.

Clueless NY Hound Transplant Needs LA Help!

hi emilia. i feel your pain. i am a transplanted brooklynite out here. what i've found is you cannot search for the stuff you loved in new york, which includes good bread, homeade pasta (besides mozza), gelato, pizza (besides mozza), bagels and italian food for the most part. i am surpised that you mention bottega louie as a place you like.

los angeles does have, however incredible farmers markets, regional chinese food, thai, vietnamese and mexican. none of it is 2 miles from your house. i just had an incredible dinner at babita in san gabriel. its a trek but is worth is just for the incredible tortillas. blows all mexican food on the east coast away. incredible...

Bottega Louie - an Italian heaven? [Review + Pics]

I'm shocked at how low the standards are in Los Angeles and this includes the press. I shared a pizza here with my colleague when this joint opened and it was bad to mediocore. The crust had no flavor or body and the cheese was bland and the sausage was flavorless. I also tasted some of the pastas and i have to say everything was tated like it was made at a catering hall in New Jersey. This place would be torn to pieces by New York diners and the press.

Riva - Santa Monica

I was not a fan of Riva's pizza. They put dried herbs like oregano in the sauce which is a rookie mistake. It over powers everything else and makes it taste like a frozen pizza from Ralph's.

Pizzeria Mozza: as good as they say?

Lombardi's and Patsy's are both extremely mediocore. Mozza is in another league entirely.

Pizzeria Mozza: as good as they say?

Take it from a New Yorker who knows about pizza. Mozza is the real deal. I would go to Mozza in any town, including New York. I especially like the spinach pie, the burrata and squash blossoms pie and the pepperoni pie. Ernie, Grimaldi's is a overhyped joint which hasnt been good since the late nineties, when Patsy sold the place. Its a tourist trap.

Is there a better sandwich place than Bay Cities???

it may be fresh and warm but it is lousy machine made bread. instead of attacking me, i reccomend you spend a little time trying artisanal bread, stuff you can't find in los angeles. next time you are in new york, head straight to the sullivan street bakery. then tell me what i have to say is "hyperbole."

Is there a better sandwich place than Bay Cities???

my local met food in brooklyn made bread better then bay cities. it's machine made wonder bread in an italian loaf. in six months, i have not found ANY decent bread in los angeles.

Is there a better sandwich place than Bay Cities???

while they do have some interesting italian products like dop san marzano tomatoes and good dried pasta, the prepared selections are no better then an average long island deli and the "fresh" bread tastes liked it was made by the a & p.

best restaurant in brooklyn at any price

I just had a really mediocore and strange meal at Applewood. The lobster appetizer, which I've had in different forms in the past was tiny, the meat was dry, no flavor, hum hum. I ordered the roasted Columbia River Sturgeon braised collard greens, which ws served raw in the middle. I pointed this out to the female owner/host, who apoligized but emphasized that that's how they prepare all fish bec its so fresh and such good quality. I asked her if they serve striped bass rare in the middle and she said, yes. Now I like like tuna or even salmon rare but cooking 101 dictates that white fish needs to be cooked through but still juicy. My dish was returned to me, tiny and half the portion of my original but properly cooked.

what gives?

The food at Da Tomasso is very average but the wine list is one of the best and most affordable in NY.
