Free Speech Cafe...

Has anyone been? It's on 29 or 30 (i 4get) street right when you turn off of ditmars. I saw a couple of people with laptops and then it seemed like they were all talking to eachother like a group discussion and I didnt want to interupt and ask what was going on but it seemed really cute to go relax and do work. Anyone know?

Carpaccio

My sister in law just had a baby and so she is craving all the food she used to eat, that she wasn't allowed to eat when she was pregnant. She lived in the city most of her life and hatest eh food in astoria in comparison- I love the food in Astoria, and I am sure she means no disrespect to Astoria food lovers. While playing with the baby, we were discussing food and she was saying how she really misses carpaccio and wants to find somewhere in Astoria that serves it. I didnt know what it is, and so dont know where it is served. I say Astoria, because it is still hard to get her too far from the baby, and the grandma's can only watch him for not too long. Any rec's.

Also if you have any rec's for city like food in Astoria I can bring her. She loves sushi and said so far everything shes tried in Astoria has disappointed (I am not sure where she went).

Thanx

Cupcakes in Queens?

i thought they made them... hmmmm... regardless, they look amazing but really lack flavor and are stale most of the time... disappointing. i wish marthas was still there for their cupcakes!!!

Cupcakes in Queens?

i hear the bad things about the Marthas in Forest hills, but the one in Astoria is amazing. I guess they put most of their effort into the one here, rather than the other one. I have never been disappointed by the martha's in Astoria. Everytime i go to Ditmars i pay them a visit for the cupcakes!!! so yummy and tastey!!!

Il Bambino has cupcakes and they look amazing, but when you taste them, they taste fine, but nothing special, efinately not what you expect by looking at them.

Mundo never disappoints

Went to Mundo last night, and it reaffirmed that they are awesome! I love that the art on the wall always changes and the environment is pretty laid back. We got hummus, stuffed zuccini, a salad and one of their specials, shrimp w/ couscous. I personally, do not like hummus, mostly because of the texture, but it was really good!!!
Everything was amazing, especially the shrimp!!!! The only thing, like the space, the portion of the stuffed zuccini was small, but I guess it fits in. They bring out everything very slow, and so by thte time you actually finish with the one, the next is ready. He told us in the beginning that chocolate soufle was in the oven and oh my was it amazing!!! We had two glasses of sangra, and the bill came out to $68 which seems like a lot, especially since the dessert was $10. Although it is a little pricey, in the end, I was sooo stuffed and it was soooo yummy!!! The best part is that one of us wasnt eating dairy or meat, and they had so many options that we could have still gotten.

Coffee bar "culture" in Queens?

I dont think it counts as a coffee bar, but Panera on 35th ave and steinway in astoria has a lot of tables and they have wifi... i dont think you would have a problem sitting there for a while...

Valverde on Steinway/36th Ave--great

i went on Sunday afternoon, for brunch. i read some things about it being amazing and others about it being just okay.

my boyfriend got the fench toast and i got a salad. I wont say anything about the salad, it was good but its also hard to mess up a salad. his french toast though was really good. service on the other hand... ehh. We were the only table in there. When we walked in, we were asked if we wanted coffee, i said no just water and my boyfriend got a coffee. 10 minutes later, still no water, and we were still the only table in there. another table walked in and after asking once more for water, we got it. i dont want to say it was bad, but for having noone in there, could have been better.

we enjoyed the food, the decor though, not so much. I would like to try it at night but it doesnt seem like there is anyway that can be romantic. I feel like you can see way too much of the kitchen and the metal thats on the walls (in the kitchen) just kills it for me.

I will try it for the food, but as a romantic dinner, not so much.

Nita's European Bakery --Sunnyside-Queens

i know its a little far from sunnyside, but Martha's on Ditmars and 38th street makes amazing cakes!!! I never order from anyone but them. And they make the real authentic red velvet, that isn't just spongecake with food coloring. They have a huge selection if you walk in, but im sure its always best to call ahead of time. 718-545-9737

.... but its not Romanian. I wasnt sure if you wanted just a Romanian bakery, but they are really good!

Where can I buy a live octopus?

Although I would recommend against getting a live octopus, although odd, you may want to get a number and contact the Hunt's Point fish market in the Bx and ask them if they know. They supply sooo many places with their seafood, if anyone has they should, and if they dont they may know where you can get.

Romantic, dark, semiformal, French restaurant

Fleur de Sel - although the food was great, and I ate things I never thought I would, it wasn't as romantic as I expected epecially because it was not dark enough. If it was a little darker it would have been perfect.

Leng's Thai - Astoria - Broadway

i went about 2 weeks after they opened. i dont remmeebr any names but everyhting was good except for the mixed seafood w/ glass noodles thing. and by not good i mean it was decent tasting but the seafood was unrecognizable to me- so all i ate was the shrimp. i wanan go back. the rest of the food was really good and the decor is really nice

Galatoboureko?

haha yeah i think all greeks do that!!!

Feb 20, 2008

Galatoboureko?

so it can be three things- galactoboureko, ek mek or bougatsa.

galactoboureko is the same filo that is used in baklava, just filled with custard. The real home made custards are thick, yellow-ish depending on how much custard they actually use, and there are hints of orange. Not all bakerys use orange flavor, when my mom makes it she uses flakes of the orange peel so it really gives it just a slight taste, sometimes you dont eevn realize it. I can be made without this flavor, especially at bakerys who make huge amounts of them.

ek mek has a white cream on top, then custard and kataifi filo. I dont think this is what you ate.

bougatsa is usually thinner and you get a bigger piece, with filo similar to the baklava, but instead of being drizzled with syrup, it is usually served with powedered sugar on top. It is still very sweet, but doesnt sit in syrup (what people refer to as honey but is usually homemade simple syrup with cloves and cinammon).

If what you had was drizzled in syrup, your best bet is galactoboureko.
I doubt its ek mek bc you didnt mention it had any white cream on top.

But all three desserts are AMAZING when made correctly.

Uncle Georges in Astoria

what i mean is that greek restuarants have more to offer than spinach pie and greek salad. go to any greek restaurant at any given time and there will probably be at least one table who orders that and only that. every greek place has typical dishes that can be found in Greek, italian, american, etc. restaurants to satisfy those who dont care to try something different. any given person can make lamb chops at home. this is how i meant it, maybe i phrased it wrong in my earlier post. Lamb is a greek dish, but lamb on a spit or whole roasted lamb, or lamb in the oven, not necessarily lamb chops.

Ethos or Aliada in Astoria

ethos was very overpriced last time i went, but it was before they changed the name to ethos. the portions were not very large, especially compared to the price.

i would say for cypriot, forget aliada and go to Zenon. its one of my fav grks places in astoria, always fresh, and this year they are celebrating their 20th yr anniversary.

Leng "Thai/Asian" in Astoria- have you tried it?

i went there maybe the week they opened. I love the decor, they have a yard which im assuming will be open in the summer. We were seated in the back, they had 2 tables of 7 full and they put us right in between them, but its ok bc one left shortly after but it was soooooooooooooo cold. I guess they hadnt pproperly weather sealed the doors so we asked to move to the front. They gave us no problem. We got something free "from the chef" which was yummy but sorry i do no remember names. Overall is was pretty good. We made a mistake and ordered a mixed seafood dish- i didnt know waht some of the stuff was, but it was ok. I will definately go back and try it again, and im going to ask to sit in front.

Uncle Georges in Astoria

heres what i dont understand... why go to a Greek place and order lamb chops?????

yeha everyplace has it on teh menu but you can go to any place in ny and get lamb chops. and like you said, some people cook it well and some dont... granted i dont remember anything rave worthy about from Agnanti, i know they had a lot of meze that you can definately fill up with.

and uncle georges- whoever thinks that place is good food, really does not know about good food. If you speak to most of the employees outside of work, they will tell you not to eat there. and i am not kidding. thats enough of a warning for me.

Coming to ny and going to uncle georges when you have a dozen other grk places to choose from, why???

Stamatis on ditmars, not broadway has good grk "ladera" dishes.
tellys has good appetizers
athens tavern has new-age greek (thats the only way to categorize most dishes)
kyklades has good seafood, but i felt their other dishes were very weak
agnanti- decent apps but very small
dimitris on broadway (which is either closed or closing for renovations) has a good selection of fish
aliada- i refuse to go, but finally tried their sheftalia bc a friend had some at their house, definately not rave worthy
Zenon is where i will stick for my Cypriot food, i especially love the meze!!!!
Ethos (?) which i think is closed for "renovations" i went when it was the other name, and it was good but very expensive
Philoxenia- hated it and gave it another shot and still not worth going back- makes me wonder about some chowhounders taste of food.- and they are pretty expensive!!!!! (4 meatballs, 11.50)

Uncle Georges and Opa is more fast food grk places- stick to opa

What i cant understand is when people go into a grk place and only order spinach pie!!!! you can get this at even non greek places. people make the mistake of not wanting to try something new. You cant judge a restaurant on 1 or 2 american dishes if it is a Greek place- try ordering something Greek. Granted sometimes you are just in th emood for some sp. pie or a lamb chop or 2, but you cant write a review and judge the restaurants other dishes based on something like that!
